Atlanta’s sports teams used to be worse
Face it Atlanta's sports teams are mediocre and boring
Each tram has a habit over the last few years of finishing
right at 500 Dullsville. It was much worse. Yes, there was a
time in the 1070s when all of Atlanta mourned their three
pathetic teams, the Braves, the Falcons and the Hawks God,
they were bad
The parade of duds was amazing How bad were they? Let
me count the ways.
The Braves, above anything else, were the laughing stock
of the league Sure, they had Hank Aaron shattering records
and Phil Niekro winning 15-20 games a year, but there was
absolutely no excuse for allowing the likes of Pat Rockett and
Darryl Chaney on the field
Darryl Chaney was like the Barry Manilow of baseball He
got no respect and deserved none When the Braves traded
baseball magician Mike Lum to the Reds for Chaney they
proudly stated, "This is just what we need, a solid shortstop,
he'll be here for ten years "
Try 220 and a hop, skip and a jump to the broadcast booth
where he performed as well as could be expected John
Sterling now has his Job and Chaney is doing P R work
So much for Chaney. The classic Brave during those years
of embarrassment was Dave "Chopper" Campbell He was
an original He had a motion that looked as if his arm would
break off on every pilch He had a handlebar moustache and
an eternal grimace on his face He was a fairly effective
pitcher in his day, despite his unusual appearance and
delivery The "Chopper" was the type of player that all bad
teams should have, laughable but lovable And you can't wait
until he gets traded
Front office fiascos were as common as fielding errors for
the Braves Rico Carty to Texas for Jim Panther Garry
Matthews to Philly for Bob Walk Then there was the In
famous Dusty Baker trade Dusty Baker and catcher Johnny
Oates to lam Angeles for Jim Wynn, Tom Paciorek, Lee I-acy
and Jerry Royster
Baker, of course, has had a productive career Oates
slipped into oblivion Lacy was traded back to the Dodgers
Jim Tremayne
later that year Paciorek was never used with the Braves,
was traded and he has since become a perennial 300 hitter
once he got a chance to start Jim Wynn lasted two years with
the Braves before being cut loose And you know about Jerry
Royster
The gist of the trade was Dusty Baker for Jerry Royster
Not quite Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio. but enough to make
you laugh or cry, depending on your allegiance
The likes of lion Schueler, Mike McQueen. Jack Aker, Carl
Morton and Mike Thompson always gave the opponents a big
enough lead to prompt Milo Hamilton, then the Braves an
nouncer, to sput the Immortal phrase that characterized the
era, “It's the ninth inning and time to go get 'em Braves! "
The Hawks only played half as many games as the Braves,
so you only laughed half as much Under Cotton Fitzsimmons
the Hawks had no gameplan, no bench and little defense
Walt Bellamy was in his last years and he still argued over
every foul called He scored over 20.000 points as a pro and to
this day believes he never committed a foul in the NBA
The Hawks had some beauties, too Dale Schleuter Big and
white. The only man in the NBA Dunk Competition who
couldn't jump, fine point, Dale
They had John Brown, the NBA’s premier brickmeister at
the time. Brown would be brought off the bench for his
defense, which was commendable But his shot was

something else If Brown would have stayed around long
enough he might have been the only man to break a back
board with a jumpshot The Hawks sent him to Chicago for
his trouble
The only redeeming quality about the Hawks back then
was Skip Caray The Fat Announcer had his perfect forum
for comedy Just himself on the airwaves the Hawks down by
20 He would go on about alimony checks and the latest rock
concert at the Omni
"Blue Oyster Cult 1 Tucky Buzzard 1 What is that 1 " he
would say
The Hawks of the mid-1970s were great only if you had a
sense of humor David Thompson and Marvin Webster sure
did They laughed all the way to the ABA when the Hawks
drafted them in 1976
The Falcons had many lovable players, "Cannonball"
Butler. John Zook, Claude Humphrey and Tommy Nobis
However, winning for them was a pipedreain
After the 1972 Olympics, the Falcons drafted Gerald
Tinker, the fastest man in the NFL Quarterback Bob Berry
finally had a speedster to throw to Unfortunately, Tinker
couldn't hang on to a football with a vat of Krazy Glue
Another experiment down the tubes Just like the one with
Dick Shiner at quarterback
I remember the first NFL game I ever saw , Kansas City
versus the Falcons Dave Hampton became the first Atlanta
runner to gam 1,000 in a season The game was stopped
Game ball was awarded Hampton lost seven yards on a
sweep on his last carry of the season, ending up with 997 I
wonder if he had to give the (sail back
So take heart, Atlanta fans It was much worse But I must
confess, I would prefer bad teams that are funny than
mediocre teams that put me to sleep, like the- Braves. Hawks
and Falcons do now
UberleadsPike
over AEPi, 22-14
By BOND MCKLES
Hnl iU BUck Suit Writer
Defense being the hot item that it is during this election
season, it was only fitting that Tuesday afternoon s Pi Kappa
Alpha vs Alpha Epsilon Pi intramural football game
showcased extraordinary defensive performances by both
teams It was the Pikes in the end, however, led by a hellbent
and frenzied Paul Uber. that won the game. 22-14
Uber, the guy with the Jack !-amber: face, the Mark
Gasinteau build and the Lawrence Taylor intensity, wreaked
havoc in the AEPi backfield all afternoon and neutralized
AEPis fine pass-and-catch tandem of Ronnie Sloton and
John Herskowitz His four sacks and two pass deflections, as
well as his play on offense, easily made him the player of the
game
“They were really tough." Uber said “They’ve got a lot of
short, stocky guys that hit real hard I enjoyed it but I got
tired out going both ways."
AEPi probably got tired of looking at Uber a lot quicker On
AEPis first possession, Uber slithered through the line from
his end position to sack quarterback Ronnie Sloton. One play
later, Jamie Pemer intercepted a Sloton pass to end the
threat
Sloton returned the favor on the Pikes’ first possession by
intercepting a Chris Tsoukalas pass But Perner struck again
on first down by nabbing yet another Sloton pass
After an unsuccessful possession by the Pikes, AEPi finally
scored on a six-play drive, thanks to an interference call in
the end zone On first down from the one, Sloton found
receiver Herskowitz to put AEPi up 6-0
But the Pikes came right back with a five-play drive of
their own A 37 yard pass from Tsoukalas to .Mark Scriba on
first dowm gave the Pikes a first down at the AEPi three
After a sack and an incompletion. Cber made a diving catch
just inside the goal line to tie the score Mark Scriba caught
the two-point conversion on the last play of the half
The Pikes took the second half kickoff and drove 40 yards
on passes to Uber. Mike Duvall, and Ross Brown Scriba then
snared the touchdown pass to give his team a 14-6 lead
Two more Uber sacks on AEPi s next possession forced a
punt
After the Pikes could do nothing. Uber spoiled another
AEPi drive by swatting down two passes, the second one on
fourth down
From the AEPi 16. Tsoukalas completed passes to Brown
and Scriba before taking it in himself on a quarterback draw
The pass to Brown for the conversion was good and the Pikes
led 22-6 with only 40 seconds to play
AEPi managed to score in the final seconds thanks to two
consecutive pass interference calls
Pike remains undefeated at 3^) w hile AEPi falls to 2-1
