Mondale activists in Athens

The Reagan administration's
domestic policies are violations of
human rights, civil rights and minority
rights, members of the Mondale-
Ferraro Victory tour said Monday
“He (Reagan) has violated your
rights." said Linda Hallenberg. founder
of the Georgia Women's political
caucus "The only rights this ad
ministration hasn't violated are those
of white male corporate executives who
make over 1100,000 a year," she said
The group of Atlanta women joined
with leaders of the Athens chapter of
the National Organization of Women
and local Mondale supporters to blast
Keagan on social issues in front of a
small but enthusiastic crowd of about
100 at the rally that lasted from noon to
I p.m Monday at College Square
Sharon Hannon, the coordinator of
the event, said that the rally was
organized by a loose consortium of
individual Democratic activists,
campaign officials from Atlanta and
members of the local chapter of NOW
The activists set up tables with pam-
‘The only poll that
counts is the vote you
make on election day’
— Jean Young
phlets, buttons and bumper stickers
and also had a table to sign up volun
leers for the campaign
“It is really important right now to
sign people up who are dedicated We
need people who can put in 24 hour days
during the last week or so of this
campaign, ” said Atlanta City Coun-
cilwoman Mary Davis.
She said the tour will travel to
Augusta, Savannah, Albany, Columbus
and Macon this week before another big
rally in Atlanta this weekend
Also present at the rally was Jean
Young, the wife of Atlanta Mayor
Andrew Young She spoke on the effect
the Keagan administration has had on
families, which she called devastating.
"Maybe if you have big investments,
like Reagan's friends, you're belter off
But if you think about the basic needs of
America’s families, this economy is in
big trouble," Young said.
Young dismissed the polls that show
Keagan has a large lead among
registered voters She said that most of
the polls were taken during the day,
vhen many middle class voters were at
work She also said that many poor
voters have no phones, and therefore
cannot be reached
"The polls they are taking do not
count The only poll that counts is the
vote you make on election day." Young
said
Several passersby on the street made
both negative and positive comments in
response to the message of the
speakers One male student, referring
to the assertion by Davis that she knew
about the situation in El Salvador
because she had been there, said.
"Then how about going back "
On the opposite side, a woman,
hearing the name of the president, said
out loud, "Reagan, he ain’t nothing at
all."
After the rally in Athens the Tour will
travel tomorrow to South Georgia,
Davis said

Very debatable
"Walter Mondalr is Gandhi without diapers. He's a
unilateral disarmer and he's a neo-isolationist." said Ralph
Reed (above) Thursday night during a drbate sponsored by
the lleminthrnian Literary Society. Reed, a University
graduate and Students for America activist, debated the
qualifications of Ronald Reagan and Wundale against Robert
Owen, a Democratic activist. There was no clear-cut winner
of the event, because it was unscured, said Lam
