Georgia has an Ice hockey team? Here,
down South, where most people have only
seen ice in their undefrosted freezers?
Non-Yankees beware Ice hockey is here
and is one of the newer of 24 clubs listed
with the Recreational Sports Department
this year
Sophomore Larry Hall is responsible for
creating the team Hall previously played
hockey at St Mary's College in Winona,
Minn., on a scholarship
After Hall transferred to Georgia last
fall, he discovered that other schools such
as Georgia State and Georgia Tech had
hockey teams
“I thought that if both those schools
could have teams, so could Georgia," Hall
said, “so I went to the Rec Sports Depart
ment to look into it "
Hall talked to Dr Jane Russell, assis
tant director of student activities for rec
reational sports
Russell said if there is an interest in a
club and there is someone to organize it by
presenting a budget, roster and possible
schedule, that club will likely be granted
funds for a probationary period
The ice hockey team isn't a varsity sport
but it does compete against other colleges
and universities.
A championship tournament is held in
Maryland the first week in March, but
Hall said the Bulldogs will not be eligible
this year because they must complete the
probationary season
There is already evidence of great per
formances on the ice, Hall said, but the
team's greatest weakness at this point is
not the inexperience of the team or their
dedication. Most of the players on the
team have played for an average of 10
years, and most of them are originally
from the North
The problem lies with the lack of money
needed to fund the program
Hockey is an expensive sport, Hall said
It costs $200 to rent the ice for two hours of
practice time To lessen the expense,
Georgia shares the ice and practices with
Georgia State
Because of the lack of additional funds,
and taking into account the distance from
Athens to Stone Mountain. Georgia can
practice only once a w eek on the ice
Stone Mountain Ice Chalet is their home
rink, and although they don't spend much
time practicing on the ice. Hall said there
is a great deal of enthusiam and dedica
tion.
"Their attendance at practices is almost
perfect, both at the dry-land workouts and
ice practices,'' Hall said
At this time, Russell said the amount of
money funded to the team has not neen fi
nalized.
Rec Sports has 23 other clubs and activ
ities among which they have to divide a
set amount of money The money received
is based on different factors including the
level and type of organization, the number
of students involved and how responsibly
the club behaved with the money granted
from the previous years
It is a Rec Sports policy that there can
be no corporate sponsorship of clubs, Rus
sell said, but the hockey team is looking
into possible fund raising activities
Working with Hall this year is his father,
Ronald Hall
The elder Hall has had a great deal of
experience with hockey He has been pres
ident of the GAHA (Georgia Amateur
Hockey Association, for several years and
has been a coach in Atlanta since 1972
After losing their first two games at
North Carolina State, the Bulldogs started
a two-game series against Georgia State,
winning won the first game 6-2
Junior Erik Belinfante scored two goals
for Georgia Adding to these goals were
sophomores Richard Skaggs and David
Gillen and juniors Scott Barber and Tim
Moreau
Juniors John Pennington and Paul Smith
each scored assists for Georgia.
In the second game against the Pan
thers, the Bulldogs were edged out 3-2
Georgia goals were scored by Barber and
Skaggs with an assist from sophomore
Jeff Darrow
Last weekend, Georgia played its third
two-game series against Emory Univer
sity and once again split the series, win
ning Saturday's game 10-4 and losing
Sunday 3-1.
Scorers were Skaggs with three goals.
Belinfante and Barber each had two and
Darrow, John Pennington and John
Powers with one goal apiece in the win.
The lone Georgia goal on Sunday was
scored by Barber and assisted by Hall
