Marino-led Dolphins will prevail by five
The Dean of Prognostication 'being Dean Looney, Sports
Editor o( this fair publication i say* the 49er'» by three this
Sunday evening in what, by looking at the matchup alone,
could and should be the greatest Super How l ever Of course,
that's what they said about the Raiders-Kedskins matchup
last January, which, if you remember correctly, was about
as exciting as watching paint dry
The Dean bases this guess on the fact that he was good
enough to finish first in our “Out on a Limb" column, in
which he and I and five other aspiring sports experts tried
our luck In picking 15 college games a week Well. Mr
Looney, we're in the big leagues now As John Madden might
say, this is the rock 'em sock 'em. get-down-in-the-mud,
sweat and blood world of professional football
In an informal poll of Bed and Black staffers, the outcome
was deadlocked at eight Of course, half the newsroom staff
didn't know who was playing, while the female members
picked Miami because "ban Marino has the prettiest blue
eyes " Some chicks are like that, but not my girlfriend No
way This chick's got class While those females around her
were floundering over Marino's curly locks, she hung in there
and picked the 49er's by six After all. she reasoned, Joe
Montana's much better looking than Marino
Oh. curse the day that “Pretty Boy Floyds" like Marino
and Montana started showing up in helmets and shoulder
pads to riddle opposing defenses with their pin point passes
Whatever happened to the good ole days when real he-men
like Billy Kilmer and Kenny Stabler ruled the griuiron. Those
guys were ugly as sin Kilmer, with his one-bar face mask
and tialding head looked like a neglected Cabbage Patch Doll
while Stabler, fondly nicknamed "the Snake" looked like
Hell's Angels' reject You didn't see women slobbering all
over these guys like they were some GQ pin-up
But I II accept the cruel turn of fate, as if I have a choice,
and will be looking on from my fireside armchair Sunday
evening as those "two handsome hunks" battle it out for the
Champioashipof the entire civilized world.

‘Whatever happened to the good

The Dolphins are the pick by five in my book. Not because
Marino's better looking, mind you. but because the guy's not
human He’s immortal. The best the 49er’s can hope to do is
slow him down, because short of a disabling late hit or a
pregame freak injury, the man cannot be stopped
Maybe during the regular season he could be beaten, but
the playoffs have proven to be nothing short of a playground
for the man from Pittsburgh Just ask the Steelers, who no
doubt wish they could have their hometown boy back
Two weeks ago. in the AFC Championship Game in
Miami's Orange Bowl, Pittsburgh thought they finally had
Marino’s number At the two minute warning before the half,
they were ahead and had actually held the Dolphins offensive
unit below double figures But oh what a difference a minute
makes with the mighty Marino at the helm Fifty-four
seconds later the outclassed Steelers came to the conclusion
which the 49er's will reluctantly draw in Palo Alto. Calif . two
days from now The man is unstoppable In less than a
minute, Marino led his charges to three touchdowns Okay,
so one was called back, but the undaunted Marino came back
and scored anyway Otherwise, the Dolphins would have
scored twice in 40 seconds
Granted, the 49er s field a much more formidable foe
defensively than did Pittsburgh The Steelers had to
recommission the old warrior, Jack Lambert, in order to
field 11 guys on defense The 49er’s. on the other hand, draw
straws to decide which 11 to send in. San Francisco has so
many able-bodied defensive personnel that no one person has
a chance to work up a sweat before he is replaced by an
equally efficient head hunter
This fact has Don Shuia considering running a two-minute
offense for the better part of the game, thus effectively-
countering the 49er's mass influx of substitutes What a
sobering thought If Marino led his team to three touchdowns
in less than a minute with a huddle, how many TD's could he
squeeze into a minute without a huddle’’
The best the 4!!er's can hope for is to outscore the Dolphins,
which is a distinct possibility when one considers that the
Killer Bee defense of old has, of late, lost its sting. This,
combined with Bill Walsh's unpredictable offensive circus,
which two weeks ago included a split end at quarterback and
a tackle at fullback, could make this one of the more en
tertaining. if not the highest scoring. Super Bowls of all time
So buckle down all you armchair quarterbacks Still those
throbbing hearts, ladies Super Bowl Sunday is on the
horizon, and it's gonna tie a good one

"One thing about this meet, we ll definitely

facing in the Southeastern Conference
championships.''
The men's team is going to be in for one of

members of the men's squad to be declared
academically ineligible for the 1965 indoor
track season Also declared ineligible are
senior distance runner Sean Nicholl and
speedster Norman Edwards
In addition, highly regarded freshman
high jumper Gary Duncan is recovering
from arthroscopic surgery and is not ex
peeled to compete this season
"With the injuries and athletes lost to
ineligibility, we are probably rated in the
lower half of the conference." Gainey said
“Prior to this I think we could have been In
the upper half"
The Eastman Invitational will also provide
the Georgia coaches a chance to see how
several Bulldog newcomers will perform in
their first collegiate competition
Athens native IJothel Edwards, the No 1
high school high jumper in the nation last
year, will be making his college debut along
with freshman distance runners Jeff Coates
and John Stein
"Edwards has been working hard this
year," Gainey said. "We've been con
centrating on his strength and conditioning
since, unlike his high school meets, he'll be
having to jump his maximum every week ”
"Slein is looking real good in practice," he
added "I think he's getting adjusted to
school and his competition in cross country
this year will benefit him in the two-mile
run "
One of the key performers Gainey said he
will welcome back is junior long jumper
Lester Benjamin Benjamin, who anchored
Georgia's NCAA Champion 400-meter relay
team last spring, was runner-up in the NCAA
Indoor Championship's long jump last
winter This will be his first competition
since he represented his native country of
Antigua in the 1984 Summer Olympic games
in Los Angeles
Senior middle distance runner Steve
Burgess is another performer to watch.
Burgess won the conference championship in
the 800-yard run at Baton Rouge last season
and will run the same event at Johnson City
He may also compete in the mile relay
Georgia women's head coach Mike Sheley,
beginning his first season with the Lady
Dogs, will also be trying to find out w here his
team stands
"We are anxious to get started." Sheley
said “We really won’t know what to expect
in this first meet, but we’ve got a lot of people
we want to take a look at "

Torrence, the NCAA indoor All-American in

Gainey sees the 1985 indoor season as a
challenge that will require a lot of work, and
a little luck, to remain competitive in the
SEC
"We'll have to have everything go right for
us," Gainey said “But our team has a lot of
C ide and they'll group together and work
rd to overcome our difficulties We'll just
have to lake the meets one at a time ”
