makes the exhibition a big buzaar
where the viewer will find both
good and bad stuff.
Overall, the sculptures score
higher than the paintings Never
theless, some paintings deserve
recognition for their use of colors
and for the emotions they render.
“View over a Secret Harbor,” by
Jim Touchton (oil on canvas), rep
resents a view from a small bal
cony over u peaceful harbor
surrounded bv mountains. The
view is framed by two huge palm
trees in the foreground. The artist
renders the balcony from an un
usual perspective (sort of an over
head view), helping to break the

“Santa Maria Nuova,” by Alan
Campbell (wnterrolor on paper),
represents a small church lost in
the hills The view is dramatic —
thin, tortuous black trees devoid of
foliage accentuate a feeling of iso
lation. Yet, at the same time, the
work is peaceful, because the artist
illuminates the church with the
sun. The use of the wutercolor
gives the entire landscape a
dreamy quality.
“City on a Hill" also presents
wild paintings like “Iphigenia II,”
by Tony Vevers (mixed media on
paper on canvas) Believe it or not,
the painter uses shoe soles nil over
the canvas Although it’s exposed
in a museum, und it’s supposed to
be art, it’s rather difficult to accept
as such
The Official Prayer Rug,” by
Joni Mnbe (lithograph on paper)
doesn’t lack humor. Unfortunately,
the lithograph represents Elvis in
a style already used by Andy
Warhol in his Marilyn Monroe
lithograph.
The sculptures are really the
most innovative and, therefore, in
teresting pieces on display.
“Mother and Child,” by Ira M.
Taylor is the type of sculpture the
viewer will never tire of admiring.
At first glance, and without looking
at the title, the piece is rather in
triguing. Shaped like a big bean,
white and polished, the piece
doesn’t give many clues to its inter
pretation. But once the artist’s in
tention is discovered the sculpture
makes a lot of sense. Two separate
forms can easily be discerned: a
mother’s arm around the her
child’s neck. It’s simple and
graceful. In a word, it works.
In a totally different style, ‘Ten
nessee Cut," by Horace L. Farlowe,
doesn’t intend to represent any
thing, but still works as a beautiful
piece. While “Mother” plays on the
delicateness of the stone, Ten
nessee Cut” plays on its force. The
sculpture is composed of three dis
tinct pieces: two arches forming a
rectangle interruped in the middle
by a horizontal piece. The negative
space is as important as the posi
tive — from any point of view, it’s
an entirely different sculpture
"Bloomingdale Girl," by Joseph
Bowa is a black ceramic rep
resenting the bust of a young
woman. Wearing a high fashion
hair style (of the Groce Jones va
riety) and a cope, she looks at the
viewer with the insolent smile of a
woman who knows she is beautiful.
The artist gives importance to
small details, like a mole on her
breast or her pierced ears. Unfor
tunately, the piece is set against a
wall, and the viewer wonders what
the sculpture looks like from the
back. A sculpture is a three dimen
sion piece and the viewer should
always be allowed to look at it from
any point of view. This is definitely
a bad point for the display.
Despite all these praises, “City
on a Hill” also displays a lot of
uninteresting amateur work. It’s
probably nor worth a lot of time.
