From page I
Kyle MacLachlan stars as an FBI agent in “The Hidden.”
^Hidden’ surprises with
superb action, acting
spends on the other side” as unim
portant At first, this aspect seems
a bit of a cop-out. but lx>ng quickly
pointed out the reasoning behind not
attempting to say something about
the here after
“She doesn't remember what hap
pened to her.” Long said. “It’s sort
of like not remembering a dream I
think that’s only fair because for as
many people as there are on Earth,
there would be that many theories
as to what goes on beyond life.
it was really up to us to consider
what Lucy would feel like after that
event,” she continued. “She doesn’t
talk about it, but as an actress
that's part of what my preparation
is to know how that woman feels
at any given moment.”
Before her unfortunate encounter
with the chicken ball, Lucy’s pri
mary concerns are being a house
wife and mother
Those are my priorities too.”
Long said “Family, relationship,
friends, fun: they all fit into my ca
reer
“I tend to do films about
relationships.” she continued. “It’s
not a conscious choice, but it seems
the material and the projects that
I'm interested in deal with
relationships.
Long’s credits include “Night
Shift,” “Irreconcilable Differences’’
and “Caveman.’’
“They are the most challenging,
the most rewarding and most com
plex of situations. I’m a big one for
romance and I like to see that in my
work and in my life,” she said.
Of all the characters she’s played,
it comes as a bit of a surprise to dis
cover she likes Lucy the best
“All my characters are special to
me,” Long said. “They’re all like
friends. There is. though, something
very special about this one I think
Lucy is just about the nicest lady
I ve ever played. She is so loving
and so positive and very unneurotic,
which 1 like She doesn’t stay locked
in her head and worry about what
she's thinking ”
Long has somewhat specialized in
playing characters with certain de
grees of niceties throughout her ca
reer and intends to do so for the
future.
“I’m not really interested in vil-
lainesses.” she said "I think there
are dark sides to all of us and we
need to acknowledge those sides and
sort of talk to those shadow sides,
but to play a character that lives
the dark side would be less than ap
pealing to me.”
What Long does find appealing is
her new responsibility of carrying a
film This is the first time people
will be looking at a film and saying
it lives or dies with Shelley Long
“It’s a little scary,” Ixmg said
"It’s also very exciting at the same
time But what excited me most
about the picture was the character,
her priorities, sensibilities and the
physical comedy. It is a big job with
big responsibilities, but I had a good
time and I'm real proud of the pic
ture."
For any actor, the blessings and
the curses can sometimes rest with
one character In Long's case, such
a character is Diane Chambers, of
“Cheers.” In recent weeks, rumors
have circulated concerning an offer
for. Long’s return to the show for
two episodes Such mumblings are
completely unfounded, she said.
“Really.” Long said with genuine
surprise after hearing the gossip. “I
haven’t heard this offer I hear
about this stuff < rumors > last This
could be a complete fabrication in
somebody ’s head
“I would be open to that (the idea
of doing a show or two again),”
Long said. “If it felt right to them
and it felt right to me. absolutely.
But no one has asked, including me.
I would welcome the opportunity to
see all of them again and work with
them. I miss them ”
A review of "The Hidden." starring
Kyle MacLachlan. Michael Nouri

Whoa doggy! Pull the reins and
slow them horses down. Climb
aboard a bumpy stagecoach ride in
the old-west fashion Experience an
unforgettable excursion into the
land of combined genres for a fan
tastic new thriller called “The
Hidden "
The marshalls are two cops hot on
the trail of a man who loves to steal
Ferrarris, listen to loud rock music,
eat steak, drink beer, have sex and
kill a great many people The only
problem for the police is that the
man is also a woman or even a dog
if it wants to be because, in actua
lity, he is an it
the quick-draw magraws are
L.A. homicide investigator Tom
Beck (Michael Nouri) and a G-man
from the state of Washington, Lloyd
Gallagher (Kyle Macl^achlan). The
two form an uneasy alliance in the
hopes of catching the thing which
has turned into a human slaughter
machine.
“The Hidden" has an unbelie
vable amount in common with the
sensational picture from 1984. “The
Terminator ” The picture isn’t
about a futuristic android, but the
pacing is quick and the story is well-
written.
The film starts with a bloody bank
I holdup and immediately zips into a
I rapid car chase It takes a while to
figure out where the film’s going,
but it finally leads to an "Invasion
Of The Body Snatchers” twist. A
creature takes over a human and
uses it as a host until the body is
damaged beyond use Apparently
the creature can only remain in a
person for so long before the body
becomes worthless.
Rather daringly, either because of
a smart move on the director’s part
or from budget restrictions, the
creature is only shown two or three
times This allows an audience to
keep from grossing out every time
the thing transfers from one body to
another and keeps viewers en
trapped in the sharply-tuned story.
The monster isn’t dumb. Gal
lagher’s been following its grue
some trail for some time and
distance
MacLachlan as Gallagher is his
usual stoic and wooden self. But di
rector Jack Sholder ("A Nightmare
On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Re
venge”), like David Lynch before
him. usts MacLachlan to his advan
tage By having an actor with lim
ited range play a character with an
equally limited ability to express
himself, MacLachlan ends up
smelling like roses on a spring day.
Nouri, who played the male love
interest in the film “Flashdance,”
manages to play a tough cop with a
caring family and does a bang-up
job in the process. This time he
proves to be something more than a
dime store model propped in front
of a camera.
The film entertains on more than
an action/horror level. The film has
twice the laughs of “Beverlv Hills
Cop II
Wonderful little films like “The
Hidden” make this dreary fall
season a lot brighter It’s great to
have something worth looking at be
sides all the pretty, dead leaves.

Long laughed at a comment that
“Hello Again” was another in a new
line of “husband bashing” films to
surface this year
"I wouldn't describe it as that.”
she said.
She elaborated on Corbin Bern
sen's role of husband in “Hello
Again.”
“This husband,” she said, “gets
himself into a rather strange predic
ament Who would have expected
his wife to come back after she
died? That’s sort of unexpected But
he makes bad choices after she
shows up again and that’s his
problem He starts to see the light
at the end "
Bemsen plays a somewhat iden
tical character to the one he por
trays in the television series “L.A
Law."
“I've heard Corbin saying his
character in this film is the plastic
surgeon of his character on “L.A
Law." Long said. “I see a lot of dif
ferences. too He’s obviously mar
ried and he has a son who he cares
about (in “Hello Again”). He man
ages to pull off a character who
makes bad choices and the audience
still ends up liking him all the way
through the film
Susan Isaacs, who wrote the
screenplay for “Compromising Po
sit ions, also wrote “Hello Again.”
In "Positions.” Issacs put men in a
somewhat unfavorable light, so
maybe the idea of “husband
bashing” isn't too far off However.
Long saw things differently
I/)ng said a man wouldn't have
written the script in the same
fashion He would have made the
husband die and come back to life,
she said.
Lucy Chadman, Long's character
in the film, dies by suffocating on a
giant South Korean chicken ball
Long hastened to assure audiences
they won't be turned off by the
event
“It is a funny scene,” she said
with a confident smile “You don’t
have to worry about some sort of
horrendously graphic and unplea
sant death scene She tries to give
herself the Heimlich maneuver, but
she doesn't succeed.”
The film skirts over the time Lucy
