Funds to better pedestrian
safety probable by June
By WILLIAM SMITH

The University Public
Safety division will
receive a $28,000 grant
from the state highway
department next month
to implement campus
pedestrian safety im
provements, Public
Safety Director Asa
Boynton said Wednesday
“Highway Department
officials have given us
every indication that we
will get the money we
requested." Boynton
said “We're just waiting
on the official word "
Boynton said Highway
Department officials
want to use the Unlver
ally pedestrian safety
plan as a model for future
programs around the
state since the Public
Safety plan is the first of
its kind in the state
Public Safety officials
have conducted a study
on pedestrian safety
improvements on
campus, and Boynton
said officials would use
the money from the
Highway Department to
fund any recommended
improvements
“We simply don't have
the money to pay for
these changes out of our
operating budget."
Boynton said
The money will be used
to install flashing lights
in dangerous in
tersections, to post
warning signs for
pedestrians around
campus and to increase
general public awareness
about pedestrian safety,
Boynton said
Any safety im
provements paid for by
the Highway Department
grant will be im
plemented before the end
of 1984, hr added
Boynton said he also
met with Physical Plant
officials to conduct a
different pedestrian
safety plan, which will
involve relocating about
75 percent of campus
crosswalks by next fall
The crosswalk im
provements, to be paid
for out of the Physical
Plant operating budget,
involve installing several
new crosswalks, moving
present crosswalks to
safer locations, moving
bus stops away from
intersections and posting
traffic signs in potentially
dangerous pedestrain
crossings, Boynton said.
“We’re taking a go-
slow attitude to let people
know about their rights,
but we intend to even
tually enforce the law
down to jaywalking,"
Boynton said.

Although seniors ex
perience a great deal of
stress, most are able to deal
with the pressure and use it
as a positive force, said Anne
Seawell, the director of
Career Planning and
Placement.
“Stress tends to give you
something to work for,"
Seawell said The key is to
realize stress is natural and
everyone experiences it. she
added
Stress is a necessary force
that is not always negative,
said Robert Bretscher,
counselor at the mental
health clinic of the Gilbert
Health Center
Many students experience
stress because of the nature
of their classroom work "A
great amount of mental
activity at high levels of
abstraction is very difficult
work,” he said A regular job
where duties are spelled out
is often easier in the short
term, he added
The pressures that seniors
experience vary greatly

experience pressure from
home to get a job, while
others are concerned with
paying back financis' aid or
leaving their friends
Many good students also
must deal with too many
people telling them what to
do The student should relax
and do what he thinks is best,
she said.
If students use the stress to
their advantage and don't
panic, it can be a motivator.
Bretscher said.
Seniors often must deal
with several pressures at

and interviews is difficult,
said Dennis Chastain, a

But tor students planning
to enter grad school, stress
can take a different form,
according to Chris Caldwell.
a senior psychology major
"Keeping my grades up to go
to grad school Is stressful,”
Caldwell said.
Students today experience
different kinds of stress than
students in the past. SeaweH
said. The United States has
undergone 10 years of
pushing higher education,
but not industry This has led
to more economic pressure
on today's students, she said
Students wanting work m
fields involving natural

pressure that thes.e
resources might not always
exist, Seawell said.
Seniors need to pursue
what they can do well and
want to do, she sail)
Although some seniors feel
pressured to stay in a certain
region or to receive a high j
salary, these goals should be ;
secondary, she added •

You don’t have to be
an “A” student
to know you should
always be prepared.
It doesn't lake a genius
to know just how impor
tanl a Sheik condom can
be.
Measuring a thin three
one thousandths of an
inch. Sheik condoms offer
the perfect balance of
strength and sensitivity.
if they were any thinner,
you wouldn't feel quite so
safe. Any thicker and you
wouldn't feel all there is to
feel.
hid lllh I
In fact Sheik condoms
are actually tested up to
seven different times bv
advanced scientific tech
nioues-including individ
ual electronic testing.
Yet with all their strength,
they feel so natural you'd
swear you weren't wearing
a condom at all
Always be prepared
with Sheik condoms and
prove just how smart you
really are.
