Dogs to meet
tough Tigers
By GREG GUEST

The road to the Southeastern Conference tiUe continues
Saturday when the Georgia Bulldogs face the Auburn Tigers
at the Coliseum
The Bulldogs (10-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference), are
coming into Saturday's game after a big 71-60 win over
Florida Wednesday night in Gainesville. Fla
The Tigers are also 10-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference,
but are coming off a tough loss W’endesdav night to intrastate
rival Alabama
Auburn is led by junior forward Chuck Person, who led his
team in scoring, free throw percentage, and steals last
season This season Person is averaging 22 3 points per game
and is a leading candidate for All-America honors
"Chuck Person is one of the big keys He is the team
leader," Georgia Head Coach Hugh Durham said
This year, however. Auburn comes to the Coliseum without
its big gun, Charles Barkley The All American Barkley led
the Tigers' inside attack and defense last season as well as
scoring 15.1 points per game
The loss of Barkley was a definite minus to Auburn
basketball However, returns Frank Ford and Gerald White
as well as freshmen Chris Morris and Jeff Moore has given
the Tigers the talent needed to make up <or the loss of several
key starters from last year
"They've got a lot of talent," Durham said "They are still
strong inside ”
Moore, at 6-7, is the main reason for Durham's wariness of
Auburn Moore, playing at center, has come on to take the
middle spot from Carey Holland in addition to averaging 9.5
points per game
Georgia, though, must be viewed as a team which has
vastly improved and grown in the series of one month
With the addition of freshman sensation Cedric Henderson,
the Bulldogs have "the big man downtown" to give them
rebounding power That, along with the consistent scoring of
Joe Ward and Horace McMillan, were the big factors in
Georgia's key victory over the Gators Wednesday night
In that game. McMillan led all Bulldog scorers with 16
points while Ward tossed in 13.
"We were pleased," Durham said "We played a consistent
game offensively and defensively ''
No doubt the second conference win feels good to the Dogs,
but Saturday is another business day
Georgia will most likely concentrate on defense, the
particular area in which they excelled against Florida,
Durham said.
"If we continue to improve we've got a chance to be a good
team The biggest factor of our win over Florida was
defense," Durham said.

The Georgia men's gymnastics team will
travel to Harrisburg. Va., today for the
Shenandoah Valley Invitational, meeting
seven other schools in the two-day com
petition Georgia will be competing against
Pittsburgh. Navy, Kent State, the University
of Massachusetts, William and Mary, North
Carolina State, and host team James
Madison
Bulldog Head Coach Steve Bonham said he
would really like to win this meet
"We're going back with a kind of chip on
our shoulder," Bonham said, “We were
winning this meet last vear after four events.
Then we had one guy really mess up badlv on
high bar We took a 04 for that routine, and
ended up lasing to Pitt and Navy So we’re
looking forward to going back and not suf
fering that type of break again.”
Bonham is traveling with eight men to
Virginia, leaving Mark Ewers and Brian
Allex behind. Ewers is academically
ineligible, and Allex is on the injury list
again Bonham said he was hoping to red-
shirt Allex Meanwhile, Kenny Cook will
compete in Allex’s place. Cook will compete
on pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and
high bar, and is an alternate on floor and
vault
"We can compete six men on each event
with the top five scores counting, so we’ll put
him < Kenny) in on floor and vault if we need
him,” Bonham said.
John Hawkins is coming back strong after
an ankle injury, and will be competing in the
all-around, while Jimmy Pirkle will compete
on the pommel horse and high bar.
Bonham said the Georgia men will be
facing some strong competition this
weekend.
"Pitt had a 220 in a meet against Japan,
with only four scores counting in each
event," Bonham said. "That’s a very good
score for only four men. They're going to be a
good challenge, and Navy is always
respectable.”
Preliminary competition begins tonight.
The top six individuals will advance to the
finals on Saturday night, with no more than
two individuals from each team qualifying.
Bonham said he is optimistic about the
finals
“We're hoping to have two of our guys on
each event in the finals," Bonham said
