Harris, Waites dominate;
Lady Gators fail, 67-56

After he law hi* Lady Dogs come back
from a five-point deficit in the second half to
outwore Florida 15-4 and go on to win G7-56
on Saturday afternoon. Georgia Head Coach
Andy Landers seemed disappointed with his
teams lackadaisical play.
With the Georgia women shooting a dismal
29 percent from the field in the first half,
Landers had every right to be upset The only
thing that kept the l.ady Dogs in the running
against the Lady Gators and its strong front
line wa* its 70 percent shooting from the
charity stripe With that performance, the
Georgia women managed a 26 26 tie at
halftime
The Lady Dogs improved its shooting
percentage to 66 percent in the second half as
Janet Harris and Traci Waites led a com
eback with seven minutes remaining Harris
tossed in 12 of her game-high 20 point* in the
last half, while Waites contributed 9 of her 13
points in the final half
The last five minutes of the half might
have well have been dubbed the "Waites and
Harris" show with 13 of the last 15 Georgia
point* coming from the pair With 2:54 left.
Waites stole the ball at the Florida end and
drove the length of the floor Instead of tak
ing the shot herself, Waites ripped a behind-
ttw back pass to Harris who returned the
favor with a pass back to her teammate
Waites layed the ball in and was fouled by
Florida's Tammy Jackson The crowd of
4.221 went nuts with unbelief at the above-
mentioned display of talent
Landers said that the (siting against
Florida was probably the team's poorest per
formance in the last 15 games
“I was very disappointed with our play."
he said "We played very nonchalant It was
probably the poorest that we've played
physically in 15 games Nobody on the team
was into what we had to do to win. With this
kind of performance, our unbeaten streak in
the SEC won’t last long "
Landers also pointed to a lack of intensity
but was quick to take part of the blame
"We've forgot how to win easy because we
don't play hard." he said "Our intensity has
fallen off. and I have to accept some respon
sibility for that If I knew what caused it and
how to cure it, I would "
With the win. Georgia improved to 17-2 and
now faces five SEC opponents in its last
seven games
Last Thursday, the Lady Dogs traveled to
Statesboro without the services of
sophomore center Katrina McClain after she
suffered a severe gash on her right elbow in a
collision with Harris during Wednesday's
practice.
Georgia won 86-59 despite McClain's
absense Junior forward Lisa O'Connor took
up the slack and tossed in a game high 21
points
The Lady Dogs posted its 18th win of the
season on Monday night as it defeated

If the Georgia women *
gy/nnastics team held its
awards banquet tonight,
some of the winners would
be tough to predict The
MVP could go to any of four
gymnasts and the Mast
Improved Award has some
heavy competition, too
However, the Sleeper of the
Year award might easily
land In the hands of fresh
man Michelle Sessions
Sessions, an Annapolis.
Md , native, looked to be the
fourth or fifth position on the
'85 squad, behind the talents
of Julie Klick, Terri Eckert.
Gina Banales and Susie
Origer She arrived at
Georgia for pre-season
workouts with a chronic
ankle injury and had missed
her entire senior year of high
school competition Georgia
Coach Suzanne Yoculan
even benched her from the
opening meet with Alabama
to rest her ankles
Despite these setbacks.
Sessions has emerged from
the pack in the Lady Dogs’
two most recent meets to
puce the team with excellent
performance* on the balance
beam and all-around
competition
In the Lady Dogs’ win over
Missouri. Sessions set , new
school balance beam record
with a 9 65 She narrowly
missed capturing the all
around title, finishing second
behind Klick by 05 points.
This past weekend.
Sessions again sparked a
Georgia win. as the Lady
Dogs defeated Nebraska and
Oklahoma State Sessions
captured her first collegiate
all-around title with a 36 60
score
Although Yoculan said
that her team dominated the
meet, she said that she was
disappointed with the low
score of 178 15 Nebraska
finished second scoring
174.80 and Oklahoma State
placed third with a 172.90
score
However, the Lady Dogs
did well in the individual
events, as Sessions con
tinued to perform well on the
balance beam, scoring a 9 2
for the win Sessions also
scored a 9 45 on the uneven
bars to take first place in
that event.
Klick had another out
standing floor routine and
scored a 9 45 to win that
event Although Eckert had
two falls on the beam, an
event that has bothered her
throughout the year, she did
score high enough to finish
behind Sessions in the all-
around with a 36.20 score.
"It's just a matter of time
before Terri captures her
first all-around title of the
year," Yoculan said
Yoculan said that her
eighth-ranked Lady Dogs
are improving daily, and
should be considered a
contender for the national ti
tle by season's end
"We have posted some of
the highest scores of any
team in the country this
year," Yoculan said "We
definitely are getting
stronger with every meet.”

The Georgia men's and women's indoor
track teams traveled to Johnson City, Tenn
last weekend to compete in the Eastman In
vitational Both teams were less than im
pressive with only four performers from the
men's squad placing and only five placing for
the Lady Dogs
The Lady Dogs did, however, fare a little
better than the men. getting first and second
place finishes from sisters Sabina and Lian
nea Horne in the mile run Sabina, coming off
an injury that prevented her from competing
during last fall's cross country season, got a
first place finish with a time of 5:15 0 Lianne
finished only a half second later to get the se
cond place spot
Sophomore sprinter Gwen Torrence, a 1964
Indoor All-American and SEC Champion in
the 60-yard dash, also did well in the
sprinter's event She finished second with a
6 85 and was closely followed by teammate
Sandra Smith who finished fourth with a 6 92
Freshmen shot putter Jill Palmer made a
favorable collegiate debut by hurling a 48 1
for a third place finish
The men's team found out that it will have
to work hard to improve if it hopes to be com
petitive in the Southeastern Conference The
Dogs could manage no higher than a third
place finish from any athlete
One highlight may have been the per
formance of highly touted freshman Dothel of the season
Edwards Edwards, a native of Athens and
the No 1 high school high jumper in the na
tion test year, placed third in the high jump,
clearing 7-2. . _ .
Although Head Coach Lewis Gainey was
pleased with Edwards' jump, he is sure the
high jumper could do better
Dothel had a good jump at 7-2 but not at
7_4 " Gainey said. "It was his first time to ,
jump off of astroturf and that can make a lot
of dif ference to a f reshma n
Other third place finishes came from Steve
Burgess in the 880-yard run at 1:53.0, and
junior Lester Benjamin's 24-11 in the long
jump.
"We've definitely got a long way to go,
Gainey said "We looked rusty in our first
meet But I don't think that it was an in
dication of what we could do We had a lot of
young people in a situation they weren't used
'" ‘We didn’t feel like we were as prepared
for the meet as we could have been." Gainey
continued “The cold weather has prevented
us from doing some things we wanted to.”
Both Georgia teams will get a chance to
improve Friday when they travel to Clemson
to take on the Atlantic Coast Conference
Tigers The meet won’t be scored, as the
facility at Clemson is new and will be com
peted on for the first time this weekend Both
teams will be looking to record times fast
enough to qualify for the NCAA’s at the end
Swimmers, gymnasts triumph
The Georgia women's
swim team and the men's
gymnastics squad both had a
successful weekend of
competition, with the Lady
Dogs defeating the Ten
nessee Lady Volunteers in
Knoxville and the men winn
ing the Shenandoah Valley
Invitational in Harrison
burg. Va.
Head Coach Jack
Bauerle's Lady Dog
swimmers gained their sixth
victory of the season with
Saturday's 79-61 win over
Tennessee Linda Leith,
Megan Bresnahan and
Margarita Caberra turned
out top performances for the
team
The women swimmers will
be off until February 1. when
they host Miami at
Stegeman pool
The men gymnasts
defeated six other teams
during the weekend to win
the Shenandoah Valley
Invitational meet Georgia's
winning score was 265 85, its
best team score this season
Pittsburgh finished second
at 264 6
The Bulldogs next com
