•Blocked Field Goal
Krom PageH
KAY
By TODD HOLCOMB
K«1 and Mack Sport* Editor
He blocked another field goal Some
passed off Terry Hoage's two blocked kicks
against Uemson as happenstance, just like
those dozen interceptions last year Bui then
he blocked another one
Against South Carolina Saturday, kicker
Mark Fleetwood, 15 for 15 inside the 50-yard
line last year, attempted a 34-yarder that
would have cut Georgia's lead to 10-6 in the
second quarter. But then Hoage blocked
another one
Blocking field goals is no new trick for this
old Dog, according to Georgia coach Vince
Dooley As a 1980 squad-team freshman with
little notoriety out of his high school at
Huntsville. Texas, Hoage made his mark
blocking field goals in practice
"He's been doing that since he came
here," Dooley said "He won a job here at
Georgia before the 1980 Sugar Bowl He
blocked three field goals in a row in practice
"We said, we want you oil our side We re
tired of you blocking our field goals You're
going to block somebody else's.' So we
promoted him You're now on the field-goal
team You're going to New Orleans "’
Then in New Orleans, with Notre Dame
leading 3-0, and Georgia showing compelling
signs of offensive futility. Hoage climbed the
back of a teammate and blocked a 42-yard
field goal
The block set up a 46-yard Rex Robinson
field goal that tied the game Notre Dame
misjudged the ensuing kickoff, as the ball
bounced behind two would-be kick returners,
Georgia recovered on the Notre Dame one-
yard line and later scored the first touch
down of the game
Hoage started his sophomore season, but
was injured for most of the year From pre
season obscurity in 1982, he intercepted 12
passes and was a consensus All-America
rover
Whereas last year it was Hoage the in
terceptor, this year it's Hoage the field goal
blocker Hoage blocked two Bob Paulling

field goals versus Clemson in the 16-16 tie
Against South Carolina the next week, he
blocked his third field goal of the year
"The first time South Carolina kicked a
field goal, he spotted a crack in the middle
and took it, but he missed it," Dooley said,
"but he's thinking all the time He came back
in that same hole He got a nibble on that first
one and came right back in and blocked it "
Hoage said Georgia had three field goal
defenses — one in which he picks his hole
from the secondary and rushes in, another in
which he climbs the back of a lineman and
one in which he lines up at the end position
and tries to run the corner and dives at the
kicker’s feet. Against Clemson, Hoage took
the wide route.
“You just run in there as hard as you can
go and hope something happens," Hoage
said after the Clemson game. "I
was just lucky to get those two. I felt the wind
on about three others "
It was no coincidence that Hoage was the
man to block the field goals for Georgia,
according to Dooley. Hoage is the key player
in field-goal defense situations.
"We get our field-goal plan each week
from Hoage Whatever he tells us he wants to
do. that's what we do," Dooley said, perhaps
with a smidgen of exageration. But Hoage
does, he said, position himself where he
wants before kicks
“It's his perogative to line up anywhere he
wants to," Dooley said. "He's his own field-
goal blocker You think I'm going to try and
coach that?”

his best football against

this year, fans no doubt
remember the Seneca, S.C.,
native rambling for 53 yards
on a pass play against
Clemson last year to set up
Georgia s winning field goal
According to Kay, though,
his biggest catches came in
New Orleans, where he
caught a touchdown pass in
both of Georgia's past two
Sugar Bowl appearances
Going for a grand slam of
four-straight Sugar Bowls is
a goal in the back of the
senior's mind, he said, but
right now he's looking
toward more immediate
objectives
"Right now. I’m just
looking for a winning season
at Georgia," Kay said "If
we have a winning season,
everything else will take
care of itself
"We have to take them
week to week, concentrate
on Mississippi State, and do
a number on them "
