Georgia safety may miss opener §
Hiatt and Win- tteperU
The coincidence, bnitally obvious. ha» lo unsettle Jeff San
chez
For the second season in a row, Sanchez, an All-
Southeastern Conference safety for (Georgia in 1982. will like
ly miss the Bulldogs' opening game Georgia opens its season
Sept 8 against Southern Mississippi
The 6-loot. 183-pound redshirt senior underwent shoulder
surgery late this past week after suffering a partial disloca
tion of his left shoulder two weeks ago while playing basket
ball with players from Southern California and UCLA A pin
was inserted in Sanchez's shoulder this past Saturday
"I don't know how long it's going to take, ' Sanchez told the
Atlanta Constitution. "They're saying it will lake two months
to heal properly, and if that's the case I could miss two
games But I hope to get back before then "
"Jeff will bounce back from it quicker than moat because
he's in such good shape." said Georgia trainer Warren Mor
ris "But it still takes time to heal "
Sanchez's season ended in similar fashion this past year
when he shattered a bone in his forearm during an April
spring practice scrimmage Faced with the prospect of play
ing briefly at the end of the year Sanchez decided to redshirt
and retain another year of eligibility
He participated in spring practice this year, apparently
recovered from the wrist injury, but was bothered by an in
jury to the same shoulder that was operated on this past
week
To compensate for Sanchez's loss at safety. Georgia coach
Vince Dooley will move roverback John Little, who frequent
ly filled In for the injured Terry Hoagc. lo safety, where he
worked some during the spring Redshirt freshman Mike
Brown and eornerbacks Tony Flack and Andre Holmes will
also practice at the position in the fall

CFA, conferences negotiate contracts
NEW YORK (API - The
College Football
Association and the Pacific
10-Big Ten conference
coalition have begun
shuttle talks with two
networks in an effort to
come up with a package for
telecasting games this
season
Chuck Neinas, president
of the CFA. and other
members of the group met
Monday with CBS and
planned to meet Tuesday
with ABC ABC met
Tuesday morning with the
Pac-10-Big Ten coalition,
which then shuttled over to
CBS for an afternoon
meeting
Mark Carlson, a
spokesman for CBS, said
no money was discussed
with the CFA in the
preliminary meeting,
"because we're still
waiting for some figures to
come back from our
research department ”
ABC spokesman Donn
Bernstein said his network
likewise, had not talked
specifics with either Big
Ten Commissioner Wayne
Duke or Pac-10 Com
missioner Tom Hansen
The two-pronged
television sweepstakes
began last week when all 63
members of the CFA
signed up for a CFA-
administered national
television package None of
the Pac-10 or Big Ten
schools are CFA members
The Supreme Court
recently invalidated a $68 3
million package offered to
the NCAA by CBS and ABC
as being in violation of
federal antitrust laws The
two college groups
reportedly would like to try
to match that offer in their
own negotiations
“We'd still like to see a
coalition - the Pac-10-Big
Ten and CFA together."
Bernstein said "We've felt
that way from day one But
it appears that's a dead
issue "
Originally, it was
reported that the CFA was”
leaning toward ABC. while
the Pac-10-Big Ten group
was leaning toward CBS
The CFA, unlike the Pac-
10-Big Ten. already has a
package in mind, but
Carlson said it wasn't
discussed with CBS
“We’re trying at the
moment to find out what's
being asked, what the two
plans are," Carlson said
Then we ll go from there.
It's possible there could be
something by the end of the
week, but in my mind
that's doubtful.

Wade and Tim McCormick
combined for 42 points,
