Golfers hope to win SEC
Georgia's men's gotl team
left for Florence, Ala ,
earlier this week to try and
do something they haven’t
done all year — win a
tournament
But it won't be just any
tournament The Bulldogs
will be trying to win the
Southeastern Conference
Championships at Turtle
Point Golf Course in
Alabama
Winning has been just out
of Georgia's reach all season
long The Bulldogs have
finished second in three
different tournaments this
year, the latest just this past
week at the Southern In
tercollegiate Championships
at the Athens Country Club
Prior to that tournament,
Georgia finished third at the
Chris Schenkel Invitational
in Statesboro, Georgia
Coach Dick Copas hopes lo
carry that momentum into
the conference tournament
"We’ve been playing
better as a whole." Copas
said “This past week, we
played better than we have
all year, but that's not good
enough to win the SEC I
hope we can get a little bit
better If we can. we may be
able to do something '
Winning the SEC con
ference, however, is nothing
new to the Georgia program
The Bulldogs have won 20
conference titles, more than
in any other sport, the latest
in 1983 at Augusta The team
won five conference titles in
a row from 1961-65.
This past year, Georgia
placed third behind then-
senior Bob Walcott's third-
place score of 215 This year.
Georgia’s leader will be
junior Peter Persons
Persons leads the team
with a stroke average of 71 2
His 66 in the last round of last
week's SICs matched his
best performance of the
season and propelled him to
a second-place finish
Dick Copas
"He's played well." Copas
said. “I was hoping he would
win a couple of tournamenfs
this year and so was he The
next two will be the biggest
of the year and his game is
getting to the point where it
needs to be for him to win "
Play will begin today and
continue through Sunday
with the final round
Lady Dogs head for Orient
Take that!
Allen Miller, ranked as the 32nd best player in the nation, will
he an integral part of the Bulldogs' plan lo win the NCAA
Team Championship. Not only must he perform well in the
singles matches, but he must team with Mikarl Pernfurs in
the doubles matches as well. The Pernfors-Miller team has
won its last ten matches this season and is currently ranked
\u. 2 in the country.
Two forwards from Georgia's women's
basketball team have been named to two
U S National teams slated for international
play this summer
Katrina McClain was named to the World
University Games team and Lisa O'Connor
was named to a team to participate in the R
William Jones cup
Each team was announced last week in
separate proclamations by the Amateur
Basketball Association of the USA
IABAUSAI The World University Games
will be held in Kobe. Japan. August 24
through September 4 Prior to the Games,
the team will compete in a tournament in
Sheng-yang. China. August 10-19
The Jones Cup, scheduled for June 15-28,
will take place in Taipei, Taiwan
McClain, of Charleston. S C averaged 13.7
points and 8.1 rebounds for the Lady
Bulldogs this past season She led the
Southeastern Conference for the second
straight season and in blocked shots The
rising junior scored a career-high 25 points
against Western Kentucky in the NCAA
Final Four
Lisa O'Connor, a 6-1 senior-to-be from
Cartersville, Ga . scored 10 2 points and
hauled in 5 1 rebounds per game for
Georgia last season Her 1.145 points in
three seasons made her the sixth player in
Lady Bulldog history to score more than
1.000 career points
