University Union to present impressive new movie line-up
Dustin Huffman in 'Tootsie,' part of Union’s weekend fare
By JOE SCHWARTZ
Special to the Krd and Black
The University Union's
cinematic arts division has a
rather impressive iine-up of
films to show this fall. Too
bad the new theater in the
Tate Center won't be ready
until October 21. but never
fear, the films will be shown
on the old nightly schedule at
South P J until the new
facility is ready
Big box office draws are
the main weekend fare this
fall, but despite having done
well commercially, some of
them leave a little to be
desired artistically, i.e
Sylvester Stallone's “First
Blood" which plays tonight
On the other hand,
“Tootsie" is a great film that
bears repeated viewing
Other films are "The
Meaning of Life," which is
recommended only for
Monty Python fans. "An
Office and a Gentleman"
and ”4* Hours."
On the semi-cultural side
are the incredible "Ghandi"
and "Eating Raoul," a
rather unique and comic
look at murder Also
showing on a weekend is the
amazingly bad "Creep-
show." which couldn't
decide if it was a comedy or
a horror film and sub
sequently failed in both
areas
The weekend midnight
films are generally cheap
exploitations of either drugs,
sex or violence, the least
important of these films
being "Reefer Mad-
ness"/"Sex Madness"
I propaganda films from the
1930s i, "Revenge of the
Cheerleaders" and "Mr
Mike's Mondo Video ” A
little more worthwhile are
"Return of the Dragon" and
the musical documentary
"Woodstock "
Of the interesting mid
night selections there is the
Monkee's only film, "Head,"
with such notables as Jack
Nicholson. Teri Garr and
Frank Zappa Also look for
Nicholson in "Little Shop of
Horrors," which was
directed by Roger Corman
and is well worth seeing
Unfortunately, it's on a
double bill with "It’s Alive"
for the Halloween weekend
Of the older and possibly
lesser-known comedies this
fall are "After the Thin
Man," starring William
Powell, Myrna Loy and
James Stewart in the second
of the 1930s Thin Man series.
and “Libeled Lady," a
highly acclaimed comedy
with Loy. Powell, Spencer
Tracy and Jean Harlow-
Frank Capra's “Arsenic and
Old Lace" stars Cary Grant
as a drama critic who finds
that his aunts have a habit of
poisoning the elderberry
wine
"Bedazzled" is a fantastic
movie starring Dudley
Moore who sells his soul to
the devil (Peter Cook) for
seven wishes that never
quite work out the way he
wants.
"Play It Again Sam" stars
Woody Allen as a film buff
and a failure with women
who tries desperately to be
like Humphrey Bogart Allen
also appears in "Casino
Royale," a spoof of the
James Bond film series
starring David Niven. Peter
Sellers, Orson Weis and
Ursula Andress (who also
appeared in the first Bond
film, “Dr, No").
There's also a Marx
Brothers film, "Duck Soup,"
and a horror film satire,
"The Raven." starring Boris
Karloff, Peter Lorre. Vin
cent Price and Jack
Nicholson
Dramas this fall include
Otto Preminger's three and
a half hour "Exodus," Jack
Nicholson with Faye
Dunaway in "Chinatown"
and "King Lear." one of the
best screen adaptations of a
Shakespearean work
Malcolm McDowell has his
film debut in the Cannes
Film Festival winner “If....”
a surrealistic 1960s film A
good adaptation of Charles
Dickens' "A Christmas
Carol," "Kramer vs.
Kramer" and a bad musical
biography starring Diana
Ross as Billie Holiday in
"Lady Sings the Blues,"
which despite a com
mendable performance by
Ross ends up being no more
than a two-hour soap opera,
will also be shown
Among the films that don't
quite fit in to either
categories of comedy or
drama is “Live and Let
Die," Roger Moore's first
and only really impressive
Bond film Also "Singin' in
the Rain," starring Gene
Kelly and Donald O'Connor
which has been heralded as
the greatest movie musical
of all time
George Lucas' first film.
"TH X1138," is also
scheduled. The film is
visual, but rather dull and
has only grown in cult
prominence since its
creator's later successes
"To Die in Madrid" is a
masterful documentary
about the Spanish Civil War.
"Alice's Restaurant" is a
comedy/drama dealing with
just about every aspect of
the 1960s way of life starring
Arlo Guthrie. The double
feature that week consists of
"Between the Lines," which
deals with the ramifications
of a rather liberal un
derground newspaper's staff
when it is bought out by a
newspaper tycoon and
"Easy Rider,” a classic tale
of searching for America
Sunday is foreign film
night, and each film
scheduled is a fine example
of the movies produced in its
country. Fortunately, all
have the original dialogue
and English subtitles The
first in the series is "The
Seven Samurai," best
foreign film of 1954, and is
probably the most ac
claimed to have ever come
out of Japan. Three French
films: Marcel Carne's
"Children of Paradise,”
Jean-Luc Godard's
"Weekend" and Louis
Malle's "Lacombe, Lucien,"
and from Castro's Cuba,
"Memories of Un-
derdevelopement” will also
be shown
"Knife in the Head,"
Reinhard flauff's political
mystery thriller, and
Werner Fassbinder's
"Germany in Autumn,” a
film on political and social
turmoil, are Germany’s
contribution to the line-up
The Hungarian film
"Confidence" deals with two
fugitives who are thrown
together and are hiding out
in Nazi occupied Budapest
The last film in the series
is the Italian film “L’Av-
ventura,” which examines a
group of people as they
analyze their relationships
after a girl mysteriously
disappears from the yacht
they are all aboard.
So that's it, calendars with
exact dates and showtimes
will be posted around
campus and should be
available at the new theater,
the libraries and the Tate
Center information booth. It
looks like a pretty good
schedule, so be sure and pick
one up
Midler: 6 The Divine Miss M. 9 moves into mainstream
A review of “No Frills. '' by Bette Midler Produced by Chuck
Plotkin An Atlantic Recording Co release
By GEORGE DEM AS
Rrd and Mark Kelrrtainmrnt Kdilor
Alright y'all. believe this if you can — Bette Midler has
gone pop Well, almost
She's not really gone pop in the sense of expanding her
unique style to sing mainstream songs It's more like she's
learned to sing like mainstream singers and imitate them
singing songs they should have sung in the first place
That's confusing
Here's an example "Is It Love,” the opening track, is a
decent song, and Midler sings it well The trouble is that it
was meant for Pat Benatar. and that's the way Midler sings
it.
Now, I don't know if "Is It Love" writers Nick Gilder
i remember him' 1 ) and Jimmy McCullough ever offered the
song to Benatar or not. but it is a song only Benatar could
really do well
So what can Midler do’ She has to sing it like Benatar
would for it to be any good
Four other songs on the album give the same impression
that they were written for somebody else On side one, are
“All I Need To Know," which sounds like early Dolly Part on,
and “Heart Over Head," a song perfectly suited to Jennifer
Wames
On side two are "Let Me Drive," definitely Donna Sum
mers fare, and "My Eye On You,” a Stevie Nicks tune if I
ever heard one
The songs are too pop-oriented to
be of any use to Midler, who needs
musical difficulty and real
storytelling lyrics to enjoy singing
The songs are all right, but they are too pop oriented to be
of any use to Midler, who needs musical difficulty and real
story telling lyrics to lie able to enjoy singing and therefore
let us enjoy listening to her not what she thinks she should
be
Two songs written for other artists, though, are close
enough to Midler's own style to allow her to inject some of
herself into them
"My Favorite Waste of Time,” written by Marshall
Crenshaw, sounds like he wrote it for himself, but Midler
uses her ability with intricate harmonies to give it a personal
touch
"Beast of Burden," by, who else, Mick Jagger and Keith
Richards, will always be a Stones song, but I've always said
Midler could match the Stones for raunchy fun any day, so it
comes across well
That leaves three songs that are really Bette Midler
material and assure her staunch fans that the real Bette
hasn't drowned in the mainstream I Neat image, huh?)
“Only in Miami," has a big hand sound that does justice to
Midler's voice and a catchy, interesting I^atin rhythm she
can play with to her heart's content.
"Soda and a Souvenir," is a 195()s-type song about the
follies and pain of love that you know Midler relates to
enough to really give it impact This cut also features The
Staggering Harlettes, Midler's road back-up trio that adds so
much to her albums.
The last cut. "Come Back Jimmy Dean," is the perfect,
lonely kind of ballad Midler can make truly poignant
Now, I don’t know why the other songs are on this album
(yes I do. they're there to make it popular) but it is those last
three I mentioned that are truly the kind of tunes Midler
fans know and love her lor
Even the cover, with it's party colors and abstract art,
looks like it belongs on somebody else'a album ---the K-S2 s
