"We re all dlnappuinled we didn't
play well againal Auburn,' split end
John Thomns said. "We wanted lo
prove that we were the best In the
SEC "
Auburn's balanced offense and
swarming defense proved to be too
much for the Dogs. While Tiger
quarterback Jefl Burger threw for
217 yards and two touchdowns, the
Auburn defense limited the (Georgia
running game to 187 yards, recov
ered three fumbles and Intercepted
two passes
All In all. it was a very frustrating
day for the Dogs
"Total frustration," Lars Tale
said. "They jumped on us quick and
we were Just trying lo stay alive ''
An ominous note was struck early
when Auburn scored on Its second
possession of die game Burger
moved the Tigers effortlessly down
the field In sis plays and capped off
the drive with a 21-yard TD pass to
Lawyer Tillman The two learns
then exchanged field goals in the
second quarter as Auburn took a 10-
3 lead al halftime
Thai was as close as Georgia
would get.
Perhaps the biggest play of the
game came on Auburn's first pos
session of the second half Facing a
thlrd-and-lwo on the Auburn 36,
Burger shocked the Georgia defense
by passing lo tailback Harry Mose
In the right flat By the time the
Bulldogs had recovered, Mose had
raced 55 yards to the Georgia 6
Auburn scored three plays later
as Burger threw his second TD pass
to Duke Donalson Facing a 17-3 def
icit, Georgia quickly self-de
structed. James Jackson tumbled
on the Dogs' next possession and
Auburn converted the turnover into
a quick field goal increasing its lead
to 20-3
“We may have pressed a little bit
too hard," Jackson said "I made a
couple of careless mistakes I
thought we were mentally and phys
ically ready, but when we got be
tween the white lines we just didn't
do It."
Wayne Johnson replaced Jackson
on Georgia's next series but he
didn't fare much better Johnson
promptly threw a screen pass into
the arms of Auburn's Nate Hill and
the Tiger tackle relumed It six
yards lo the Bulldog 28.
"We made some turnovers that
really hurl us,” Tate said "They
had some big plays and look advan
tage of It,"
Auburn ended its scoring parade
on the very next play as receiver Al
exander Wrtghl hobbled and then
controlled a reverse handoff and
dashed 28 yards for a 27-3 lead
Tate scored a late touchdown for
the Dogs and added a two-polnl con
version but It was all for naughl as
Auburn ran away with a big victory
"Our bad play last week moti
vated us this week." Tiger tailback
Stacy Danley said. "We knew the
Suga- Bowl was on the line."
Afterwards In ihe (Jeorgia locker
room, a variety of suggestions were
offered for the Bulldogs poor play.
Yet, no one was sure why
"I don't think we were tight,"
coach Vince Dooley said. "We were
obviously excited about the game
but we just didn't play very well
We were very hodgepodge today
which was because of Auburn. We
just didn't convert or execute."
Thomas added. "Auburn Just cap-
llallted on our mistakes They were
the most aggressive defense we've
faced."
Whatever the reason, a solemn
John Brantley quietly summed up
Ihe evening saying, “It was the
worse loss I've ever experienced."
