Gabriel: not satisfied with mere narration
A review of "Peter Gabriel
Plays Live.” by Peter

Since gaining freedom
from Genesis in 1975. Peter
Gabriel's music has grown
more and more powerful By
power. I don't mean the
ability to inflict pain on one's
ear mechanisms or to blow
one's Jensen triaxial car
speakers, but the ability to
actually grip the listener,
change his mood, chill his
spine
When Gabriel unleashed
his "Security" album onto
his helpless audience last
September, listeners were
drawn into the intense
rhythms of his songs, which
seemed to encompass the en
tire range of human phobias
Even an American wedding
was made to sound as haun
ting as a jungle sacrifice in
his "Family and the Fishing
Net " Gabriel isn't satisfied
with mere narration — he
creates a sound that paints
the scene and situation so ac
curately that his songs are
experienced rather than
heard.
So. then, somebody decid
ed it was time to do a live
album
1 was interested in
whether or not "Peter
Gabriel Plays Live" could at
least partially capture the
intensity of his music, but
the album's opener,
“Rhythm of the Heat," left
me slightly disappointed
The entrancing percussion
barrage at the end of the
song, handled brilliantly by
the Ekome Dance Company
on “Security,” was reduced
to a comparatively bland
drum solo by Jerry Marotta,
who cannot be faulted for the
absence of the powerful
African rhythms one
associates with Gabriel This
seems to hold true with the
bulk of the songs on the
album.
This is not to say that
"Plays Live" is a waste of
time It does contain a few
gems and is lavishly packag

So why. in 196:1 when two-career families are more com
mon than ever, would anyone try to make a modern comedy
using this old pretext?
Because in a lot of wavs it’s still funny if it's done right
And that's why this movie works it’s done right The casting
is right The characters are right The setting is right And
most important, the chemistry is right
Sorry about that last one "Chemistry" is a pretty
hackneyed word, but it’s still the only one that fits There's a
confidence and good feeling for a movie in an audience when
it can see that the actors are comfortable with each other,
with their lines and with their characters That feeling will
leave an audience smiling and wishing for more no matter
how trite the pretext of the show
Teri Garr and Michael Keaton, the happy couple, are
absolutely charming together and separately They're so
likable, it's impossible not to want to see them work out their

Gabriel, who usually chooses
invisibility and mystery over
the risks of concrete ex
posure It also premiers "I
Go Swimming," an unreleas
ed Gabriel track celebrating
an obsession with water and
submersion This song is
special in that a studio ver
sion does not exist — there is
nothing to compare it to, so it
has nothing to live up to. Our
expectations are what
plagues the rest of the songs
the most
Two songs that retain their
original impact on this
album are "No Self Control"
and "I Don’t Remember " In
the former, the tempo is
slowed and, apart from an
occasional outburst or two,
Ihe instruments are quieter
than in the studio version
All this creates an eerier
sound that is very effective
in interpreting a dangerous
ly excessive nature.
However, the bulk of Ihe
songs seem hollow and weak
in comparison to their studio
counterparts. Yet it must be
stressed that without the ex
cellent original versions, the
live ones would not be a
disappointment. Gabriel is
certainly not the first to lose
effectiveness when captured
on a live album.
Although these may be
dismissed as the bitter ran-
tings of a fan who didn't get
to see any of Gabriel's live
shows, there remains the
question of what place live
albums have in our society.
Each of us has his own
answer, and not all of them
involve a turntable.
Although it is somewhat ef
fective in giving us a taste of
what Gabriel is like in the
flesh, “Peter Gabriel Plays
Live" falls into the category
of “just another live album.”

And finally, Martin Mull, Garr s new boss, is perfect as the

Ultimately, though, likability notwithstanding, it's the plot
