Perfect: Wener gets a 10.0
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Assistant Sports Editor
It ended like a fairy tale.
Georgia senior Lucy Wener,
after years of swinging between
the uneven parallel bars in pursuit
of that elusive dream of perfection,
scored a 10.0 and won her third un
even bar title at the individual ap
paratus championships Saturday
night.
“I went out there and tried to do
the ultimate," Wener said. "I knew
had to concentrate a little harder,
hit every move a little better."
Wener’s perfect score was an
NCAA Championship record, and
only the second 10.0 awarded in
the history of college gymnastics.
Oklahoma gymnast Kelley Gar-
rison-Steves earned a 10.0 on the
balance beam last season before
going on to make the 1988 Olympic
team.
Ironically, Wener’s 10.0 came
four years after her Olympic ca
reer.
Her routine defies description. A
perfect routine can’t be explained.
It has to be seen.
She mounted. The Coliseum
crowd hushed. The hush turned to
a defeaning roar when Wener per
formed her most spectacular
moves. After first catching the high
bar behind her with ht. arms fully
extended, she released the bars
again, did a complete flip, and
caught the bars.
She was home free.
Wener waved to the fans, and
then the 10.0 was posted.
Euphoria.
“I thought I might get it afler I
stuck the landing,” Wener said. “I
was looking at the judges’ faces
and they were all smiling and
looking at each other. It was won
derful to watch them.”
Unfortunately for Wener, she
had to quicky calm her excitement
as she had to move to the balance
beam finals.
Afler making a tremendous save
that brought laughter from both
the fans and herself, she lost her
footing on her dismount and
crashed to the mat, sustaining a
minor neck injury.
Andrea Thomas, who finished
second on the beam at Salt Lake
City last year, finished third this
year. Corrinne Wright tied UCLA’s
Kim Hamilton for a first-place
finish on the floor and tied for third
on the vault. Freshman Chris
Radis took fifth on the vault and
earned All-American status.
