The University libraries
are moving forward in
technology with the
development of an on-line
computer catalog system
The on-line catalog,
available to faculty, staff
and students, is the third
step in the library's book
processing automation
advances
It will be a long time
before the system is com
pleted but we are very ex
cited about having this
system available,'' said
library Director David
Bishop
There are four computer
terminals under the
direction of a small main
computer housed between
the mam library and the
science library The on-line
catalog system's memory
contains a list of all the
books and materials
received by the library since
1978.
Bishop said he could say
how much money would be
spent on the new system "I
can t state a figure," he said
"All the money is from the
state's library budget ”
Future plans for the
system include a new and
more complex main
computer with up to 15
terminals to be installed
during winter quarter
Lists of the library’s
acquisitions should be added
to the system in the next four
to five years
"We think over time that
it will be a real benefit to
all library users," bishop
said.
The system is in an ex
perimental phase now
“The purpose of the
system is to allow the public
to take a look at what is
being developed The library
is evaluating how the public
uses the system and the
problems occuring within
the system to improve future
advances, said Bill Clayton,
the chairman of the library
system committee that
designed screen formats for
the on-line catalog system
The system, although in its
early phase, is still more
extensive than the card
catalog. Following the same
structure as the card
catalog, information can be
found through a title search,
subject search, or a
numerical search. The
system has two to three
options in each major area,
Bishop said
The title search allows one
to locate materials by .the
full title, a keyword from the

Cliff Brown, a special

in an affidavit that he was
advised that a reliable
confidential informant was
hired to fly a passenger
plane to Colombia. South
America "to obtain ap
proximately 800 pounds of

Brown said the plane was
monitored Oct 2 as it
departed an airport in Fcrt

tracked it header! in the

He said the pla.ie.

that emitted a beeper signal,
was picked up again on
radar late Wednesday in

mechanical problems forced
it to land

A ground surveillance
team was set up around the
Greenville Airport and
Brown said the agent flying
the plane, using a secret
code supplied by ;he in

with the accused co
conspirators by radio
Brown said the pilot was
told in the radio con-

touched down he observed a

title, or by the author. This
area can also double as a
subject finder. Bishop said.
Tne subject search may be
used to find a particular
subject and to browse
through the various titles.
This system can locate a
particular phrase within a
subject area among all the
works the library has or is
processing at the time, he
said.
The numerical search
gives a listing of all the
books under a given call
number, he said.
The system's most useful
feature involves less
movement for the students.
The computer will save steps
by giving the name of the

book, its location, and
whether it's available for use
at the time, he said.
Though the staff will assist
students, the system is self-
sufficient, Bishop said. The
major keys used are self-
explanatory with the in
clusion of a HELP key to
better explain vague points
Although the new system
will be more efficient, the old
card catalog still will be in
use
“By no means will the
card catalog be discarded,"
Bishop said
There are training
sessions planned for groups,
although individual in
struction is available.

The $75,000 redecoration
project at University
President Fred Davison's
house is financed totally
through private donations,
according to a University
spokesman
The project, which con
sists mainly of new, custom-
made carpet and draperies
for the $1.7 million house,
caused a controversy this
summer when details of the
project appeared in the
media. However, raising the
money was no problem, said
Larry Dendy, the Univer
sity's assistant director of
public relations.
"When the initial publicity
got out about the cost of the
carpet, these people just
volunteered," Dendy said.
The new carpet and
draperies will have basically
the same design as the ones
they are replacing, Dendy
said.
Dendy added that the
timing of the project fit well
into the University's
Bicentennial celebration,
although the redecoration
"really needed to be done
anyway.”
The house had not been
redecorated since 1967, when
Harold G Wescott, a former
University art professor,
devised a plan to redecorate
the house.
Although funds have
already been raised,
Physical Plant employees
won’t begin working on the
house until later this month
when the carpet and
draperies are supposed to
arrive, Dendy said.
Dendy and Physical Plant
employees said Wednesday
they didn’t know the names
of the designers of the
materials
