‘Abortion... what a woman’s conscience will allow ’
1 nt rail rUK:
It IS quite difficult to find a
meaningful statement on the
subject of abortion Both
opponents and supporters of
abortion couch their
arguments in meaningless
terms such as ' the right to
life'’ and "social costs ” This
produces debates which are,
at best, unintelligible The
proper basis for an analysis
of abortion is in every
person s total right of self
ownership
Self-ownership automati
cally implies that each
woman has total sovereignty
over her body and
everything within it, in
cluding a fetus Granted,
most fetuses are in the womb
because the mother agrees
to the situation, but the fetus
is there only by the woman's
freely-granted consent. If
the mother decides that she
no longer wants the fetus,
then it becomes a parasitic
invader of her person, and
she has the inalienable right
to remove it from her body
Abortion is the removal of an
unwanted invader from a
woman's body; therefore,
laws which restrict or
prohibit abortion violate the
mother's right to life and
property
The principle argument of
anti-abortionists is that the
fetus is a human being and
that abortion is a violation of
the rights of the fetus
Whether a fetus is indeed a
human being is a debatable
point, but it is also a
meaningless point. If a fetus
is a living human being
entitled to all human rights,
then we must ask what
humans have the right to
exist as parasites within the
body of an unwilling human
host Certainly no born
human can have such a
right, and therefore no fetus
has such a right
Anti-abortionists usually
point to abortion as a
violation of the fetus's "right
to life." It is impermissible
to interpret the right to life
as an enforceable claim on
the body of someone else.
Such a claim would violale
the mother’s right of self
ownership Clearly this
would then make the
mother’s right to life
meaningless, for what good
is life without the right to-
control it?
Each individual
must decide for herself
whether her conscience will
allow her to have an abor
tion.
