ATLANTA (AP) — Lawyers for the
American Civil Liberties Union charged in a
federal complaint Monday that Georgia
Power Co is using rigged or faulty drug
screening tests to fire "whistleblowers" at
its nuclear power plant under construction in
east Georgia
In a petition filed on behalf of five former
workers at the Plant Vogtle construction
site, ACLU attorneys asked the US
Department of Labor to order the utility to
discontinue use of urine tests and to reinstate
all workers who have been discharged for
refusing to take or for failing the tests
The complaint said the company im
plemented the drug-screening policy last
spring by setting up a “hotline" whereby
workers could call in with anonymous tips
about employees who were using drugs
Persons so accused were then forced to
undergo a urinalysis, and those who refused
to submit or who failed it were dismissed, the
complaint said
ACLU attorneys said the five ex
employees named in the complaint “were
reported on the company's hotline or
otherwise targeted to take the urinalysis
screening test soley as a consequence of
making complaints” to company quality
assurance personnel and to the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission
Three of the five - Steve McNally, Billy
Weatherford and Susan Tiller Register -
were dismissed after refusing to take the
test The other two —Leslie Price and James
B Register-were dismissed after company
officials told them they had failed the test,
the complaint said
Georgia Power spokesman Dave Altman
declined to comment on the specific cases
but said company officials discussed the
drug programs with the ACLU and "ex
plained to them why we feel the program is
important "
He said Georgia Power does not harass
employees who report safety problems at
Plant Vogtle "We actively encourage em
ployees to anonymously report not only
questions about safety, but about our work
quality as well .," he said

Women have to be aggressive to make a
place for themselves in areas of the work
force that have previously been run
predominantly by men, WSB anchor Monica
Kaufman told a luncheon group sponsored by
the Panhellenic Council Monday
“I attribute my ability to be a news anchor
to the women who came before me and
proved that women can In- good news an
chors," Kaufman said “Equal opportunity
means that women have un equal op
portunity to succeed or fail .”
Expectations for women anchors are
different from those for male anchors If a
woman anchor asks a hard news question
about a live report, the viewing public calls
to voice their outrage even though the vast
majority probably wanted to know the an
swer to that question, she said
"Men in TV do not have to be quite as
appearance conscious as women, " Kaufman
said. “If a woman news anchor looks bad
people call to complain, and if a woman
anchor looks so good that she distracts from
the newscast then the producers and
directors get very upset "
""Critics come from all directions and
complain about everything from my hair to
the fact that I sometimes question or correct
the other anchors or reporters," Kaufman
said.
