Fire safety standards unmet, official says
By JENNIFER QUAY
Rf4 and Mark (tabor Heporter
Fire safety standards are
not being met on campus,
especially in Meigs and
Terrell halls. University
Fire Safety Officer Clint
Almond said Wednesday.
Meigs Hall has only one
exit from the second story, a
floor used for classes, while
the safety code requires two
exits Also, the code allows
only enclosed stairwells in
the building, but the one in
Meigs Hall is open, Almond
said
“Since they hold classes
up there, it would definitely
be better to have two
stairwells," Almond said
Terrell Hall has two exits
from the second floor, but

they both empty into the
main foyer, a situation that
could prevent people from
escaping in case of a fire on
the main floor, he added.
Almond said the code
states that the two required
exits “must be remote,” or
separate, not leading to the
same area
"I personally would rather
have another exit
somewhere in the building,”
he said.
Almond said that the
major problem with the two
buildings is that they were
built before the state had a
fire code, so they need to be
brought up to present
standards
"It is in the works,” he
said, and will be completed
“this fiscal year, as soon as
more funds are earmarked "
Almond said for the fiscal
year (July through June) of
1983-84, 23 fires were
reported on campus The
only major fire was in the
biology building and the
others were minor, such as
trash can or small chemical
fires, he said
This year there have been
seven fires reported on
campus, one of which was in
the Hoke Smith Annex and
caused more than 81 million
in damages, Almond said
Almond, who is the fire
marshal for 350 University
buildings all over the state,
said lab safety is another
concern.
Since the June fire in the

Building, which was caused

by mishandling of
chemicals, chemicals are
being handled better and fire
safety cabinets have been
purchased, Almond said
William M. Finnerty,
chairman of the
microbiology department,
said he recognizes the need
for fire prevention measures
and he's pushing the state
for money for them
He said he's still trying to
get money for cabinets to
store flammable chemicals
in, but the cabinets cost
about 8800 each.
Walter Wilson, assistant
director of the Cooperative
Extension Service, said he
has also become more
conscientious since a fire
broke out in July in the Hoke
Smith Annex, where his
offices were housed
The building had illegal
fire escapes at the time of
the fire because the escapes
were blocked by air con
ditioners
The fire insurance money,
Wilson said, will be used to
upgrade the electrical
system — which is blamed
for the July fire — and im
prove the stairwell.
“The idea is they want the
stairwell to be in the least

Wilson said
Almond agreed that
keeping the stairwells up to
fire code standards is the
biggest and most common
fire safety problem on
campus.
“That (the stairwell) is
your lifeline to getting out,"
he said.

Hope: Joke's not on activities fees
By KIM HAYS
M Md Black Seater Reporter
World-reknowned comedian Bob Hope may be making
jokes at someone's expense at 8 p m tonight in the Coliseum,
but his appearance won't be at the expense of University
students
“This is a promoted show No student activities fees were
used in preparation for Bob Hope’s appearance,” said Jarrell
Anthony, business manager for the University's Department
of Student Activities.
Anthony said the ticket prices of 85 for students and 810 for
non-students would pay for all expenses incurred by the
University Union.
“We’re not even dealing with Bob Hope and his
management We signed a contract with a promoter who in
turn signed a contract with Hope's management,” Anthony
said.
The American Collegiate Talent Showcase, a promotional
organization based at the University of New Mexico, travels
to college campuses nationwide to promote events such as
Hope's appearance tonight, Anthony said

University Union Program Advisor Candy Sherman said
"We've sold about 7,000 out of a 9.000 capacity.”
Sherman said she was surprised that the potential
audience for the Hope show as almost equally divided bet
ween students and non-students
“I was skeptical at first when the Showcase promoter
contacted me about Hope appearing here for homecoming.
Sherman said But she added that enthusiastic response to
Hope's appearance by members of the Union and the All
Campus Homecoming Committee changed her mind about
his potential drawing appeal
"He's just a tradition Everyone's grown up with him,
Sherman said
Sherman said the first half of the show will be per
formances by the talent search winners of the past two years
"Each of the (six) acts will have five minute to perform
and then there will be a 15 minute intermission," Sherman
said
Head football coach Vince Dooley and Universit\
President Fred Davison will probably escort Hope onto the
state around 9pm, Sherman said
