individual lilies and lied for
first place in team points
with LSU al the
Southeastern Conference
Outdoor Championships at
Baton Kouge. La . Sunday
Georgia's Swedish ace
Mikael Pernfors became
only the third player in
Georgia history to win the
SEC No. 1 singles title
Pernfors defeated Ten
nessee's' Shelby Cannon. 6-4,
6-3 in the title match. The
last Georgia player to win
the No 1 title was Manuel
Diaz, now assistant coach at
Georgia, who won it as a
freshman in 1873
The Bulldogs' George
Bezecny won the No. 2
singles title by defeating
Greg Hahn of Alabama. 6-2,
6-2 The title is Bezecny's
first in the SEC Outdoors
Tournament.
freshman Trey Carter
was a winner at the No 6
singles spot as he defeated
Jason Noonan of Louisiana
State, 6-2,6-1
Georgia's Allen Miller
advanced to the finals of the
tournament before losing to
LSU'i Billy Uribe 6-7, 6-4, 7-
6
The only Georgia doubles
team to win a title was the
No 3 tandem of Bezecny and
Carter. The two defeated Pat
McGee and Paul Varga of
Kentucky 6-3, 6-4 in the title
match
Georgia finished with LSU
at the top with 26 points,
while Tennessee was third
with 20
Georgia Coach Dan Magill
said that his team deserved
praise especially because of
the formal of the tour
nament
"I was pleased with the
play of our team." Magill
said "The format of the
tournament is structured
around so many good learns
that it makes it extremely
close ”
Five of the six Georgia
Pernfors was one of four
SEC team
players participating in the
event were named to the All-
Southeastern Conference
List

Miller were selected by

regional rankings

While Georgia wan
running through its spring
football drills this past
month, the Bulldogs' II
opponents for the next fall
were doing the same.
Today is the first in a
series of what those op
ponents accomplished at
their respective spring
practices
The Bulldogs. 7 4 1 this
past fall, will play a
similar schedule as last
year The only changes
are the home opener
against Baylor and the
Nov. 2 game against
Tulane, between the
hedges
In today's report, the
focus is on Georgia's first
three opponents — Baylor.
Clemson and South
Carolina
Ckmson (7-4) — Gone are William Refrigerator” Perry
and two-sport quarterback Mike Epplev Injuries took
their toll on the Tigers, forcing them to cancel the last two
days of practice The offensive line, which lost five of six
starters, was hurt the most Only returnee Sieve Reece
was injury-free Defensive tackle Michael Perry,
William's younger brother, broke a hand the week of the
Orange White game and missed the contest Sophomore
Rand) Anderson and freshman Rodnev Williams dueled
for the starting quarterback job, but neither won the job
Clemson's runningback trio — Stacey Driver. Terrence
Flagler and Kennv Flowers — had good springs

Baylor (641 - Coach Grant Tcaff borrowed the wide
tackle six defense from Georgia's Vince Dooley, and the
Bears led the Southwest Conference in defense this past
fall Three of Ihe four defensive linemen are gone, but the
secondary returns all four starters Baylor will continue
lo use quarterbacks Tom Muecke and tody tarlson in
terchangeably The Bears switched from the I-offense to
the veer, which they ran two years ago. to gel the running
backs into the passing lanes sooner Baylor will be two-
deep on the offensive line for the first time in a long time,
but nobody emerged as the leader at the runningback
positions --
