Polls say Mondale
won first debate
~ President Reagan and a buoyant Walter F
Mondale corn ted support from Italian-Americans on
(olumbus Day. pressing their campaign battle for "the soul
of our country" one day after a televised debate that neutral
polls indicated was a clear-cut triumph for the Democratic
challenger
Mondale and running mate Geraldine Ferraro marched
past thousands of supporters at a holiday parade in
Manhattan, prelude to his fast-paced tour through nor
theastern and midwestern industrial states.
Vice President George Bush carried the Republican
banner in the same parade, while Reagan said in North
Carolina that there is "opportunity unlimited" in America
"That is what we are about to restore for all of us," he said.
Reagan then traveled to Baltimore, where he dedicated a
statue of Christopher Columbus and jabbed at Mondale —
without mentioning his name — for being among the
"pessimists who can't bring themselves to admit America >s
back on the right track.”
The president said that attitude reminded him of what
Baltimore favorite son H L Mencken said of the Puritans:
the haunting fear that someone, somewhere may be
happy."
Reagan and Mondale both said they would leave it to the
voters to decide who won the debate — to be followed on
Thursday by a clash between vice presidential candidates,
and a return match between the presidential candidates on
Oct . 21
W hile both sides claimed victory in Sunday night's clash,
White House aides conceded that Mondale's showing was
good enough to help him in the polls
' W e don t think we lost the debate," said White House chief
of staff James A Baker III. adding that Mondale failed to
deliver a knock-out punch that would narrow the public
opinion polls dramatically
The challenger, struggling to overcome a deficit of 15
points or more in most public opinion polls, was clearly
upbeat as he arrived in New York for the parade
Mondale aides said their own poll showed the- Democrat a
clear winner and campaign manager Bob Beckel said, "We
expect this to lead to a tightening of the race "
In an overnight survey conducted for Newsweek magazine.
54 percent of those polled rated Mondale the winnner,
compared with 35 percent for the president Even so, a
majority also said Reagan was "more capable of dealing
with t he country 's problems ’ ’
Hank Williams Jr. picks away Friday in Coliseum
Tuesday, October t, Ifl84 The Red and Black Page;
Hank plays lazy set,
shows little emotion

were just running through the
motions.

The University Union did
its part Friday night by
bringing Hank Williams Jr
to the Coliseum, but Hank
failed to live up to the
bargain.
He played an incredibly
lazy set. showing little
emotion and giving the
appearance that he didn't
care He seemed to spend
more time wandering
around off-stage talking with
the roadies than he did on
stage playing.
And when he was on stage,
he played uninspired music,
as if he were just running
through the motions. Of the
20 or so songs he and the
'Bama Band performed,
only a handful were moving.
Not once did he thank the
crowd for its support, which
was tremendous He simply
showed up via private jet
and limo, performed his
standard set and blew out of
the Coliseum before his band
had even finished closing out
"Kaw-Liga," the evening's
final and one of its better
songs. But even that was
marred when Hank, bare-
chester and brawny, stood
atop a piano and fired blanks
from his ivory pistol at
members of his crew. It was
the most ludicrous — and
sad — moment this reviewer
has ever experienced at a
live show
To be fair, the evening had
its moments. Hank started
strong with "Man of Steel,"
and “LaGrange," a ZZ Top
tune he covered without
vocals. "Gonna Go Huntin'
Tonight" was strong, with
Hank pounding away on the
keyboards, and "Attitude
Adjustment,” his current
single, was also on line.'
But the songs most wanted
to hear — his older hits like
"Outlaw Women,'' "Old
Habits," "Family
Tradition," etc. — were
given cursory run-throughs
by Hank and the band
He dropped lines all night
long, often singing just one
verse or chorus of a song,
segueing into another tune
without stopping.
Opening act Leon Russell
was in good form. He played
a long set, consisting mostly
of covers ("Georgia (On My
Mind)," "Tennessee Waltz,"
"Wild Horses") and a few
originals (“The Island" was
the best of them). In the end,
he proved more entertaining
than Hank.
The crowd was boisterous
and rowdy, as Hank's
crowds usually are. The
Tennessee whiskey he so
often sings about was in
abundance Friday night.
Interesting, the audience
responded well to Hank's
set There seemed to be few
disappointed fans, and most
spoke well of the show
But musically it was not a
good show at all — en
tertaining, yes, but lacking
quality
The Union deserves praise
for sticking its neck out and
bringing a country act to
campus, but next time let's
get someone who won't
waste our time.

USA Today bannered a poll of its own that reported
Mondale a narrower winner. 39 percent to 34 percent
White House aides said their polling indicated the president
had won. although spokesman Larry Speakes said, “It's the
race going to narrow It always does "
