AROUND TOWN
40 Wall Club - Jan, lg ;
Kilkenny Cats. I must admit,
as is the case with many
other bands I enjoy. I've
nearly run out of
superlatives for the Cats 1
will continue to say this,
however, the Cats always
put out live Their shows
possess the raw energy that
a rock n' roll show is sup
posed to have, complete with
propulsive drums and a
crunching guitar The covers
ain't bad either
Waxing Poetics open Jan.
19: Del Fuegns. Raw roots
Boston I saw these fellows
up in Hoboken, N J . during
the Christmas break and
their show was one of the
highlights (along with my
getting my tapes and
sleeping bag ripped off bv a
Puerto Rican gang called the
Crime Five who deserve
impaling but hopefully will
get turned on to good music
in the processi Anyway, see
this bunch Nothing wrong
with straight ahead rock n'
roll Guitar, bass, drums and
gutsy vocals just as God
intended Jan. 21: Nighl-
porterv By recently adding
a saxophone for its Flipper
gig this past weekend, this
band has done itself well
The sax fills out the sound
Chester
Tommy Keene's 60s guitar-pop hits the Uptown
That's still no excuse for the
band's self-indulgence on-
strange li e taking forever
to play the songs with look
at-me poserdomi This is a
good band — maybe not as
good as it thinks — but
satisfying nonetheless Give
up the posing, fellows, you're
better than that Bar-B-«J
Killers opens Slashing,

Uptown Lounge — Jan. 18-
19: Rack of Spam. Won
derfully soulful covers Jan
21: Dark Harvest. Band
featuring many Athens
veterans including Paul
Lombard who fueled the
Little Tigers at its best
Lombard is a great throaty
singer who has a rock 'n' roll
passion about him and his
new band should be seen.
Jan. 23: Tommy Keene. It's
easy to pigeonhole guys like
Tommy Keene 60s wimpoid
guitar-pop with a healthy
nod to Alex Chilton. Yeah,
it’d be easy and it'd also be
wrong While this young D.C.
songwriter and band mine
the same area as fellow
Easterners the dB's and
Bongos, Keene more closely
resembles a strict student of
form such as Marshall
Crenshaw (crackling, trebly
guitars, tambourines,
handclaps, etc.). Like
Crenshaw, Keene also
avoids happy-go-stupid
cliches, instead addressing
sorrow and inadequacy with
a voice full of hope and
youthful resonance His 1984
EP "Places That Are Gone,”
on Durham. N.C's Dolphin
Records, is a fine sampler
(of course, including a
Chilton cover)
Mail Hatter — Jan. 18-19:
Sidewinder. Star Search
thought enough of these folks
to make them semi-finalists.
Don't really know what that
means because one of the
winners. Sam Harris, is a
geek See for yourself.
T K Harty's — Jan. 18-19:
David Wingo. Any relation to
the ex-New York Knicks
forward Hawthorne Wingo?
Didn't think so.

open Foot-stomping, butt-
gyrating rock ’n' roll. Fine
double bill Jan. 19: Love
Tractor. Recently returned
from a tour of America's
heartland, Tractor has
turned itself into quite a
touring band With good
reason, too They've never
sounded better. It's a wonder
what big guitars do for a
band Squalls open I think
by now everyone knows what
I think about the Squalls. I
love 'em A nice Athens
double bill that I wouldn't
mind seeing in Athens once.
Jan. 24: New Beggars. In
Pursuit opens
Metroplex — Jan. 18: The
Wake. S.T.D. opens Jan. 19:
The Knockabouts. Dead
Pigeons. G.N.P. opens.
Hardcore triple bill Jan. 21):
THE FAR SIDE
Black Oak Arkansas. This is
odd. The band that features
possibly the most primitive
human in southern rock
history, one Jim Dandy
Mangrum, hits the hardcore
circuit. These precursors to
Lynyrd and Hatchet once
even had a hit with "Jim
Dandy to the Rescue " Oh
well, maybe the suburban
skate punks will be bored
enough to do some hot and
nasty slamming Jan. 24: A-

MOVIES IN TOWN

BLOOM COUNTY
by Berke Breatned
"Oh. wow' How could you even fh/nk that, Wendy?
Of course It's your mind I'm attracted tot"
"Wicked Ways."
Georgia Square —-
“Passage to India." This is
supposed to be the best film
of last year. 1 don't know for
sure because when I tried to
see it in Atlanta it was sold
out "2010: A Space Oddity."
Thanks, Bowie. "Micki and
Maude." A trite waste of
lime. "Terminator.”
"Protocol.” Despite a
screenplay that was written
v Buck Henry, the story
gets bogged down in sappy
Americanism. "Dune"
Sting in tight leather, but
Beth says there wasn't
enough of him In tight
leather, I guess "Cotton
Club.” "Johnny
Dangerously " The concept
of pricing puppies is great,
but one good joke every
fifteen minutes isn't enough
"Starman." Definitely
worth seeing Midnight:
"Rocky Horror Picture
Show ' “This isSpinalTap."
“Airplane.” "Bachelor
Party." "A Clockwork
Orange." •
Palace — "City Heat.”
Burt and Clint, but they're
laughable "Beverly Hills
Cop." Eddie Murphy being
twice as funny as he was in
"48 Hours," because he's on
screen twice as much
Classic — "The River."
It's got Mel Gibson, and Beth
says it doesn't matter what
he does because he's so cute.
"Breakin’ 2.” Sure,
"Breakin"' was a classic,
and it racked up a lot of
Oscar nominations, but I just
don’t know if a sequel can
live up to it "That's Dan
cin’." Gene Kelley hosting
two hours of classic dancing
clips
Georgia Theater —
"Purple Rain " Would
Prince really die 4 me, and if
so when can we call him?
OK, maybe not, but would he
at least not star in bad films
4 me?
Athens Drive-In — "Street
Love " Wow this sounds hot.
Forget Bunel
MOVIES ON CAMPUS
Tate Center — Jan. 18-19:
“The Bounty." Mel Gibson
with his shirt off Even soil's
dreadfully boring Midnight:
“Life of Brian." Monty
Python at its best Jan. 20:
Burnel’i "Diary of a
Chambermaid.” Sounds like
it should play at the drive-in.
Jan. 21-22: "The Wild
Bunch " Sam Peckinpah at
his violent best. Jan. 23:
"The Big Sleep.” Howard
Hawks classic starring
Bogie and Bacall. Don’t miss
Ibis Phillip Marlowe drama,
it's one of the best of the
quarter. Jan. 24: "Lianna.”
John Sayles’ lesbian movie.
It’s supposed to be better
than "Secaucus Seven" but
worse than "Brother From
Another Planet "
THE LAST PART
It s amazing I’ve finally
transcended boredom and
prompted a reader to write a
letter One W 8. Boozer from
the J Fred Muggs School of
Undecided Majorism sent :<
scathing letter wondering
why Joe abused "Bachelor
Party." Mr Boozer called it
"one of the most important
films of 1984" and “lender
and humorous." Don't know
if your longue is still in your
cheek. Boozer, hut thanks
for the letter It's people like
you who cause unrest and
make my job a teeny bit
