Whether it be a knock
down, drag out, scoreboard
explosion or a hard-hitting
defensive struggle, the
eighth-ranked Georgia
Bulldogs seem to have the
stuff it takes to win, as
evidenced by the Dogs’ 13-3
victory over pesky Memphis
State.
The victory was the kind
that Georgia followers have
come accustomed to through
the years, for the Dogs were
on the short end of every
statistic except the one left
on the scoreboard. In the
end, five turnovers
frustrated Memphis State,
three of them accounting for
Georgia scoring drives.
The first Tiger miscue
occurred in the first quarter
when quarterback Danny
Sparkman botched a han-
doff Bulldog cornerback
Tony Flack recovered at the

The Bulldog offense
responded with its longest
scoring drive of the af
ternoon, as it pounded 35
yards to the Memphis State
23 where Kevin Butler
booted a 40-yard field goal to
give Georgia a 3-0 lead
The Tigers took the kickoff
and immediately drove fo
the Georgia 34 on the
strength of two Sparkman
passes to Enis Jackson. A
Don Glosson field goal of 51
yards knotted the game 3-3.
After the teams traded
punts, Georgia found itself
on its 28 with a third-and-five
situation. Electing to sur
prise the Tigers, Georgia
tried to hit the long bomb
Fred fjine broke open on a
fly pattern down the sideline
but quarterback David
Dukes slightly overthrew
him The Dogs, however,
found thal the six points
would be academic.
On fourth down, punter
Chip Andrews boomed a
punt for 68 yards which
scooted out of bounds at the
MSU four-yard line with 4:02
left in the half.
After two dive plays by
Jeff Womack which ac
counted for four yards, the
Tigers tried a short
possession pass. Sparkman
bootlegged to his left and
fired a pass for tight end
Dwight Blalock, who had
broken open Cornerback
Kevin Harris lunged in front
of Blalock and came down
with the interception at the
Memphis 13.
“I could see the tight end
coming over with my
peripheral vision,” Harris
said. “1 just stepped in front
of him and took a chance. I
just felt it."
Rarely one to squander
opponent's mistakes,
Georgia capitalized. Dukes
capped a three-play drive
with a six-yard touchdown
scamper around right end
after freezing the Tigers'
linebackers with a fake.
Georgia went into the
lockerroom with a 10-3 lead.
The Bulldogs got them
selves into and out of trouble
via the tournover early in the
second half. On Georgia’s
first play from scrimmage,
Memphis State put itself in
business on Georgia's 32
with a Trell Hooper in
terception.
But, the Tigers gave the
ball right back at the 21 when
Steve Boswell recovered a
fumble by Womack.
Georgia again could not
move and proved itself of
fensively inept in the second
half as its net gains totaled
only 12 yards. Luckily for
Georgia, Andrews kept
Memphis State pinned in its
own territory with eight
punts averaging 50 yards.
"They had a good rush,”
Andrews said. "It had
something to do with making
me concentrate."

line, the Tigers mounted an
offensive drive taking the
ball 72 yards to the Georgia
15. That drive, like all of the
Tigers' best laid plans,
ended in disaster.
On second down, Georgia
linebacker Bill Mitchell
intercepted Sparkman and
returned the ball 22 yards to
the MSU 37. Again the Dogs
stalled.
"It got frustrating at
times,” Dukes said. "But
you can’t take it away from
those guys (Memphis State).
We didn't execute."
One more oeorgia
takeaway would secure the
victory The Dogs got it
when substitute quarterback
Page Belongy fumbled his
only snap of the game to
Kenneth Sims.

Memphis State's next two
desperation drives were
thwarted by quarterback
sacks by Calvin Ruff and the
game clock, which ran out
with MSU on the Georgia
three-yard line.
The victory vaulted
Georgia to 7-1. Memphis
State dropped to 5-3-1.
