Just when Bulldog op
ponents thought it was safe
to go back on the field, it's
“Meat Cleaver II ”
At 6-2, 275 pounds. Mike
Weaver is an awesome
spectacle Brother of the
original butcher, former
Georgia noseguard Eddie
"Meat Cleaver" Weaver,
who at 6-0, 275-pounds was
also quite an imposing sight,
Mike realizes the inevitable
comparisons Never mind
that most reporters ask Mike
more about his brother, now
playing for the Los Angeles
Express of the United States
Football League, than they
do about himself He said he
has no beef about it.
“I don't feel any pressure
to play as weil as my
brother," Weaver said
“We re very close, and we
both did a lot of the same
things "
Both won high school state
championships in
weightlifting and in the shot
put Now that big brother is
gone, the younger Weaver
has settled down to making
his own name at Georgia
Better known as "Jumbo,"
an appropriate label given
him by former defensive
coordinator Erk Russell.
Weaver is a junior majoring
in Industrial Arts He is a
native of Haines City. Fla
Weaver said one of the
main reasons he forsook
Florida to come to Georgia
was the way Florida schools
treated his brother
"He was the best athlete
out of high school during that
time,” Mike said of his
brother "But they all said
he was too short and passed
him up
Mike came to Georgia in
1980 but the team opted to
red-shirt him because of his
nagging ankle injury By
19*1, Weaver asserted
himself as one of Georgia's
better up-and-coming of
fensive linemen Although he
started only two games in
1981, he played a lot of
minutes as a reserve at left
and right guard
By 1982, Weaver had won a
first-team role at right guard
and started every game
However, a change was in
On defense you can...let go and
play crazy...’
— Mike Weaver
the cards for "Jumbo" in
1983 Graduation depleted
the defense and left head
coach Vince Dooley with the
job of rebuilding the
defensive line Old timers
Dale Carver. Jimmy Payne
and Tim Crowe were gone
An immediate need for
experience, size and
strength on the defensive
front necessitated Weaver's
move from the offensive line
to the other side of the ball
How does Weaver feel
about the move'* Mentally,
he said playing offense was
much tougher
"On offense you had to
have your mind set on every
play," Weaver said “On
defense you can let go and
get wild and play crazy
football "
However, Weaver
straddles the fence when
asked which position he
prefers
"I enjoyed playing of
fense," he said "We were a
real close group, and we took
pride in ourselves There's
that same feeling of pride on
defense "
Weaver noted a touch of
irony in his switch from
offense to defense During
his two years on offense,
"Jumbo" and his coun
terparts played under the
shadow of Herschel Walker
During that span. Weaver
felt the offensive line didn't
get the credit it deserved
Now that the great one is
gone. Weaver said the of
fensive line is finally getting
its kudos Unfortunately,
he's now or the other side of
the ball
As far as this year's team
goes. Weaver said its biggest
challenge is proving there is
indeed life after Herschel
"We know we re a com
plete team," Weaver said
"No man can carry a team
by himself If we are a
success this year it's mainly
because the players want it
so bad "
According to Dooley.

Weaver and company could
get their biggest test of the
season as Georgia opens its
Southeastern Conference
slate against the wishbone
attack of Mississippi State
Saturday between the
hedges
"They aren't big, but they
get low on you and really fire
off the ball," Dooley said of
the Maroons offensive line
“Mike Weaver plays too
high."
Jumbo, who had a team-
high 10 tackles last week
against South Carolina, said
he isn't losing any sleep over
Mississippi Slate's offensive
line
“I do have a tendency to
play a little high," he said
"I think I could stand
straight up and they would
still have a hard time
blocking me I don't believe
any one man can block me.”
Weaver said his plans, if
he remains healthy, are to
complete his education and
then play in the National
Football League or USFL,
thus ending the legacy of the
Meat Cleavers at Georgia
Wait Hold everything.
According to "Jumbo,"
he's got a cousin who's just
like a brother to him
"The last time I saw him
he was 6-2, 230 and still had
some room left to grow,"
Weaver said "He's looking
pretty closely at Georgia
right now."
Could it be? Meat Cleaver
