4 Aria’ mixes romance, opera
A review of "Aria," starring Buck
Henry, Beverly D'Angelo, Anita
Morris and Brigitte Fonda. Di
rected by Jean-Luc Godard,
Robert Altman, Ken Russell,
Bruce Beresford, Nicholas Roeg,
Bill Bryden, Derek Jarman,
Franc Rodam, Charles Sturridge
and Julien Temple. A Miramax
Films release. Now playing at Le
Font.
By Jim Farmer
Ked and Black Staff Writer
“Aria" is an uneven but fre
quently fascinating amalgam of
opera and pure eroticism.
Directed by 10 different direc
tors, who are given their own seg
ment to produce, “Aria” is an
odyssey quite unlike anything
you’ve ever seen.
Each of the pieces deals with
the theme of opera Opening the
film is a segment by Nicholas
Roeg. Theresa Russell, the direc
tor’s wife, stars as King Zog, the
real-life Albanian leader who was
almost assassinated while at
tending an opera. Unfortunately,
it’s strangely remote and silly and
suffers by the usage of Russell (in
drag) as the king.
But the goings-on get better. Ju
lian Temple, who directed the un-
derseen gem of a musical
“Absolute Beginners,” combines
sexiness with a comic playfulness
in his piece. A woman (Anita
Morris) pretends to be sick, only
to jump into the arms of her lover.
Her husband (Buck Henry) isn’t
too remorseful; supposedly off
shooting a movie, he's in the arms
of a Swedish bombshell (Beverly
D’Angelo).
Three segments are powerfully
erotic. Jean-Luc Godard combines
naked girls and weightlifting studs
in a gym for a sensual vision, and
Bruce Beresford delivers with a
short scene of a couple making
love amidst a plaintive environ
ment.
The most arousing is Franc
Roddam's, detailing the suicide of
a couple after they’ve made love.
Surprisingly, this episode, despite
its soft-core pom, is beautiful and
quite romantic.
Ken Russell, who can never be
accused of being boring or
uninspired, deals trashily but win-
ningly with the surreal dreams of
a car-crash victim.
The worst is Robert Altman’s.
Comprised of an 18th century au
dience interacting before a perfor
mance, it makes little sense and is
hopelessly dull Little also comes
from Charles Sturridge, who deals
unsuccessfully with two children
who steal a car, and Bill Bryden,
whose segment with John Hurt as
an actor is a snoozer.
Compilation films rarely work,
and "Aria’’ certainly isn’t a bona-
fide smash. But the good parts
compensate for the weak, and
where else on Earth could you
possibly see Russell, Godard,
Roeg, et. al., on the same ticket?
