Following on the heels of a surprising season in the
Southeastern Conference, three Georgia baseball players
earned All-SEC honors.
Freshman Ron M enrich and Derek Lilliquist joined junior
Marty Brown on the team which included three Mississippi
State players and two from Ole Miss and Florida
Wenrich, a freshman who did not play in the team's first 13
games, exploded midway through the season to provide a
large part of the Bulldogs offense in their drive to the SEC
tournament The powerful lefthander struck for a 396
average w ith 20 home runs and 70 RBI to earn first team All-
SEC status Following Georgia's Sunday loss to Mississippi
State for the SEC title. Wenrich was also selected for the SEC
tournament team
Wenrich also collected three school records this season.
Falling to his powerful swing were the RBI record (formerly
66 by Jeff Pyburn in 19801, the home run record (formerly 15
by Pyburn in 1980 >; and the total bases record (formerly 125
by Jeff Rutter in 19841
Lilliquist strengthened both the Bulldog batting and pit
ching corps this year en route to being selected for the All-
SEC second team He finished the year hitting 355 with five
homers and 24 RBI Lilliquist, who collected 11 doubles
hitting behind Wenrich for the latter part of the season, was
also selected for the SEC tournament team as the DH
On the mound. Lilliquist s fastball was unhittable After
losing his first starts for the Dogs, the freshman won eight of
his next nine starts for an 8 5 mark Lilliquist recorded a new
Georgia record. 93 strikeouts, with a 3 87 ERA Georgia
coach Steve Webber considered Lilliquist the ace of his staff
and continually relied on the big lefthander to win clutch
games for the Diamond Dogs in the SEC stretch drive
Joining Lilliquist on the All-SEC second team is Brown,
w ho was named to the All-SEC Eastern Division team in 1984
Brown contributed to the Bulldogs' winning ways in '85 with

Ewing can ’t guarantee championship
WASHINGTON 1AP1 -
Patrick Ewing, the top prize
in the National Basketball
Association draft lottery,
said that he alone can’t
guarantee an NBA cham
pionship for the New York
Knicks. the team that won
his rights
“I'm just going to do the
best I can. that's all I can
ask," the 7-foot center said
in an opinion seconded by his
coach at Georgetown
University, John Thompson
' Patrick has proven he
makes a major contribution
wherever he goes, but people
have to get acclimated to
each other and that takes
time," Thompson said
While telephone lines at
Madison Square Garden in
New York were jammed by
calls from fans requesting
Knicks' season tickets and a
steady line snaked outside
the team's ticket offices,
Ewing. Thompson and
Ewing's agents were
meeting with about 150
reporters on the Georgetown
campus
The agents. David Falk
and Donald Dell, were tak
ing a hard line in the after
math of Sunday's lottery, in
which the Knicks had the
good fortune to get the first
pick over the six other NBA
teams who failed to make
the playoffs this season
"It’s too early to speculate
on contract talks." said
Falk, adding that none of
Ewing's representatives had
spoken to the Knicks yet
"He doesn't have to sign
with anybody," said Dell,
holding out tin* threat that
Ewing still could challenge
in court the draft and lottery
procedures. "We have a long
negotiation ahead of us lie
doesn't have to sign with
anybody or do anything The
options are still there "
But Ewing seemed happy
with the idea of playing for
the Knicks and staying in the
East in a Big East Con
ference city. Asked if he had
a chance to spend much time
in New York sightseeing.
Ewing replied: "When I
came to New York. I came
for business and that’s all

cupying Uth in the previous poll Pernfors won the SEC No 1

Georgia closes in
on Bernie Moore
The Georgia track teams
are going to Starkville,
Miss., this weekend to
compete in the Southeastern
Conference Championships
and while they may not win
the meet, they may be
bringing home a trophy
anyway.
Georgia currently holds a
slim half-point lead over
Florida in the running for the
12th Annual Bernie Moore
Trophy. The trophy is
symbolic of overall athletic
supremacy in the SEC.
With a tie for first place in
tennis and second place
finishes in golf and baseball
last weekend, the Bulldogs
own a 50-49.5 advantage over
the Gators. The scoring for
the All-Sports trophy, by
event, awards 10 points for a
first-place finish, one point
for a 10th place and other
points accordingly.
Finishing one place ahead
of Florida in the upcoming
track and field cham
pionships would ensure
Georgia of its first all-sports
title Anything less and the
Gators will claim the trophy.
Other SEC teams stan
dings for the Bernie Moore
are LSU 144), Alabama 136),
Tennessee (32.5), 1984
winner Auburn (32), Ken
tucky (29.5), Mississippi
State (21), Vanderbilt (17)
and Mississippi (15.5).
