three-year. $3.9 million deal This is the same
pittance Bob Horner, that future Hall of+'amer.
rejected Do some folks ever learn?
I bring up Horner only to stick in a quote by
lorn Grieve, general manager of the Texas
Hangers, who recently explained his lack of in
terest in Atlanta's overweight legend.
‘1 heard he was embarrassed by Atlanta's
<>'ter. Grieve said *‘I didn't want to add to his
embarrassment."
Did I forget Detroit's Lance Parrish and Bos
wins Rich Gedman. recently seen sleeping on
park benches all across the Northeast?
Chris Delleciw
M
Parrish, who may not play much due to a bad
back, is mulling a one-year. $1.1 million snub
from the Tigers Gedman. Boston's illustrious
catcher, almost hit 260 this year Surely the Sox
don't expect him to settle for a couple million
over two seasons
Not to mention Don Mattingly of the Yankees,
who recently squeezed $19 million from that
noted miser. George Steinbrenner. who only put
up $1.7.
Which brings up another issue - the players'
allegation that owners are acting in collusion to
drive down salaries. Collusion? .’
If I'm an owner. I try this word on the players
elimination. Eliminate all of them You don't
like the bucks offered, there's the door Get a
real job
Why can't the owners just smile, smirk and
say. “Yeah, collusion, so what? We pay the bills
You're the employee. You don't want to work for
us. hit the pavement.''
These owners ore rich They have to be to af
ford the $40-50 million price tag of a major
league franchise. So obviously these guys know a
little about running a profitable business
Yet they've run their teams like fools Thank
fully, the times are a-changin' in the front office
Players are going to find things a bit changed
as well Here's one fan hoping that those igno
rant fools who turned down rich contracts stay
out in the cold. «
What these players don't realize is that the
game goes on. Baseball won't cease to exist be-’
cause Lance Parrish isn't playing The Tigers
will get another catcher, not as good as Parrish,
but someone who loves the game more.
How terrible would it be if every free agent sat
out. anyway? Would the world stop spinning if
Doyle Alexander and Bob Horner played softball
in the park ’
Owners want to win. just like their cities' fans
But at what cost?
New York fans are excited because the Mets
are world champs. They don't care if the team
lost close to nine million dollars in the pnGM
and they prohably shouldn't.
The owners should. Now. the owners do
Detroit finished fourth with Parrish. Atlanta
last with Horner Gedman was Boston's fifth
best player
They won’t be missed. Just forgotten.
