Women have made great
strides in the entertainment
business m the past few
decades Not just in the
writing and directing of
films and plays, but in the
roles that have been made
specifically lor them A
great female role is still
treasured More plays are
being written, and movies
are being made about
women and their attitudes
and beliefs Beth Henley’s
“Crimes ol the Heart" is an
example ot this celebration
of femininity It’s a play
about women and their at
titudes toward men. a
scenario usually reversed
"Crimes ol the Heart" is a
Puliter Prize winning play
infused with a dependence
on dialogue It stars Tess
Harper, who received
considerable kudos for her
performances in the films
"Silkwood" and “Tender
Mercies."
The play is about three
sisters experiencing grow ing
pains in smalltown
Hazelhurst, Miss Con
ceming itself with why all
three sisters appear
neurotic, the play delves
into their personal lives and
the events that are tearing
them apart
Harper plays the tortured
man hungry Lenoir
Mangrath to the hilt She’s
constantly being gun-shy
about improving herself and
ridding herself of the
loneliness that plague her
Lennie is the eldest of the
Mangrath sisters and is
matronly toward them A
tragic character in her
refusal to allow herself to
break free from her
existence and do something
with the world. Lennie is
truly a lover in search of
someone to love

Though Harper has been
given star billing, the rest ol
the east is strong and is an
integral part of the play The
three actresses portraying
the sisters create a special
chemistry on stage as they
laugh, cry and dream as
traditional sisters are
supposed to do
Spring Ann Mason gives
Meg Magrath the sassiness
that is central to her
character Meg is the typical
middle child looking (or
attention in outrageous
behavior and her flashy
personality Her career as a
lounge singer is easy to
believe One can easily see
her belting out Streisand
songs in the smoky lounge
without Streisand's voice
Naturally, her cockiness has
been her downfall
Babe, the youngest kid. is
played by Ingrid McIntosh
She becomes the locus o( the
play and provides it with its
spotty plot Babe, in direct
contrast to her apparent
innocence, has just shot < but
not killed i her husband
because as she says she
"doesn't like his looks.” This
twist is shocking because
McIntosh's portrayal of
Babe is one of fresh good-
heartedness and as someone
who gets pushed around fhe
world by its evil com
ponents Seemingly never in
control of the events that
rule her life, Babe floats
through the play as though
she never quite understands
Iter impetuous personality is
exhibited in the play several
times including the mindless
act of violence that the play
revolves around,
"Crimes o( the Heart”
hardly dwells on this plot,
though Instead, like many
recent movies, particularly
The Breakfast Club,
"Crimes of the Heart" is a
fragmented look at the sad
way in which people live
their lives. The play is a
string of vignettes played out
by its characters who,
though normal, are con
sidered abnormal by others
because of their past. The
play comes in pieces with
only its tragedy stringing the
bits together The sad irony
in the sisters' belief that they
are "going to make it” is
that they aren't going to
make it Five year later
Lennie will still be lonely,
Meg will still tie singing in
cocktail lounges; and Babe
will probably have losl
control ot her own freedom
Beth Henley in "Crimes of
the Heart" draws an ef
fective parallel in Ihe
sisters' problems with men

them can hold on to a man
long enough to fall in love
Lennie broke up her only
relationship because she was
unsure ot herself Meg broke
up her one lasting
relationship by going to
California to further her
career Babe ended her
marriage with a gun The
girls draw a real strength
from one another. This
dependence is part of the
play's theme in that in the
end one has family and one
is rich.
Despite Ihe overwhelming
success ot the onstage
players (Laura Ackerman Is
wonderfully haleable as
Chick) Ihe play does drag at
lime, and it must be watched
to be appreciated bul Ihe
effort is worth it.
