The Red and Black
Dunn believed lost
as Dogs visit Rebels

Some things change and others
slay the same
Thai's Ihe theme for the Georgia
men’s basketball team as it faces
an 8:30 p m Southeastern Confer
ence tilt against Mississippi tonight
in Oxford, Miss.
The change will occur on the
hardwood, specifically in the up
tempo strategy of Ole Miss coach
Ed Murphy He has promised to
pressure Georgia’s depleted team
into speeding up the pace
"He (Murphy) has been quoted as
saying he’ll play man-to-man de
fense and motion offense even if
he’s playing five walk-ons,’’
Georgia coach Hugh Durham said.
“Since we lost some players, just
about everybody has zoned us We
anticipate seeing man-to-man de
fense for 40 minutes Wednesday."
One thing will remain unchanged,
however. Center David Dunn, who
has missed the last four games with
a sore right foot, will not make the
trip to Mississippi and is not ex
pected back soon, if at all
Dunn, a 6-8 senior from Mableton.
Ga., first injured the foot in
summer of 1985 He missed the first
two weeks of fall practice a year
ago but played the entire season He
returned healthy this year and was
averaging 10 points and seven re
bounds per game before reinjuring
the foot Jan. 3 against Florida
The prognosis then was merely
tissue damage, but X-rays a week
later revealed a small crack in the
foot. It was hoped he’d return for a
Jan. 28 game with Tennessee, but
the pain persisted The college ca
reer of Dunn, who missed his
freshman season at Georgetown
with a stress fracture in his right
leg. is believed to be over.
"David’s still in a lot of pain,"
Durham said. “He has a high
threshold of pain. People don’t re
alize that he's had twisted ankles
and bad backs and gone out and
played sooner than the trainer said
he should have. If he tells me
there’s pain, then there’s pain.
"I agree with the doctors and the
trainer that he’s had a reoccurrence
of the stress fracture (in his right
foot). That’ll take anywhere from
six to seven weeks (to heal), then
he’ll have to start all over again "
Ole Miss, in a sense, is starting all
over again under first-year coach
Murphy, formerly boss at Liv
ingston and Delta State, where he
compiled a 144-83 record in eight
years. Murphy inherited three
starters from former coach Lee
Hunt, including forward Eric Smith,
a third-team All-SEC selection a
year ago
Smith, averaging 13 points and
seven rebounds per game, is one of
iour starters scoring in double fig
ures for the Rebels (8-6 overall. 1-4
SEC). He’s joined by forward Joe
Ayers (13 4 ppg) and guards Rod
Barnes (11.2) and Charles Prater
(13.9).
“They've played Alabama very
tough 'losing 71-62), they played
Florida tough," Durham said of the
Rebels. “Their talent level for their
first five or six is good Like some
other teams, they’re not as deep as
they'd like to be."
Mississippi’s speed-up plan seems
logical, especially since Durham re
cently adopted a slowdown style of
offense designed to work the 45-
second shot clock and take pressure
Durham not happy about possibly losing Dunn for season
oft his thin bench Durham said that
style is responsible for his team's
success
"You look at the last four games,
we’ve been able to be in the game
and stay out of foul trouble," he
said "The way we’ve been able to
do that is to hold the ball People
talk about what's the best defensive
stance, but the best defense is this
— holding the ball. If we’ve got it.
the other team has a hard time
scoring."
Durham doesn't expect similar
results against Ole Miss
"Other teams have allowed us to
keep the ball the majority of the
time," he said. "Ole Miss is gonna
change that And if we don't attack
the basket, there’s a greater chance
ol turning the ball over because
their defense is an aggressive man-
to-man."
Bulldog Notes: The game can be
heard over radio station WRFC (960
AM) beginning at 8:15
p m. Georgia is off Saturday be
fore returning home next
Wednesday to face Tennessee in a
7 30 p m. encounter.
Lady swimmers upset
highly ranked squads

Georgia’s 10th ranked women's
swim team upset two teams on its
way to a second-place finish in a
meet that displayed more talent,
than any other regular-season meet
Georgia has competed in
Three-time defending NCAA
champion Texas won its own Long
horn Invitational with 658 points
Georgia's total of 569 points easily
outdistanced fourth-ranked UCLA's
score of 430 and seventh-ranked Ari
zona State's 362 points
Southern Illinois, ranked 12th in
the nation, finished fifth in the six
way meet with 294 points and Ten
nessee finished sixth with 262 points
Georgia took advantage of the
fast pace of the meet to qualify 11
entries to the NCAA championships,
the same amount of swimmers
Georgia qualified throughout the en
tire season last year
"I think even more gratifying
than having that many girls qualify
for nationals is that everyone swam
fast, not just the first string." said
head coach Jack Bauerle "Every
swimmer we took to the meet
scored for the team.”
Freshman Karen Hill led
Georgia's list of NCAA qualifiers,
making the field in two individual
events and three relays. Hill was
one of four Georgia swimmers to
make the cutoff time in the 1,650-
yard freestyle event and also qual
ified in the 500-yard freestyle. 800-
yard freestyle relay, 400-yard free
style relay and 200-yard freestyle
relay.
Hill said competing with Texas’
five Olympians. Betsy Mitchell, the
world record holder in the 200-yard
backstroke; Tiffany Cohen; Carrie
Steinseifer; Tori Trees; and Kara
McGrath intimidated her
"I was a little intimidated at the
beginning of the meet," Hill said
"The big names scared me but the
team supported me and told me to
just do my best.”
Senior Susan Andra also qualified
in the 800- and 1.650-yard freestyles
and the 800 yard freestyle relay
Her 1.650-yard freestyle time of
16 28 74 set a new school record
Other 1,650-yard freestyle qual
ifiers were Peggy Rothenbach and
Linda Leith.
Bauerle said a fifth Georgia
swimmer. Deanne Burnett, also has
a shot at qualifying for nationals
Kathy Coffin and Deanne Burnett
were members of the 800-yard free
style relay team, while Karla Mos-
dell, Sybille Spaeti and Coffin joined
Hill on the qualifying 200- and 400-
yard freestyle relay teams.
Diver Margarita Cabrera qual
ified for nationals in the one- and
three-meter diving events.
Andra said Georgia's ranking un
derestimates the team's potential
"It doesn't seem like anyone
takes us seriously," said Andra.
“We re ranked 10th right now but
we re gonna blow away that ranking
at nationals, there’s no doubt about
that When we can go to a meet and
beat the fourth- and seventh-ranked
teams and come close to beating
No 1. it’s a real confidence
builder."
Georgia will need that confidence
this weekend as it hosts Texas at
Stegeman Friday at 1 p m., and be
cause of Georgia's exceptional per
formance at the Longhorn
Invitational. Texas won’t be taking
any chances by putting in anything
but its strongest lineup
