Once again, according to
Vince Dooley Georgia
football team will be tested
as it never has before when
the Memphis State Tigers
invade Sanford Stadium on
Saturday However, this
time Dooley may not be far
from wrong
Memphis State has an
explosive offense that can
score from long distances
and an offensive line that is
reported to be the biggest
offensive line in the country
On defense, the Tigers are
ranked eighth in nation in
total defense and first in
passing defense In the
secondary, cornerbacks
Derrick Buroughs (6-1,
senior i and Donnie Elder <S-
», senlori are highly rated
and have four interceptions
between them
"There's no doubt
Memphis State is a quality
football team." Dooley said
“They have what is reported
to be the biggest offensive
line in the country and they
have some fine skill players
as well I'm sure they'll be
ready to play Georgia
"They have exceptional
personnel and talent What I
mean by talent is size and
speed ."
Dooley also said that the
Memphis state game could
have "national significance"
for Georgia which is ranked
eighth in the A P poll
“If we lose, we can forget
about anything national,”
said Dooley “Room at the
top is small and is being
limited to a certain number
of teams, but there is room
for us “
Dooley also stressed the
importance of not looking
ahead to playing Florida
"Historically, we have
played teams before we
played Florida and Auburn
that we could go out and play
badly against and win. If we
don't go out and play good
against Memphis State, we'll
lose If the team looks ahead
to Florida, they'll get beat
And if they're not smart
enough to know that and I'm
not smart enough to tell
them, then we deserve to get
beat."
Freshman tailback
Cleveland Gary and quar
tcrback Todd Williams
should return to practice
Tuesday, but Dooley was not
certain when they would be
able to play. As for Williams,
Dooley said that he is not
counting on him to play in
Saturday's game and that
his ability to return to top
form will be the basis on how
much and when he will play
Gary may see some action
Saturday Kim Stephens, a
freshman, will continue to
start a( center since Pete
Anderson's hand is still
hurting Anderson will start
a! guard
Dooley said that he is
concerned over the loss of
Jake Richardson on defense
but that Henry Harris, who
has shared playing time with
Richardson will start Bill
Mitchell returned to the
varsity after being demoted
to scout team but Steve
Boswell is number one right
now
Both Dooley and his
players compared the Tigers
to the South Carolina
Gamecocks, the only team to
defeat Georgia this year
“Scary thing to me is they
(Memphis State) look like
South Carolina on defense."
Anderson said. "I still have a
bitter taste in my mouth
from that game and I will for
a long time With a win
against Memphis State,
though, we have the op
portunity to be bigger than
conference champions. ”
McCluskry (43) said Georgia must be cautious about Memphis State
Outstanding ladies
NCAA single tennis champion Lisa Spain (left) and golf
champion Cindy Schrever (putting, right) have been selected
a* candidates for the I9H3-M Hroderick Sports Award for
outstanding women collegiate athletes. Schreyer is a senior
(teorgia golfer and a I9W All-American. She won the Lady
Seminole tournament and finished in the Top 10 at six others
last year including a second-place finish at the Southeastern
Conference championships after a sudden-death playoff for
the title. Spain was a three-time All-American at (Georgia and

her conference matches last spring.
Lady netters to visit Miami tourney
Cissy Donigan's women's tennis team
travels to Miami. Fla , thus weekend to
compete in the Miami Invitational, a
tournament Domgan said may play a
big part in assuring the Lady Dogs a
Top 20 spot in next spring's season
"It's very important for us to do well
in Miami,” Donigan said, “The
rankings come out after the tour
nament and that will give us a chance to
lie in the Top 20 if we beat some of the
top-ranked schools we play."
Georgia will be meeting some of the
tougher teams in the nation while at
Miami On Thursday, the Lady Dogs
play Clemson, ranked 15th nationally,
in the first round After Clemson. the
competition doesn't get any easier
On Friday. Georgia will play Rollins
College, another school ranked among
the nation's 20 best Following on
Saturday and Sunday, the Lady Dogs
take on Ole Miss and South Florida,
respectively Both of those schools are
also ranked in the Top 20
"The Miami tournament will reveal a
lot about where we stand as a team."
Domgan said “It will be a challenge "
The Miami tournament will be the
Lady Dogs' first action since this past
weekend, when Georgia traveled to
North Carolina to take on North
Carolina-Chapel Hill and Duke
Georgia's match against North
Carolina, which lasted six hours,
resulted in the Lady Dogs second loss of
the year, 2-7 Georgia had beaten the
1-ady Tar Heels earlier in the season
"When we played them three weeks
ago it was the same type match real
close three setters, and we had the
lucky edge the first time and won the
three matches,' Donigan said
"Saturday we didn't have that luck We
lost two three-setters in singles We just
didn't win the big points "
Individually for Georgia, Maxxine
Kaufman beat Carolina's Pam Farn
sworth 6-4. 6-3, and Jane Cohodes beat
Kiki Vaandrager 6-0. 6-0 for Georgia's
only two wins of that match
On Sunday the Lady Dogs beat Duke
6-3 to raise their season record to 3-2 In
the Duke match Donigan said she was
particularly happy with the play of No
1 seed I.ianna Bebeau
“I was pleased with how Lianna
played at No 1 She beat Duke's Lee
Shelbourne, w ho is ranked in the Top 30
nationally in singles Also, Alice Reen
and Maxxine Kaufman played well "
