Georgia is wary

Georgia senior center Peter Anderson said he assures
everyone that there will be no chance of a letdown Saturday
when 15th-ranked Georgia hosts Ole Miss at Sanford
Stadium.
"We ve learned out lesson," Anderson said, referring to
the Dogs 17-10 loss at South Carolina after they had beaten
Clemson the week before "It’s obvious Ole Miss is a good
team this year "
Georgia 13-1-0) took care of Alabama 24-14 last week, but
the attitude of the Bulldogs this week is that they won't allow
for a letdown like they did at South Carolina because this is a
conference game
"We're playing in the SEC now and we have to all pull
together to reach our goal of the conference championship,"
Anderson said "We have to play mainly with our hearts, but
we have the capability of winning the SEC."
Coach Vince Dooley would probably rather his team put in
a little muscle along with the heart, and. as usual, he had
plenty of good things to say about the opposition
"Ole Miss is a fine a coached team as I’ve seen in some
time." Dooley said "They area sound football team and they
execute the fundamentals well They don't beat themselves ,"
Dooley quickly pointed to the Rebels’ defense as the reason
they have begun the year with a 3-1-1 mark and have lost only
one regular season game since Georgia beat them last year.
36-11 in Oxford
"Ole Miss leads the SEC in total defense, is second in
rushing defense and is first in scoring defense," Dooley said
They play tremendously spirited football
At the heart of this defense is right end Freddie Joe Nunn,
who Dooley compared to Freddie Gilbert, an All-American
defensive end at Georgia
It's on the offensive side of the ball where Dooley said the
Rebels were having some problems, though it hasn't really
hurt the team
"Their offense compliments their defense because they
make very few turnovers (five in five games)," Dooley said
They keep the football a lot, but they've had trouble sticking
it in the endzone
Junior Kent Austin has only thrown one interception in 13*
attempts as the Rebel quarterback, and running backs
Nathan Wonsley and Arthur Humphrey have over 250 yards
rushing each
"Ole Miss mixes up their plays real well," junior
linebacker Bill Mitchell said "They have two good running
hacks and Austin is a good passer He's a good scrambler
from what I can remember "
On the Georgia side, flanker Fred Lane has recovered from
a shoulder injury which has kept him out of two games and
will play against Ole Miss
Dooley said he needs to play Tony Mangram more in the
hackfield and that freshmen Lars Tate and Cleveland Gary
will split time at tailback He also indicated he would like to
use redshirt freshman David Dukes some this week at
quarterback
In other developments, offensive lineman Mack Burroughs
returned to practice; Troy Sadowski is playing at tight end as
well as tackle; and Aaron Chubb, who was going to he red-
shirted, will move to linebacker due to Kenny Driskell's knee
injury against Alabama
Notes; Georgia's J V. squad will host Tennessee Military
Sunday at 2 p m. at Sanford Stadium Tickets will be sold at
the game for $3

The Georgia cross country team has reached new heights
the last few years and much of that success can be attributed
to two-time All Southeastern Conference junior Sean Nicholl.
For the last two years Nicholl has lead all Bulldog distance
runners and was the first runner in Georgia history to qualify
for the NCAA cross country finals.
II has not been by chance that the Dogs' cross country team
has undergone such vast improvement. It has been the
conscious effort of head coach Jon Fox to build a stronger
squad through vigorous recruitment and training. Had Fox
not applied these efforts, Nicholl might not be in a Dogs’
uniform today.
In 1981, Fox decided he must look far and wide for a
distance runner with enough talent to run the Georgia cross
country team around. He found that runner in Johannesburg,
South Africa, where Nicholl was attending high school and
competing in various sports. One of those sports was cross
country
Nicholl has proven to be exactly what Fox needed. He
began running seriously at the age of 15, and at 18, he finished
second in the South African National Cross Country Cham
pionships
Shortly after graduation, Nicholl arrived at Georgia and
began training under Fox. However, success did not come
easily for him. In fact, he called his first year at Georgia the
low-point of his career. Although he was exceptionally im-'
pressive in (raining that first year, he could never seem to
run as well in the meets.
“I could never seem to put it together," he said. "I would
have some of the best workouts in the conference, but it just
wasn't thereat the meets."
Some of the problems could be attributed to the sudden
cultural change he had undergone or to typical freshman
overaggressiveness. But Nicholl is not one to make excuses,
“Americans don't want to hear excuses," he said.
"Americans are interested in results.”
He listed his high point as last year’s Virginia Invitational
where he finished third.
"There were a lot of good runners there,” Nicholl said,
"even a few all All-Americans,”
As one could imagine, II takes a great deal of rigorous
conditioning to compete in cross country on the college level
Nicholl runs about 12 miles a day year-round to stay in shape
for competition He averages between 71) and 90 miles a week
This type of training takes an enormous amount of
dedication. It is the word dedication that sums up Sean
Nicholl.
“U I didn't train during the summer, there is no way I
could expect to compete with the top runners in the SEC,"
Nicholl said.
Mast people don't realize the competitive nature of cross
country, which Nicholl is quick to point out
“Cross country is one of the most international of the
American collegiate events,” he said. "The best athletes
from around the world of college age are competing in the
US”
Most people don't understand the strategies of the long
distance runner either. Unlike football, a distance runner
can’t be expected to perform his best every week
“In football, you can play hard every week." Nicholl said.
"You can even play with some minor injuries and slill per
form well. This is not the case in distance competition "
He went on to explain that if he runs extremely hard one
week, he lakes it easier the next week so he doesn't expend
all of his energy lief ore the big meets.
Nicholl said he hopes to turn in his best performances at
the SEC and the NCAA meets, provided he qualifies.
Nicholl is an engineering major and hopes to one day own
his own mechanical engineering firm But for now, he would
consider slaying on at Georgia after gradualion and al
lending graduate school so he could continue running and
assist the cross country team. If his running continues to
improve, he might consider a professional career If not, he
would lie content with going into business.
Nicholl's accomplishments at Georgia include: third in
1983 SEC meet; NCAA All-Region cross country; first NCAA
cross country qualifier in Georgia history; Georgia school
record holder in 5,000-meters at 14:02; and fourth at the SEC
meet in 10,000-meters.
