The army in El Salvador has a very special characteristic
because it plays the role not of defending the country against
external forces, but of suppressing the people's uprising
against the military dictatorship, said El Salvadoran left-
wing opposition member Sonia Biros
Biros spoke Sunday to the members of the Athens Com
mittee on Latin America on the general political, economic
and social conditions in El Salvador
"El Salvador is ruled by military dictatorship which
protects the interests of the people As a result, the people in
this country do not enjoy the freedom of speech and ex
pression,” she said
“Anyone who asks for freedom to write or speak is called
communist and freedom is a very loosely-viewed term,” she
added.
Biros, who gave the lecture sponsored by the Athens
Committee on Latin America, is an active member and
representative of the FDR party in El Salvador, which op
poses the government of Jose Napoleon Duarte.
Biros explained that "the opposition forces in El Salvador
Psychologists offer help for shyness

Anyone who has ever had
that sweaty-palmed. hot-
and-cold, crawl-in a hole
feeling, knows that shyness
is not just a figment of the
imagination or an attitude
problem It can be very real
Jack Jenkins, an associate
professor of psychology at
the University's Psychology-
clinic, defines shyness as a
lack of social skills in
specific situations
“A shy person does not
know how to do the right
thing at the right time in par
ticular situations," he said.
"It is hard to characterize
a person as shy," Jenkins
said. He said many people
say they are shy but after
clinicians study them, they
are not judged to be so
Jenkins said people are
shy for different reasons
Some people use shyness to
manipulate others "They
get everyone else to do
things for them," he said
Jenkins said shy girls may
be considered coy. which
society deems attractive at
times But society docs not
condone such behavior in
men
"Being very shy is
especially hard on a guy,
because society expects him
to be more assertive.”
Many very shy people
never get the help they need
“They talk themselves out of
it because they feel inade
quate," Jenkins said. “Only
when problems reach a
threshold, do they come to
get help ”
Jenkins said he based his
theories on the literature on
social skills training He has
studies and practiced
behavior modification
theory
Jenkins said he recom
mended the psychology
clinic to help people deal
with their shyness Each
person's difficulties are ex
amined and dealt with on an
individual basis He said the
psychologist and patient
work together as a team to
solve the problems
“I try to keep counseling

said. He said the shy person
learns social skills through
roleplaying and emulating
his psychologists They even
have homework
assignments, he said
Bob Bretscher. a counsel
ing psychologist at the
University’s Gilbert Health
Center, said he had a dif
ferent theory. He said,
"Shyness is a temporary
thing that serves a purpose
A person will not be shy if it
will hurt themself ."
Bretschen said a person
can only hurt themselves by
being shy if they are unskill
ed in how they use their
shyness
“Shyness is an intraper
sonal feeling that relates to a
temporary feeling of un
worthiness and vulnerabili
ty." Bretscher said. The
physiological responses
that accompany it are
similar to the ones that
signify stress, he said.
Betscher said shyness is
inhibits other feelings He
said, "Shyness is a close
cousin to guilt or conscience,
but it is easier to live with."
“Shyness may be very ap
preciate,” Bretscher said.
“If shyness works for you, it
is not a bad thing," he said.
Confident people may use
shyness to suit their pur
poses, but if it becomes a
habit, it might get in their
way, Brestcher said.
Shyness can be a way to
step back and figure things
out "It may even occur
without conscious control,"
he said.
If shyness is a problem,
you can improve other skills
to help combat it, Bretscher
said. He said he recom
mends practicing the situa
tion in which one has pro
blems, and then reflecting on
alternate ways of dealing
with the situation.
Also, a person can talk to
his friends and see how they
would handle such a situa
tion, Bretscher said
Together they can solve the
"I don't know what to say"
problem
have never been allowed to take the government The op
position tried to participate in the elections in 1982 but there
was no scope to win, since there are no conditions for the
opposition to participate in the elections. Even in 1972, efforts
made by the opposition to participate in the elections failed."
Although the country has witnessed the "people’s
uprising" against the government since 1932, none of the
efforts have succeeded, Birus said
Explaining the reason why people have been fighting for
change in El Salvador, Birus said that the economic and
social conditions have not been conducive to change and
probably never will.
The grim conditions in El Salvador also account for the
reason why people leave the country, she said.
"There are 500,000 refugees from El Salvador in the U.S.,
but the Reagan administration does not give legal status to
refugees," Biros said.
“The U.S. supplied $2 billion as economic aid to El
Salvador, but most of it is used for military purposes. Even
the economic measures that the government carries out are
not beneficial to the majority of the people in El Salvador,"
she said.
Giving an account of the contemporary economic and
cultural scene, Biros mentioned that in El'Salvador today,
there is no original culture.
"Culture is mostly imported and imposed on the people.
Because of this imposed culture we have lost our own
culture," she said.
The economic conditions in the country are bleak, with
unemployment amounting to 40 percent and the per capital
income per year being $600
