Boy, did freshman tailback David Mc
Cluskey foul up royally in Saturday's game
with South Carolina With the Gamecocks
leading 3-0 in the first quarter, Georgia faced
a third-and-two at the Carolina 41 As they
have done all season, the Bulldogs brought
McCluskey into the game for a short yardage
play,
McCluskey was called upon to pick up
those two tough yards on an off-tackle slam
and enable Georgia to maintain possession of
the football
Instead, he cleared the line of scrimmage
and dashed 41 yards for a touchdown
So much for possession football
"Whenever you're in a short-yardage
situation," Georgia coach Vince Dooley
said, “the defense is going to come up and
crowd the line of scrimmage If you make the
crack, which he did, you've got what he got-
and that's a touchdown, because you're in
the secondary in four or five yards '’
Georgia fans have seen a lot of McCluskey
this year when the Bulldog offense has faced
third-and two, fourth-and one situations
These yards are tough to pick up for
precisely the same reason McCluskey
scored-because the defense stacks the line of
scrimmage Georgia coaches feel Mc
Cluskey is the (test horse in the Bulldog
stable of running backs at picking up the
tough yard, and that is why his number has
been called so much in that situation At
Clemson, the freshman had only 24 yards in
10 carries, but three of those carries were for
first downs on third or fourth-down plays
This niche in the Bulldog offense is one
McCluskey said he's found satisfying so far
"I feel real comfortable McCluskey
said "If that's what they want me to do,
that'swhat I'll be ”
Against South Carolina, though, short-
yardage man became long-yardage man, as
McCluskey led Bulldog running backs with 91
yards on 12 rushes with his touchdown
Seventeen of those yards McCluskey would
rather have back They came on a pitchout at
the Carolina 17 where the tailback never
quite got a handle on the ball McCluskey
batted the ball into the end zone where it was
recovered by a Gamecock defensive back
The fumble was one of three for the day by
McCluskey, the first of which led to South
Carolina's only touchdown of the afternoon

If you sport a potent air
attack, it follows that you
should have fancy names for
the pass plays.
For Georgia, the play is
called the 607 Not quite as
snazzy as the 747 or the F-15,
but throughout the years, the
play has scored many
confirmed touchdown kills
Here’s what is supposed to
happen when the play is
called
"The 607 is a hashmark
flag for the tight end," said
Georgia offensive coor
dinator George Haffner
"The quarterback comes out
on a sprint, looking (for the
fullback i in the flat. The
tight end goes on a flag route
behind the fullback The
quarterback then reads the
option of receivers, and
takes what option i hitting
either receiver or running
the ball himself) he tninks
will give him the most "
Confused’ Consider the

snap:
slightest idea what's gzing
on At least South Carolina ’s
defense didn’t on Georgia's
first offensive possession of
the second half, when
Haffner called the 607 on a
third-and-goal from the
Gamecock 2-yard-line
The play clicked, as
Georgia co-quarterback
John Lastinger hit a wide-
open Clarence Kay in the end
zone to give Georgia a 16-10
lead, one it never
relinquished
But like every great effort,
there was a little ad lib to
this particular 607, on both
ends of the reception.
Lastinger delayed on his
roll out, enticing Carolina
defenders to think about him
running the ball They ad
vanced on Lastinger. leaving
the big tight end Kay alone
across the goal line As he
was being tackled. Lastinger
launched a throw toward
Kay, who squeezed the ball
home for his second
touchdown catch of the year
