You know, women get the shaft
sometimes
This weekend, due to financial limitations,
we were able to send only one staffer to
Lexington to cover the Georgia-Kentucky
game.
Because Kim Simon, who serves as our
photo editor and shoots most of the football
games, had relatives in the area, she
volunteered to both shoot and cover the
game
Do you know what it's like to shoot a game
by yourself? Photographers aren't allowed
between the 30s. so if they're by themselves
(hey have to race up and down the field,
following the flow of the game Usually, we
have two photographers, one at each end of
the field
So between racing up and down the field
and lugging 20 pounds of camera equipment
for three hours. Kim is also supposed to keep
up with what's happening on ttfr field. When
you're photographing a game, you're not
thinking about the score or keeping up with
what down it is, you're concentrating on
getting the best shots possible
What does Kim get for her trouble? A half
hourwait after the game for a two-minute
interview with a player dead tired from the
game and media hounding
After three hours of running around in 80-
90 degree heat. Kim Simon is denied en
trance to the Georgia locker room because
she is a woman
Now don't get me wrong I'm not ad
vocating that women should be allowed in the
men s locker room before, during or after the
game That’s not their place As a matter of
(act. it’s nobody's place but the team's
Unfortunately schools like Kentucky
haven't caught on to the growing importance
of media coverage to a sporting event
Fortunately. Georgia has
Bulldog players dress at the Coliseum and
then are bused to Sanford Stadium before a
game At the stadium, the player's "locker
room" is a large room with red carpet and
dressing stalls
With about 10 minutes remaining in the
game. Georgia Sports Information Director
Claude Felton comes around the press box
and compiles a list of players the media
requests to remain in the "locker room"
after the game When the game is over,
coach Dooley talks to the players, and then
the non-requested ones return to the
Coliseum to shower and be on their way The
coaches and requested players remain in
lhat “locker room" for post-game interviews
and comments Some keep their whole
uniforms on. while others remove their
••houlder pads, shoes and jerseys Usually
there's three or four female reporters, so
everything's o.k.
Maybe Georgia could join some pro teams
by making the process more enjoyable for all
involved Let the players shower before
they're available to the media, and have a

Diamond Dogs split
The Diamond Dogs split a
doubleheader with Dekalb
South Junior College
Saturday at Foley Field,
losing the first game 5-3 and
winning the second 2-1
The highlight of the
weekend,according to coach
Steve Webber, was Derrick
Lilliquist's pitching in the
second game
"He pitched an out
standing game,” Webber
said.
The freshman pitcher had
a no-hitter going for 5 1/3
innings He finished the
game with a two-hitter, with |
six strikeouts and two
walks
Webber's Dogs will take on
Dekalb North Junior College i
Thursday in the last game of
the fall season
Webber said that Dekalb
North is a strong team
"They were runner-up in j
state last year,” Webber j
said.
The doubleheader will be ff
at Foley Field.
The gymnasts are coming
United Slates Olympic gymnast Tim Daggett (above) will join women’s team member Kathy
Johnson in highlighting the annual Georgia Gymnastics Jamboree Nov. 30 at the Coliseum
Daggett lead the American upsel of China in Olympic competition this summer by hitting a
perfect 10 on the final event, the hori/nnlal bar, giving the gold to the United Slates. Daggett
also won a bronze medal in the individual pommel horse competition. Johnson, whose team
won the silver medal, also won a bronze in the individual balance beam competition.
separate interview room off the dressing
room
If you had just played and sweated and got
banged up for three hours in 90-degree heat,
would you want reporters swarming around
you so tightly that you sweat on their tape
recorders and note pads? And what about us
reporters? Do you think we enjoy getting
close to those 20 or so athletes desperately in
need of soap and deodorant’
The shower time would also give the
players a chance to cool off after the game It
would allow them time to get their thoughts
together and think about what they want to
tell the media
But what about Kim, who sacraficially
gave of herself only to be denied the rights
enjoyed by male reporters’ She'll continue
to fight the unecessary, uphill battle of
women sportwriters and I guess women in
general Why can't we just treat them like
everyone else?
Besides, who wants to see William Perry’s
in-need-of-bra chest anyway? If I had to
interview him after the game. I think I'd get
one of those long poles TV people use to get
as close as they can to President Reagan and
Mr Mondale At least Georgia is on the right
track
