Braves oppose drug test proposal
ATLANTA (AP> - Baseball Com
mission Peter Ueberroth’s proposal for
mandatory drug testing of all baseball
personnel is not winning much support
from the Atlanta Braves' players
"He’ll never get it." said team
captain Bob Horner
"The guys who are on drugs in this
league are obvious." Horner said "If
clubs paid close attention to how a guy
is playing or acting, they'd spot ’em too
You’re talking about 50 guys, while 600
3 are clean That's not justification for
• testing."
- Ueberroth's plan. announced
Tuesday, would require drug testing of
owners, front office personnel,
managers, coaches, scouts and more
than 3,000 minor league players
Mandatory drug tests for major
league players are prohibited by the
players’ contract with the owners, but
Ueberroth said he will ask the players’
union to approve the mandatory drug
tests for players as well
“My grossly inadequate know ledge of
the situtation tells me there would be
some legal ramifications if the com
missioner ever tru'd to push it on the
players." said Bruce Benedict, the
Braves’ player representative
Dale Murphy, the two-time National
League most valuable player, said
Ueberroth’s plan is like "assuming a
guy is guilty without knowing. It’s
making somebody prove their in
nocence without knowing he’s guilty ”
Several Braves said they believe the
drug agreement negotiated with the
owners last summer is adequate to
solve any problem.
"The clubs have a right, if they detect
a problem, to take a player before three
experts They are protected by this
agreement,” said first baseman Chris
Chambliss. "They haven’t even given it
a chance to work If they see a player
performing poorly or acting strangely,
they can do something about it "

Fleming sued by agency
for reneging on agreement
From Wire Reports
As if the 27 allegations of NCAA rule
violations against Georgia's basketball
program were not enough, yet another
potential violation was learned Wed
nesday.
According to a report by the
Associated Press, former Bulldog All-
American Vern Fleming may have
signed an agreement with a sports
agency prior to his junior year at
Georgia.
Walt Frazier Sports Enterprises Inc
of Atlanta has filed a lawsuit against
Fleming, who plays for the Indiana
Pacers of the NBA The suit claims that
the Georgia player reneged on an
agreement to be represented by the
agency.
NCAA rules forbid players from
signing any type of an agreement with
an agency or agent while they are
playing intercollegiate sports
Georgia head coach Hugh Durham
said he had not been questioned by the
NCAA about the agency’s claim, and he
refused comment on the situation
The agency is seeking 7 percent of
Fleming's current salary plus $2,600 it
Says was given to Fleming for his own
personal use while he was playing for
Georgia.
According to Frazier, a standout
guard on two New York Knicks NBA
championship teams and chairman of
the agency, Fleming signed an
agreement around July of 1982, just
before his junior year at Georgia.
The NCAA is expected to announce its
findings sometime this month regar
ding the investigation into the Bulldog
basketball program
Georgia completed its own internal
investigation of its basketball program
and presented its findings to the NCAA
infractions committee April 28
Most of the charges center around
freshman Cedric Henderson, who led
the Bulldogs this past season in scoring
and rebounding.
Hugh Durham
Some of the charges rendered against
Georgia include excessive visits and
illegally providing transportation for
Henderson during the recruiting
period.
Georgia has been accused of con
tacting Henderson over 30 times prior
to his signing with Georgia. NCAA rules
allow a school only six visits to
prospective signecs
