Students seeking to sup
plement their University
education with international
overtones will find an ample
supply of resources here on
campus, namely in the
Center for Global Policy
Studies
Training for international
careers began at the
University 50 years ago and
now is available through
every college, school and
department on campus,
CGPS Director William
Chittick said
"One of the units most
concerned with the
development of international
curricula is the center for
Global Policy Studies,"
Chittick said
This center, which works
closely with the Rusk
Center, administers cer
tificate programs designed
to prepare students for a
growing number of in
ternational careers in
government, industry and
non government organizat
ions
CGPS, created in 1980, is
headed by Martin J.
Hillenbrand, the Univer
sity’s Dean Rusk professor
of International Relations
"We're still feeling our
way,” he said "We don't
want to get indigestion from
too-rapid expansion ”
The Certificate in Global
Studies, which may be
earned at the graduate or
undergraduate level
"represents a coherent
program the student has
taken in order to be better
equipped for a certain job,"
Hillenbrand said
With a business degree, for
example, the certificate is a
double asset when applying
with an international firm,
he said
"What businesses are
looking for is students who
have a certain competency "
The Undergraduate
Certificate in Global Studies
is designed to offer an in
ternational perspective, to
facilitate the ability to

Service Projects, a Communiversity
program which just celebrated its first
birthday, is going strong, providing
needed services to elderly, poor and
handicapped members of the Athens
community.
“This is a vital program to the
community, it really helps those who
can't help themselves," said the former
director Jim Collins
The program, which began in the
spring of 1984, has regular jobs in
cluding weatherizing homes, clearing
yards and painting, said Director Gary
Bishop
The program also provides volun
teers to help the Special Olympics to
work with retarded children and the
annual Thanksgiving Care Drive,
collecting and distributing food, toys
and clothes
Collins said "the Care Drive was a
particular success due to sorority and
fraternity participation."
"The Mad Hatter and Georgia Square
Mall provided gifts as an incentive to
the Greeks that collected the mosl
goods." Bishop said "This type of
community participation is what the
program's really all about."
The idea for the program originated
through a group of Communiversity
leaders “The idea for the program
cannot be attributed to one person; we
all came up with the idea together."
Collins said
The program consists of about 20
volunteers who do the work without any
credit. “I do it because I know I'm
helping people who can’t help them
selves, and I feel good knowing I've
helped someone," Bishop said
The program is unique in that it in
volves no time commitment "This is
strictly a program where there is no
long-term commitment We can use
voluteersatany time, " Bishop said
The program is provided funds from
Communiversity through the
University However, this may
sometimes not be enough so they "use
tools, clothes and food to aid our
program," Collins said

Fashion merchandising
not all glamour and glitter

Officials in the University's College of Home Economics
say a career in fashion merchandising isn’t the easy and
glamorous job many people think it is
“A career in this field requires a lot of hard work and time,
both during college and on the job,” said Sandra Forsythe, an
assistant professor in the college
Fashion merchandising major Amy Ackerman said during
college each student must take a wide variety of classes,
including chemistry, accounting and textile science to
receive a BSHE degree
"It's hard work,” Ackerman said. "Also, there is a high
turnover in this field, and in order to be successful and ad
vance rapidly, an employee must be willing to be mobile for
the first several years ."
There are three mam areas lor specialization for students
majoring in fashion merchandising retailing, management
and buying Many graduates also enroll in executive training
programs at major department stores such as Neiman-
Marcus or Davison's
Forsythe said personnel officers from such companies are
searching for students with good written and oral com
munication skills, basic math skills and superior analytical
ability, strong decision making capabilities and good
management skills
Forsythe said fashion merchandising majors are sp-
couraged lo intern during college Internships are con
sidered to be an excellent opportunity for students to gai|
valuable work experience and make contacts.
Internships are offered fall quarter only and are pafl
according to the discretion of the company The student
works full lime for 10 weeks and receives 15 hours credjl
toward option courses in the home economics department
During the internship, a student must write one major paper
defining the company he is working for and two minor papers
which can be over a variety of topics
There are currently about 300 students enrolled in this
program, and the demand for these students is quite high
According to a College Placement Council surves
the average national starting salary for merchandising retail
wholesale is about $17,000 a year
