Local members of the
Baha'i faith are making an
effort to inform the public of
the ongoing persecutions of
Baha'is by the Iranian
government
"Baha'i! here, like
everywhere in the United
States, have been involved in
educating the public about
persecutions in Iran," said
Sohayl Moshtael, secretary
for the Spiritual Assembly of
the Baha'is of Clarke
County “We don't want
anyone to turn to us and sav
‘We didn't know
He said that while Baha'is,
whose faith is now banned in
Iran, have always been
persecuted there, the per
secution is now more
systematic
More than 1,000 members
of the Baha'i faith have been
jailed in Iran over the past
two years, and more than 170
Baha'is have been executed
since 1970, said Robin
Neiheisel, public affairs
representative for Baha'is of
Clarke County
The local Spiritual
Assemblies of the Baha'is
have approximately 3$
members
"Everytimc you pick up
the phone and talk to a friend
you find out about another
friend or another family
member who has been put in
prison," Moshtael said "We
are going to continue to
educate the people in Clarke
County in any and every way
possible "
Among the group's efforts
to publicize the persecutions
was a public meeting held in
May 1983 when the Baha is

"We've also tried to in

the public more aware
through our contacts with
professors, friends,
neighbors and the media,"
Neiheisel said

Amnesty International
also tries to publicize the
persecutions through its
monthly column in the

Hopefully the fact that
iblic opinion is brought to
tar will be motivation
enough for them to stop,"
said Jeannie Jenkins, a
University graduate student
in Zoology and Amnesty In
ternational member
Mahmood Monshipouri. an
Iranian graduate student in
Political Science at the
University, said although
world opinion of the per
secutions "cannot be
overlooked I don't think
international opinion will
have much of an impact."
Ka
He said this is because the
Ayatollah Khomeini
"capitalizes on Iranian
lower class opinion" for his
political power
Monshipouri said for the
average Iranian man on the
street, who is "not
educated" and "easily
manipulated," the im
pression is that Baha is are
linked to outside forces, such
as the United States, Israel
and South Africa.
“In my opinion, the reason
why the Iranian government
is persecuting the Baha'is is
that they perceive the
Baha'is to be a threat to their
authority," Neiheisel said.
She said Baha'i teachings,
which include universal
education, the equality of
men and women, the Baha'i
belief that there were
prophets after Mohammed
and the fact the the Baha'i
faith has no clergy, would
threaten the Iranian
government

ACLU calls marshal
inquiry inadequate
By JOE CAFIERO
K« .«! Btedt tester Rretetef
A U S. Department of Justice Investigation into an
incident in which a federal marshal impersonated a
reporter to serve a warrant on an Athens woman last
October is inadequate, an Athens American Civil
Liberties Union spokesman said Wednesday
The Department 's Office of Professional Responsibility
began an investigation of the incident after the publishers
of the Athens Observer, The Athens Banner-Herald, The
Athens Daily News and the general manager of The Red
and Black sent letters to Athens Mayor Lauren Coile,
Police Chief Everett Price and U S. Attorney General
William French Smith protesting the marshal's actions
Mike Nicholson, a Athens ACLU board member, said he
thinks the Justice Department and its Office of
Professional Responsibility want to ignore the case.
"They want to get rid of the case, once and for all,"
Nicholson said "But for the ACLU and the press, the case
should never be closed "
The Athens Banner Herald The Daily News publisher
Robert Chambers said he thinks the marshal's conduct
was unethical, even if it wasn't illegal
"In effect, they condoned what the marshal did,"
Chambers said
He added that he still condemns the marshal s actions
and hopes that other Athens publishers will do the same
The Athens Observer publisher Pete McCommons said
he didn't receive a letter informing him of the in
vestigation results
McCommons said he did see a copy of the letter mailed
to Athens ACLU President John English.
"The letter shows that all they ithe Justice Depart
ment i did was go through the motions ot answering our
protest," McCommons said
He said he doesn't think the Office of Professional
Responsibility has made a serious effort to analyze the
incident
Richard Rogers of the Office of Professional Respon
sibility said the investigation didn't reveal any illegal
behavior on the part of the federal marshal
“I wouldn't consider it (the marshal's behavior! a
masquerade as far as the facts go," Rogers said
But Nicholson said, although he considers the incident
minor, the actions of the marshal will set a dangerous
preccndent if the Justice Department doesn’t condemn
them
