Georgia has bone to pick with Maroons

Mississippi State is going to be a problem
According to Georgia head coach Vince Dooley, the
Maroons from Starkville. Miss . have an offense that's going
to give the Georgia secondary headaches all day State's
wishbone offense left Georgia in a state of shock after the
first half of the team's meeting last year
Georgia led 2219 despite a 65-yard run by Ricky Edwards
and a 54-yard scamper by Michael Haddix on an option
pitchout from quarterback John Bond
Another source of worry for Dooley is Georgia s inex
perience in the secondary An injury to Charlie Dean has
caused Dooley to move rover Terry Hoage to Dean's vacated
spot Sophomore John Little will be filling Hoage's position at
rover
Cornerhack Tony Elack is the only player with any ex
perience against the wishbone offense at his position,
because Hoage has seen it only from rover
Dooley expressed concern over Hoage's confidence at the
new position He said the safety is the key man in defending
the wishbone I^ast year, safety Jeff Sanchez had 27 hits
against Mississippi State
The injury to Dean is not the only loss to the Bulldogs Last
week’s starting quarterback Todd Williams is still nursing a
bruised thigh and is listed as doubtful for Saturday's game
"Todd doesn't look good for Saturday," Dooley said "He
still has some swelling and soreness in his thigh "
Williams took himself out of the South Carolina game
Saturday in the third quarter because of a thigh injury he
suffered on the first offensive senes of the game
Although Mississippi State lost last week to Florida 35-12,
the score wasn't indicative of the way Mississippi State
played, according to Dooley Going into the fourth quarter,
Florida led 14-12
Mississippi State had a bad quarter against Florida just
like we had a bad quarter against Clemson," Dooley said
Fortunately, we had another quarter to catch up Their bad
quarter will be an incentive to them
The starting quarterback for the Maroons will be John
Bond, a Valdosta, Ga., native. Bond was generally regarded
as the number-two prospect in the state behind Herschel
Walker four years ago while at Valdosta High School There,
he was a teammate of Georgia quarterback John Lastinger
"John Bond is the single most talented athlete that I've
ever seen in a long time, Dooley said “He'll be coming
home, so he will be at his best
Bond is a four-year starter, and as a freshman led
Mississippi State loan upset win over Alabama This year he
has 132 yards rushing and 352 passing in three games
Mississippi State's wishbone, unlike Auburn's, is centered
around the quarterback, not running backs Bond has
finished among the top 10 rushers in the conference twice
For the third consecutive week Georgia will face a team
that has a statistically outstanding punter Mississippi
State's Tim Cutts averages 47 8 yards a punt coming into the
game
"We lose a first down on every punt exchange," Dooley
said, contrasting the Maroon punting game to his team's 36 2
yards-per punt average
