Girl begins cancer treatment despite herfather's religion
By TOM EBLEN
AtMM-iatnl PrfM Writer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn < AP) — A preacher's daughter began
court-ordered chemotherapy Thursday, but her doctor said
delays in treatment have increased the risk that her football
sized cancer tumor will kill her
A small dose of Cytoxan, a cancer-killing drug, was in
jected through a needle in Pamela Hamilton's arm while she
slept early Thursday morning
“She's doing really fine," said Pat Kelly, a spokeswoman
for East Tennessee Children's Hospital. “It didn't bother her
She didn't say anything at all."
Pamela s temperature was normal for the first time since
she entered the hospital Saturday, Ms Kelly said Her
heartbeat remained abnormally fast, and she was listed in
serious condition.
Dr. Frank Haraf said a two-month delay in treatment had
reduced the girl's chance of survival from 75 percent to no
better than 25 percent.
Larry Hamilton, pastor of the Church of God of the Union
Assembly in LaFollette, says his sect forbids the use of
medicine Hamilton says only God can heal his daughter
The Tennessee Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a
juvenile court's order requiring treatment, and Tennessee
Supreme Court Justice Frank F. Drowota refused to stay the
order.
James A H Bell. Hamilton's lawyer, said he would file a
request to appeal the case to the state Supreme Court. He
said the court would likely hear the appeal request Wed-

Watt denounced as ‘bigot’
By MARTIN CRUT81NGER
Ukorialrd PrntMrllrr
WASHINGTON (AP) - As five Senate
Republicans called for James Watt's
resignation, the interior secretary apologiz
ed to President Reagan today for referring to
members of an advisory commission as a
black, a woman, “two Jews and a cripple
"I have made a mistake,” Watt wrote
Reagan in an unsought letter White House
spokesman Larry Speakes said Watt had not
offered to resign
On Capitol Hill. Watt was denounced on the
Senate floor in the strongest outburst yet
from members of his own party.
One Republican said Watt's comments
showed a "panorama, of bigotry and hate."
Another said Watt was an embarassment to
Reagan and a third called on Reagan to find
someone who could better serve the country
The calls for Watt’s resignation came
following Watt's speech Wednesday to a
business group in which he said a coal
leasing advisory commission he appointed
included a black, a woman, "two Jews and a
cripple,"
Sen Warren Rudman, R-N.H., called Watt
"an embarassment to the president who ap
pointed him, an embarassment to the party
to which 1 proudly belong and an embarass
inent to the country."
Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., told the
Senate he agreed with Rudman’s call for
Watt's resignation.
Sen. Lowell Weicker, R-Conn., charged
that Watt's comments are part of a
panorama not of error but of bigotry and
hate"
Watt is an embarassment
to the president who
appointed him, an em
barassment to the party
to which I proudly belong
and an embarassment to
the country
—Sen. Warren Rudman
Democrats joined in the litany.
Minority Leader Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va .
accused Watt of "an unbelievable insensitivi
ty to the feelings of people ,"
Sen William Proxmire, D-Wis , also called
for Watt's resignation
nesday.
If the state's highest court upholds treatment, Bell said he
might appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Pamela's tumor was discovered in July when doctors
mended her broken leg, which is allowed by the family’s
religious beliefs State social workers entered the case when
Hamilton refused to seek treatment for the cancer.
“If treatment had been started in July she would have
had a much better chance of being cured," Haraf said.
"The tumor now extends from the level of the knee, up
through the entire thigh, up into the hip joint itself," said
Haraf. who described it as "red, hot, angry ."
The tumor has destroyed much of the left leg bone, and
even if cured, the girl's leg will be permanently deformed, he
said.
Haraf said it will be 2-6 weeks before doctors know if
chemotherapy is doing any good If chemotherapy doesn’t
help, it will be stopped, he said.
' The first sign that we are succeeding will be a reduction in
pain," he said. "This child has pain."
The girl will continue receiving Cytoxan until Wednesday,
when she will instead receive another drug, Adriamyacin,
Ms. Kelly said.
After five days’ rest, she will start another eight-day round
of treatment She is receiving Prednisone, a drug to reduce
inflamation of her thigh, blood and Demerol, a painkiller
Haraf said radiation treatment would begin in a month or
so if the chemotherapy drugs shrink the tumor. Radiation
therapy involves bombarding the tumor with radioactive
beams that destroy cancer cells.
