“JB ” to join Tech *s Nerd Herd
My name ia Joe Bulldog
and my brother Billy and I
are real upael about this
probation thing the NCAA
slapped on Georgia's foot
ball program
That's because if you look
in the paper to see who else
is on probation, you see that
we're listed as being in the
same company with
Clemson and Florida
I don't think Boy George
singing "Glory to Ole
Georgia " would make me as
sick to my stomach
That's because, as
cheatin' goes, Clemson and
Florida are as about as
accomplished as Hank
Williams IS singing about it
We're just amateurs,
evidenced by the fact that
we're still eligible to be on
TV and go to bowl games,
not to mention win the
Southeastern Conference
championship
Of course. Clemson never
was able to win the SEC
because they ain't in it, but
their conference, the
Atlantic Coast, pul the skids
on the Tigers winning it and
taking that prestigious
Mystery Bowl bid for the
past couple of years And the
last lime you saw Danny
Ford and his Carolina Cats
on the tube live was when
Herschel shoved his broken
thump up the rear of their
fronts back in 1982
As for the Gators, I'll bet
dollars to doughnuts the SEC
strips them of their cham
pionship at the spring
Joe Bulldog
meetings in March faster
than Gypsy Rose Lee did her
clothes back in her prime
If they don't then there is
no justice Billy and I don't
want a bunch of crooks
representing our conference
as its champions The Gators
just don't have the class
Anyway, Georgia is on
probation, but It ain't
nowhere near the punish
ment meted out to other
teams We just got our wrists
slapped, and that's all there
is to it. Had we done
anything major, we'd be
sharing Cell Block C with our
buddies up 185 and those
Yankee beach bums j
What has riled Billy and
me the most about the whole
thing is that car that feller
bought Tyrone Sorrells
Billy says that stupid car
is going to kill our recruiting
"Everybody's going to tell
kids we're recruiting that
the only car they’ll gel if
they come to Georgia is an
old beat-up Oldsmobile!”
Billy said "People'll think
we're cheap!"
You have to understand
that Billy is a mite more
zealous than I am When the
Butler kicked that 60-yarder
to beat Clemson this year.
Billy wanted to buy him
Rhode Island Billy's heart is
in the right place, but then
again, so was that feller's
that bought Tyrone his car
Billy's also hacked off at
"The Georgia Tech Con
nection " Seems Tech people
have been giving him a hard
time lately about how clean
they are and how it was
about time we got caught
doing something wrong He
blames Bill Curry for us
getting caught and has
sworn revenge
He described his plan to
me.
"It's a murder-suicide
thing involving Curry and
Sorrells." he said
I like Billy's other plan
better It's a sure-fire, can’t-
fail plot to get Tech on
probation
"Here's what we do," he
explained "First, we send a
big donation to the- Nerd
Herd, or whatever Tech calls
its boaster club, so we
become classified as
"friends of the athletic
program.”
"Could you stand to do
that?" I asked
“Espionage is a dirty
business," he replied
grimly, then continued
explaining his plan
"Then, we send personal
checks to each member of
the football team and list
them as being for ‘touch
down in Citadel game,' or for
leading tackier in the
Virginia game.' ’
“And when one of them
cashes one. we GOT 'em I!”
“It wouldn’t work on
Clemson, though." he added,
"because I don't think the
NCAA would accept ‘X’s on
the backs of checks as
evidence"
Billy and me can't wait for
the investigator from the
NCAA to come calling
Momma's already put up
some of her cranberry
crunch.
Joe Bulldog is soon-to-be a
member in good standing of
The Nerd Herd

Blood.

Sixth-ranked Iowa
beats injured Dogs
By PATTY CROWE
Red and Black Sun Writer
The Georgia men's gymnastic team lost a close meet to
sixth-ranked Iowa January 10 in the Coliseum, 270.55 ta
282 40 The Dogs pulled to within four points of the Hawkeye*
after five events, but lost to a stronger team
“We just had a lot of breaks." Bulldog Head Coach Steve
Bonham said "We had some major breaks on high bar. antf
some major breaks from our top guys on parallel bars." -
Iowa proved to be the stronger team on all events,
especially floor, but Bonham had compliments for his team
"I wasn't that disappointed with our floor," Bonham said.
Bonham pointed out junior Tim Waggoner's floor routine iit
particular
"It was the best I've seen him on floor since his freshman
year." Bonham said "Tim's had problems with a broken;
wrist, but tonight he looked very good '
Bonham also praised Eric Patrick Patrick is showing:
excellent promise in his freshman year
"Patrick did a really nice job," Bonham said "He was
great on floor, great on pommel horse, great on vault He'
came through like I never thought he would "
Brian Allex also competed, coming back from a rotator
cuff tear
"Allex did a good job on floor." Bonham said "Basically.;
he saved <Kenny) Cook's ankle ”
Bonham's team is still plagued with injuries, mostly sore
ankles Cook is competing with a sore ankle and is unable to
vault or do floor, two of his best events Allex
possibly re-injured his shoulder during the Thursday night
meet John Hawkins is nursing a sore ankle and is unable to
complete double-backs on floor Robert House has bone chips
in his elbow bul is still competing, and Mark Parsons has had
trouble with a bad ankle But Bonham pointed out that
Parsons had a good meet anyway
"Parsoas was pretty much full speed." Bonham said "He
was excellent on floor, and he made his vault for the first
time " Parsons scored a 9 15 on his vault
Scott Price was also a stand-out against Iowa, scoring in
the low nine s on floor, rings, and high bar Bonham also said
that walk-on Jimmy Pirkle showed a lot of promise, despite a
fall on pommel horse
Commenting on the loss. Bonham said, "I think I was
hoping a little too hard In practice the guys have been
showing what they could really do. They were hoping they
could pull it together "
Bonham contributed the loss to breaks in routines, inex
perience, and injuries
"We had numerous breaks,” he said "We went 50/50,
which is bad in college gymnastics We weren't going all out.
and when you don't go all out in gymnastics, that's bad Also,
there was a lack of experience "
Bonham said the Bulldogs' injuries were a factor in the
lass
"Injuries definitely had a part in it." Bonham said
Iowa State head coach Tom Dunn had praise for the
Bulldogs
"They impress me," he said "I was trying to figure what
kind of score we’d be looking at from them I had them in the
280 range, but they came up with even more If they clean up
some areas, they'll be right up there "
Georgia's next meet is this weekend when the Bulldogs
travel lo Harrisburg. Va , to compete in the Shenandoah
Valley Invitational.
Georgia will be one of eight teams competing in the meet
The others include last year's champion. Pittsburgh. Navy.
Kent State. Massachusetts, North Carolina State. William
and Mary and host James Madison
