Golf team to play
first tournament
Out On A Limb

Dick Copas will only have
one chance to look at his
defending Southeastern Con
ference champion men's golf
team this fall, and he's hav
ing a hard time deciding who
he will take to the 18-team
Augusta International which
starts today
Copas is looking at a team
that lost lour regulars from
last year's squad Wayne
Smith, Jack lairkin. Bob
Walcott and Matt Fowler
Since classes at Georgia
started so late, the team has
only had two days to prac
tice
Junior Louis Brown and
sophomore Peter Persons
are the only returning
members on the team, but

good recruiting makes the
future look encouraging
Junior Chip Drewry and
sophomore Brad Weaver
were on the team last year
but did not play much and
both could be regulars this
season
Vance Veazy and Robbie
Cole are Copas' top recruits
and figure to have a good
chance to make the team
Veazy, from Mississippi,
ranked ninth nationally as a
junior last year, and Cole
was the number-one high
school player out of Georgia
"Sometimes they can step
right in and help,'' Copas
said of his freshmen "By
the time they get here
they're very mature "
But Copas' main concern,
he said, is replacing his four
regulars
"You're always going to
have to replace people,"
Copas explained "Lack of
experience is the mosl dif
ficult part todealwith"
Georgia will be dealing
with some experienced
teams in the three-day tour
nament at Augusta National
Clemson and North
Carolina, ranked fourth and
sixth nationally last year
respectively, will par
ticipate. as well as Alabama,
which lost to Georgia in a
play-off round at the SEC
meet a year ago
"I think we're going to
have to work harder this
year." Copas said, refering
to the team's prospects after
losing four regulars "So
meone will have to step for
ward and take charge, but
someone always has "

Tennis team to play at Clemson Classic
By BART MOORE
llad and Hlark Sufi WrHar
The first major step
toward finding replacements
for the graduated Tom
Foster and Ola Malmqvist
and for the absent Joe
Heldmann begins this
weekend, as the tennis team
travels to Clemson, S.C., to
compete in the Clemson
Classic
The tournament format
this year is different from
that of past years The

No. I through No. 3 in
doubles This year, the
tournament involves an open
draw of 64 in singles and 32 in
doubles
With the departure of
three of the top six seeds
from last year's squad, the
main item of business for
Georgia coach Dan Magill
and assistant Manual Diaz
has been finding suitable
replacements With that in
mind, Magill held a
qualifying tournament to
determine which newcomers
would make the trip to
Tigertown
Magill exempted two-year
letterman Allen Miller,
Deane Frey and George
Bezecny from qualifying
Everyone else competed thus
week for the right to go to
Clemson The top three
finishers in the qualifying
tourney would earn a draw
in the 64 man field
However, all is not lost for
those who did not qualify
because a substitute's
tournament is scheduled for
players not in the top six of
their respective teams
Michael Penfors faced
Danny Granot in the finals of
the qualifying tournament
late Thursday, while Phillip
Johnson and Jeff Wallace
squared off In the con
solation bracket The winner
would claim the final berth
in the field
Miller, Frey and Bezecny
all appear ready for combat,
according to Magill.
Freshmen Granot and
Johnson, however, have had
to overcome health
problems as well as the
inexperience factor
Granot injured a rotator
cuff which hampers his

college champion Penfors
has risen fo the head of the
pack
"Penfors has been playing
the best of the newcomers."
Magill said "Then again, he
is about the only one who
hasn't been hurt.”
As far as doubles is con
cerned. Magill is faced with
replacing Malmqvist. half of
college tennis' national
champion doubles team
Penfors gets the first crack
at replacing Malmqvist. as
he will team with Miller in
the Clemson Classic The
other two doubles teams
have not been decided yet
