Dream Syndicate astray with album
A critical guide
AROl'ND TOWN
40 Watt Uptown — July 26
Xfrikan Dreamland. Ten
nessee raslas play a blend of
reggae, blues and gospel
with laid-back sincerity.
July 27: Fashionbattery and
Tragic Dancers. At the end
of fall. Fashionbattery
seemed to have stagnated in
a moody, detached dance-
pop rut. despite the fuhous
drumming of Harry Joiner
Frankly, the band's shows
tended to get a bit
monotonous, and until
vocalist Sean O'Brien lets up
on the ian Curtis (Tom
Cheek i moaning affectation
and guitarist Keith Landers
pashes his riffs out front,
problems will persist This is
a very' talented band, but I'm
Just unsure about what
direction they want to take
Tragic Dancers, on the other
hand, were improving by
leaps and bounds by the end
of fall, and singer/guitarist
Gary Greenblatt was
building his confidence,
singing the band's high- -
mindeo (at least they're
trying i pop/rock com
positions with good-natured
personality Guitarist Bill
Smith has swallowed the
Jam discography, and it
shows, but his songwriting
and perseverance are
refreshing and need to be
complimented. Any guy

hard has to stumble onto
something truly chilling
before too long They aren't
that far from il now

Uptown Lounge — July 26:
The Primates. Just more
than a year ago, these guys
would struggle through a
drunken, southern-fried ‘
version of "God Save the
Queen," but now the howling
blues licks of guitarist Mike
Wigham and brash rural-
poetic lyrics of bassist Eric
Sales are beginning to mesh
into a sound ot which the
band can be proud The
Primates worship such hell-
raisin' influences as the
Blasters, George Thorogood
and even Jason and the

— Charles Aaron
A review of "Medicine
Show," by the Dream
Syndicate. Produced bv
Sandy Pearlman. An A & M
Records release.
By CHARLES AARON
Kwl »nd Black kntrrtaimnriil fcdilnr
Admittedly, the Dream
Syndicate's first album.
“The Days of Wine and
Roses," begged for an
almost staggering leap of
faith.
As blatantly as any band
since the Human Switch
board. the Dream Syn
dicate flaunted its Velvet
Underground (not to men
tion Iggy and the Stooges)
affection (affliction) with
unrestrained grade-school
spite. Raging inside a
stratum of feedback and
coolly rambling narratives
were songs that skidded
("Definitely Clean"),
crashed ("When You
Smile”) and mesmerized
(Tell Me When It’s Over ”)
"Medicine Show,” the
band's second project
(minus bassist Kendra
Smith) look about six
months more than planned
to complete, and supposedly,
lots of bucks to assemble (A
& M footed the bill instead of
Slash.) The effort to expand
the band's commercial
appeal is obvious in the
refined, no-feedback allow-
ed performance of guitar

hero-to-be Karl Precoda and
the mellowing addition ot
some rather standard
keyboard fills What is also
obvious is that the Dream
Syndicate probably could've
saved all that time, trouble
and money (Styx could use a
raise) and made an album
that is actually worth a crap
and representative of Wynn,
Precoda, drummer Dennis
Duck and bassist Dave Pro
vost's monstrous abilities.
The band didn't have to
rework the raw, screeching
wall-of- sound grunge of the
first album, but neither did it
have to abandon its spon
taneity
In the metallic hands of
producer Sandy Pearlman
(Blue Oyster Cult, the
Clash's "Give 'Em Enough
Rope,") Wynn's bluesy,
storytelling sneer sounds
both rushed and calculated
And when he does hit a
conversational groove
("Armed With an Empty
Gun,”) a limply incomplete
narrative betrays the ellort
Pearlman most effectively
works his voodoo on
Precoda, coaxing lazy,
structured leads that would
make even Tom Petty
-cringe. This from the man-
who once terrorized guitar
convention with such
apocalyptic intensity that he
transformed a simple chord
into a metal-steeped
religious experience. If
Wynn wants to horn in old
"TP 's" mainstream real
estate, Precoda, sadly,
seems willing and able.
The problems with "Burn”
illustrate the travesty of this
potentially excellent record
Played live, one can imagine
the song changed into a
majestic, emotional tale of
tortured hope, with Precoda
cutting loose on the breaks
and Wynn scowling while
reading the album's best
verse, “There was this
friend that you and I
had/ There were a few things
that he believed in Well one
by one he found some flaws
and now he's not so sure "
But on "Medicine Show,” the
song is merely catchy and
pleasant
Two cuts, the title tune and
“Still Holding On To You,"
which cops more than a few
tricks from "Tell Me When
It's Over," stand as vivid
testament to the Dream
Syndicate's possible
greatness.
“Medicine Show" is a
rumbling, portentous epic in
which Wynn’s Lou
Reed (Iggy Pop fetishes
enthrall instead of annoy
alongside Precoda’s
brooding, vibrato hum. And
"Still Hold Holding On to
You” is arranged neatly
with drum whacks
triggering organ quavers
and Wynn's forceful singing
Still, the whole process
seems studied and a bit
careful Wynn has com
mented that only 'lazy fat
asses” will be surprised by
the album, but he seems to
be bending over backwards
to justify the expenditure of
A 8 M's money. This album
is not an encouraging "hard
rock" breakthrough It is
rather the portrait of a band
led astray and headed
toward a quick burnout.
The Dream Syndicate was
1983's most promising
musical idea. Let's hope it
proves why in 1984
