‘Knowing, even though I didn't see it, that
Kentucky got beat by somebody 76-U
•One-man teams. t Navy scored 69 points
against Kentucky last weekend and David Rob
inson scored 45 of them
•The spirit of ,Georgia’s lesser-kpown athletic
teams. They pluck along without a lot of.sUpport
just for the spirit of competition and the feeling
of accomplishment
•Hockey fight highlights which are probably
the same as roller derby highlights — if there
are such things
•Watching the world get so offended by a
harmless loser like John McEnroe.
•Sitting in class daydreaming of an exciting
Super B&wl
•The humiliation of a safety in football
•Any basketball game that has Michael Jordan
and Dominique Wilkins on the same court. The
games in which they both play are almost too ex
citing to talk about You hate to say it. but the
score starts to mean nothing. The athletic talent'
becomes pure beauty after awhile.
•Isiah Thomas At his absolute best, he can
control and dominate a game like the best cen
ters can
•Anything having to do with the Chicago Cubs
from Harry Carry to Wrigley Field to Buaweiser
and day baseball Everyone laughs at the Cubs
for being losers, but they don’t realize how
classy the franchise really is; They've never ex-
Raymond Valley
perienced the atmqsphere of Wrigley Field and
how loyal the fans are ,By (he way, this fortes
me to say that Peter Ueberroth has nothing to do
with fun in sports.
•Funny controversies like the ones involving
instant replay and the pipe tar incident a doupje
of years back in baseball. Nothing like a good
rhubarb
•The Superstars series. I don't care how con
trived it was; watching Lynn Swann rip through
the obstacle course while Dan Dierdorf tripped
over the tires was great
•Indoor soccer. Sports this goofy have to be
kept around to ease the seriousness of it all
• Sports Illustrated " The magazine has be
come the conscience of the sports world with
constant and sometimes caustic criticism mixed
with humor and fairness
•Making fun of Brent Musburger. who has
gone from a joke to a parody of himself to.an an
nouncer who sounds like he's trying out for a role
in a Shakespearean drama ’
•Making fun of Larry Bird even though inside
you respect the hell out of him.
•Wondering about the'Atlanta Braves’ hopes of
avoiding the cellar in 1987 Those chances don’t
look too good. I'm afraid. .
•Rooting for fun-time Hawks’ guard John
Battle to do well. Battle.is easy to root for. When
he comes into the game, he does his job, no\ in a
timid or show offy manner, but the way it’s sup
posed to be done
•Dale Murphy.
•Arguing about who’s better or what league is
better or what game was better. A good sports
argument makes your brain whiz.
•A big offensive guard crying because his
team has just been beaten by a scrawny kicker.
•Picking up the sports section of a newspaper
any morning of the year.
•The New York Mets. The Mets are real. They
get into scuffles, they mouth off. and they make
everybody mad at them Then they turn around
and laugh at all the hoopla they created arid go
out and win the World Series
•That point in a basketball game when the
crowd has been building itself into a frenzy all
night and is suddenly screaming as a crucial re
bound comes off the glass. It happened in the At
lanta Hawks-Ix)s Angeles Lakers game.
•Chris Berman and those wacky nicknames
•The question. *1 wonder how that Clippers-
Nets game is going?"
But. hey, sports itself is fun. Winners and
losers and personalities make sports an obses
sive form of entertainment. Whatever, I love it

Lady Bulldogs drop
squeaker to Tenn.

First the bad news.
Georgia's women’s basketball
team’s faint hopes for a South
eastern Conference season title
ended Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn .
with a 78-72 loss to the Lady Volun
teers.
The Lady Bulldogs held 13«point
leads twice in the first half, the last
one coming with 6:35 remaining.
But All-American forward Katrina
McClain, who had already scored 19
points, picked up her third foul and
had to leave the game.
With McClain on the bench. Ten
nessee narrowed the margin to four
at halftime. McClain returned in the
second half and finished with 33
points and 11 rebounds, but the
Lady Volunteers had already gamed
the necessary momentum
Georgia fell to 14-3, 2-2 in the SEC,
while Tennessee improved to 14-2
and 3-1. In the latest national poll,
the Lady Volunteers are ranked
third and the Lady Bulldogs 10th.
with three other conference teams
in between.
Now the good news. Despite the
loss. Georgia head coach Andy
Landers was pleased with his
team’s effort for the first time in
weeks.
i felt the team grew a little bit,"
he said “They really came together
in spirit before the game. I think
they wereexcited about the opportu
nity to play a quality team on its
home floor. And for the most part,
they rose to the occasion."
