Landy manufacturers offer scholarship
Tuebday, January 27, 1987
The Ked and Black
By Bill Anderbon
Ked and Black Stall Writer
In the past, most people witfi a
weet tooth had to worry about
tooth decay and calories, but now
university students with an interest
in candy can make their favorite sin
pay for itself.
r Th . e American Association of
Sfndy Technologists has awarded
the University a scholarship fund
tor food science majors who have
an interest in confectionary tech
nology. All University classes, in
cluding graduate students, are
eligible except freshmen.
Joseph Jen, division chairman
and head of the University’s food
science department, said the asso
ciation, a national trade organiza
tion of candy manufacturers, has an
educational committee that pro
motes student interest in confectio
nery manufacturing.
Confectionery technology is the
application of science and tech
nology in the production of candies,
doughnuts, cakes, pies and other
snack foods, said Dorris Lillard,
food science professor.
The association awarded the
scholarship fund because they
wanted to attract a top student to
work in their industry, Jen said.
The manufacturers also felt that
they needed to advertise themselves
in some way, he said.
The association chose to award
the scholarship to the University
partly because of the reputation of
its food science department. Jen
said. Another reason was the geo
graphic distribution of the various
scholarships the associations gives,
he said.
“The association's first schol
arship was awarded at Wisconsin
University in the Midwest and the
second v«s at Drexel University on
the East Coast," Jen said. “Sp it
was the southeastern section of the
Chris Hill mun/Thc Ked and Black
trade association that obtained the
right for the establishment of a
third scholarship."
In addition to the scholarship, the
student can participate in a paid
summer internship with a candy
manufacturer in the Southeast, Lil
lard said. The internship can earn
students five credit hours in the
food science department.
“Some of the main companies the
student could work for include
Tom’s Foods, in Columbus, Ga . M
& M Mars, in Albany, Ga., and
Brach Candies in Chattanooga.
Tenn..” he said.
An awards committee in the food
science department will select the
student who will receive the schol
arship, Lillard said. The committee
will advertise the scholarship in the
fall and collect applications, and it
will go to the best-qualified appli
cant, he said.
Challenger monument to be unveiled in Albany
THOMASVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A
monument designed by a Thom-
asville man in memory of the astro
nauts who died in last year's space
shuttle explosion will be dedicated
in Albany Wednesday.
The Albany site was selected after
three Florida communities refused
to accept the memorial, said Albert
Hirschensohn, a retired Hallandale.
Fla., businessman who, conceived
the idea and financed »he mon
ument.
The 9-foot monument of polished
black granite was designed by Hon
Vyilkerson of Thomasville at the re
quest of Hirschensohn, an Albany
native. «
The monument was made in Ver
mont.
Wilkerson’s design features the
portraits of id* astronauts — the
seven who died in the Challenger
explosion and- the three who lost
their lives in earlier accidents — in
a semi-circle around an American
flag. •
The Challenger itself, is shown
poised for takeoff on the bottom of
the memorial.
•Dedication ceremonies are sched- |
uled for Wednesday at the Hasan
Shrine Temple in Albany.
The dedication falls on the one
year anniversary of the space
shuttle Challenger disaster. The
shuttle exploded 72 seconds after
taking off from its Cape Capaveral
launch site
Hirschensohn said he offered the
monument to Hallandale, but the
city council changed its mind after
first voting to accept the gift.
The memorial was then ottered to
the neighboring communities of Hol
lywood and the South Broward Park
District ; both of which rejected it.
