A critical guide
AROUND TOWN
40 Watt Uptown — July 19:
oh-OK. Oh all right (OK?),
enough of the yard sale
philosophizing about Athens'
cute little pop ingenues
Here's the musical rundown
Oh-OK's swirling art-school
nursery rhymes have always
gained their irresistibility
annoyance) from vocalist
Linda Hopper's good-
natured, baby-talking and
.(tempted harmonizing with
bassist Lynda Stipe When
these two women jam
lingers in ears and start
singing (?) with
unabashedly poor results, I
start looking for the exits
But fortunately, Hopper and
Stipe have some help,
although the cast of sup
porting characters often
changes Drummer David
McNair, the band's second
beat keeper, pounds away
relentlessly with an ex
citement and hard-edged
energy that belies all the
other accompanying
proceedings He is the sole
reason Oh-OK is referred to
as a dance band, and if you
can't move to this guy's
bashing, give Chad Everett a
call Along with McNair,
guitarist Lynn Blakey
(replacing Matthew Sweet)
adds a bit of credibility
among the nonsense, playing
with enthusiasm the in
fectious, though unoriginal
riffs and hooks that Sweet
brought to life during his
brief stint. The result of all
this musicianship is a
simplistic, sparse pop sound
(catchy, but forgettable),
reminiscent of Let s Active
at its most bland. But still,
new songs like "Such 'n'
Such" are fascinating, and if
the band can ever convince
keyboardist Brian Cooke to
return. I'll consider its
plight 1 just wish the self-
serving cutesiness of this
band would be given a rest
for awhile The schtick is
amusing, but it's been done
more amusingly If you don't
believe me, pick up an old
Cosmopolitans’ single July
20 Dreams So Real. It is
truly astonishing this
band, only a few months old,
almost have the most
eiWipelling and well-
conceived sound of any band
in this town Singer/guitarisl
Barry Marler churns out a
remarkable combination of
textured, alluring leads and
jagged, abrasive chunks of
feedback and metal, while
an able rhythm section
pumps fire into the mix
Some of the band's material
does need closer editing (like
this column) and I still don’t
know what Marler is singing
about But the mere fact that
1 only can register minor
complaints against a band
still toiling in tis formative
stages speaks volumes for
its future

‘ Starfighter,’ a mindless adventure film, fails
A review of "The Last

Pictures release. Now-

By JOE SCHWARTZ

"The Last Starfighter"
could have been a good film,
but it isn't The plot is simple
enough A video game ace is
recruited to save the
universe But instead of
living up to its potential as a
mindless adventure film, the
picture gets lost along the
way as it tries un
successfully to be a human
drama.
. Alex is about 1H He lives in
a trailer park and dreams of
greatness, but it looks like
he'll never be able to turn his
dreams into reality He'll
live and die and never make
a wave.
The only interesting things
in his life are his girlfriend
and video games. His
favorite game was actually-
developed by an alien to see
if anyone on earth could help
save the universe against the
bad guys Because of his
skill at the game, he gets his
chance to go new places and
save the world, but he
doesn't want to
Here's where the problem
comes in Alex’s emotional
conflicts become the movie's
main concern. The only big
adventure scene in the entire
film, his big battle, is over
almost immediately. It's as
if the director wanted to get
past it in order to go on to
something more important,
like another personal
dilemma
There are some good
special effects, and the
animation in the film is
excellent Thankfully, these
things provide a nice
diversion when the plot gets
too annoying to pay attention
to
Aside from the special
effects and the few action
scenes, the only worthwhile
footage is a robot copy of
Alex that stays behind on
earth to take his place.
Robert Preston, best
known for his recent role in
"Victor, Victoria," and for
his classic performance in
"The Music Man,” takes a
big step down to portray the
alien in search of star-
fighters. He’s a good actor,
sure, but lie's wasted in this
film.
The only real acting called
for is by Lance Guest, who
makes his way through a
number of truly difficult
situations such as: Who are
these people? I don't want to
die. I don’t want to kill
others I don’t want to leave
home And last but not least,
what about my girlfriend?
He drudges through these
problems with the emotional
intensity of catatonic. In
fact, this film is an excellent
vehicle for his career if he
wants a very short one.
"The Last Starfighter"
isn’t a terrible film. But on
the other hand, it isn’t worth
paying to see.
