Canadian Candy flew from SCTV to ‘Planes’
By Scott Williams
R«S »nd Black Sun Writer
LOS ANGELES — There are big
•tare and there are BIG movie
•tare. John Candy, filmdom’s big-
ge«t funny man, la a surprisingly
quiet fellow who could actually be
called aweet.
Candy, who made his original
mark with the Canadian comedy
group SCTV, has ilowly built a solid
career based on a series of con
tinual box office successes
("Stripes” and "Splash ") and re
ceived critical acclaim even when
he appeared In flops like "Summer
Rental "
A lady representing a Tokyo pub
lication was concerned about the
possibility of Csndy loosing weight
and commented that people In
Japan respect large men.
"I’m very conscious of my weight
for health reasons," Candy said.
"However, at times, when I do
movies, I eat junk food We ate a lot
of microwave popcorn on this film
"I try to eliminate certain
things," Candy continued "More so
than I did In the past My problem,
like a lot of Americans have, is lack
of exercise. My metabolism is such
that if I don’t beat It up every day
for an hour, I won't lose weight I
don't like doing that so..."
Not long ago, Canada and the
United States implemented a new
free trade deal Because of this
deal, some think Canadian
filmmakers and actors will have to
come to the States to be better rec
ognized Candy, a Canadian by
birth, addressed the issue
“I don't think that’s really the
case, "Candysaid
"My decision to come down to the
United States to live was based on
making more money,” he said.
‘It’s how you
perceive things'
— Candy
"More work was generated for me
down here than was in Canada at
any time.
"When we were doing SCTV,"
Candy continued, "the show was
being shot in Toronto and then Ed
monton. So it was a necessity to be
up there But 1 kind of follow where
the work goes Once the market
opens up in Canada and many more
films start happening and many
more films start developing, I don't
think there will be a crossover as
much But remember, Hollywood is
the Mecca. This is where everything
starts. Everything is generated
from here and New York and talent
will seek that."
"In Canada they're playing a lot
of silly games with restrictions and
this and that,” Candy said "1 don't
think they (the restrictions) should
be there It should be more open.
That will help the free trade issue
most of all. It's such a complex
question,"
Being an actor in such huge de
mand, Candy has the opportunity to
read dozens of screenplays and
bandy about numerous offers, but
"Planes, Trains and Automobiles"
sparked Candy on its first reading.
"The script captured me immedi
ately," Candy said. “I was excited
by it. I laughed and cried. It was

just so brilliant. It was if I'd written
it myself.
"I was so excited that 1 couldn't
wait to get started on It," Candy
continued. "I was just going into an
other movie at the time ("Space-
balls"), and all I could think about
was this one.
When I first read It I thought 'fi
nally, Oh my God.' Then I thought
'how'd he (Hughes) know me?'
Candy said he'd met Hughes
briefly a few years before at Uni
versal.
"It was sort of, 'Hi, how do you
do? Pleased to meet you. (Then
mlmlclng their conversation) Like
your work, Like your work.' "
Somewhere the notion developed
that comedians suffer snguish from
their continued ability to remain
funny.
"It s through your eye, how you
see things, how you perceive
things," Candy said. “Some things
strike me funnier, I don't know."
"What is it? I'm not sure," Candy
joked "Dammit, let's find out. I say
we get a grant, get some real
money in this.”
Candy reminisced about his time
spent in Edmonton while doing
SCTV.
"I had a wonderful time in Ed
monton," Candy said. "We were
somewhat isolated up there from
family and everything Everything
was devoted to work. I thought
those were our best shows. "
However, a reunion seems un
likely.
“There were plans for a reunion,”
Candy said, “but I don't think it will
happen Everybody's gone different
ways and there's one major lawsuit.
Comedy scripts are awfully hard
to find, particulary good ones. Since
so many people are developing and
writing their own scripts, it's not
unusual to discover Candy doing the
same
“I've been chatting with Mr,
Hughes and Mr Martin, and I chat
a little bit every now and then,"
Candy said. "I'm still in cahoots
with a lot of the people from SCTV.
There are things in the works,”
Candy's work on SCTV was that
of improvisation. Certain types of
comedy, particularly stand-up,
don't lend themselves to an easy
transition to the screen. Luckily
Candy had no such problems.
"It's an easy transition from an
improvisational background to
film,” Candy said. "My training
from Second City was more geared
as an actors' training school.”
Making a movie isn't all serious
stuff. There was one scene, when
Candy and Martin are in bed to
gether, that took forever to film.
"There was a camera rigged di
rectly above the bed," Candy said.
"They (camera and sound men)
would laugh and we could see the
camera shaking and we got to
laughing and the whole set would
shake.”
Edible art attempts to end hunger
597 E. Broad Arts Center sponsors
By Andrea Naterman
Red and Black Staff Writer
Athens artists who are dedicated
to ending hunger by the year 2000
are sponsoring an Edible Art Show
on Nov. 19.
The idea for the show is derived
from an event which used to be pre
sented by the University's Art De
partment Art students were able to
create unique exhibits made of food
which were then judged in several
categories. The show was disconti
nued three years ago because many
of the masterpieces submitted were
of questionable taste.
“The show is open to everyone
and prizes are being given in many
categories,” Margaret Keister,
Coordinator of the Athens cam
paign, said.
While each entry will have its
unique qualities, Keister said she
expects to see some highly original
decorated cookies and elaborate
holiday food suitable for entertain
ment.
“All of the entries are donated for
sale with the proceeds going to the
Hunger Project," Keister said
The campaign is the work of the
597 E. Broad Center for the Arts
The artists range from preschoolers
to professionals
In addition to the edible art show,
the Center sponsored a talent show
on Nov ll and exhibitions of all art
forms will be on display until Nov.
20.
While the artists emphasize that
the hunger problem needs contin
uous attention, the dates for dis
plays and programs at 597 began on
World Hunger Day, Oct. 16, and will
continue through Thanksgiving.
Awards will be given in several
categories including Most Original,
Most Humorous and Most Elab
orate.
Entries can be brought In at 6 15
p m, on Nov. 19 The displays will
be on exhibit at 7 p.m.
