Bronson uninterested and uninteresting in ‘Death Wish IV’

A review of Death Wish IV: The
Crackdown,” starring Charles
Bronson, John Ryan and Kay Lent
Directed by J, Lee Thompson. A
Cannon Film* release rated R Now
showing at the Classic Triple,
By Scott Williams
Red end math dull Writer
Few will admit the first two
‘‘Death Wish" sequels were any*
. a couple hours
t in which hard-core action fans
could wallow.
They did however, offer certain
vicarious thrills by allowing a
viewer to vent frustration by
watching the nastiest of scum-bag
rapists/muggers receive their Just
desserts. Unfortunately, the makers
of number four In the series made a
grossly heinous mistake
Writer Gall Morgan Hickman,
l*rtpr t rr\ /The Ket! and Black
who wrote the semi enjoyable
Bronson flick "Murphys Law,"
went off the deep end and made the
character of Paul Kersey (Bronson)
a gullible scaredy cat who doesn't
have enough gump'lon to stand up
to blackmail and Is unable to see de
ception when It's plastered under
his nose.
Kersey changes course from
raplsti /muggers to cocaine dealers
when the daughter of the woman
he's dating dies from an overdose
By taking the topical issue of
crack, the story sipped clean over
the central theme of the other three
"Death Wish” pics, that of a tor
tured soul burning for Intimate re
venge against those who Invade and
ruin a man's life.
The broadening of the story does
nothing more than cause a "watch
Charley blow this guy away and
watch Charley do half a dozen other
things" attitude because the close
ness of Kersey's relationship with
the woman and her daughter is nei
ther believable nor really even at
tempted, By not allowing Kersey to
have emotions, the film ends up
with an action flick as lifeless as
Bronson's mustache
Bronson seems so completely
uninterested in his character that
his usually solid stone-ltke face ac
tually seems to sag from the weight
of the ridiculous story and his ho-
hum approach. Bronson proves he
still has the magic In the recent

The Uptown show Nretlose performed Sat. night proved
that D. Boon's death hasn't dampened the spirit ot the
group. Dedicating a song to a member of R.E.M.. the
band drew cheers from audience members more fa
miliar with the local band than with the Minutemen and
its transition into firellose. Before the Cinderella re-
made-for-cable film "Act Of Ven
geance," but anyone seeing him for
the first time would swear he was a
derelict the filmmakers pulled off
some sleazy downtown street
corner
The director, J Lee Thompson,
proved In the past he can acciden
tally make a good film, “The Guns
Of Navarone" and "The Evil That
Men Do,” for example, but most of
the time he rolls out awful low bud-
get/blg star tripe like Chuck Norris’
"Flrewalker" and the Richard
Chamberlain remake, "King Solo
mons Mines ”
Bronson still has three pictures
left to make in his five picture deal
with Cannon. If they request he
make part five, they better give him
a 500 percent superior script or the
film better be called "Death Wish
V: The Hunt For Cannon Exec
utives.”
minder of Athens' blue laws abruptly halted the string
of energy, however, firellose had captivated all. Un
doubtedly. those who weren’t fans before the show will
now head to Wuxtry to snatch up the newest fireHose
LP, to be released at the end of this month.

At his Uptown Lounge performance Friday night. Chilton strumme
out such songs from "High Priest." his latest LP, as "1‘ve Got
Thing For You" and "Take It Off." Although the crowd seemed mor
fired up for the game than for the slightly mellow Chilton, the shoi
didn t suffer from the audience’s lack of enthusiasm.
