first began practicing
judo at age five and took his first
shot at his Olympic dream in
1987, when he trained under
Olympic Coach Y. Yonezukn at
Union County College in New
Jersey.
“I didn’t make the 1988 team,
but I got a good taste of what I
need to do to make it in 1992,” he
said. “I usually spend two or
three hours a day training, which
isn’t really good enough," he said.
“If I want to make the Olympics,
I should spend five to six hours a
day training."
In order to qualify for the 1912
Games, Kohler must compete in
tournaments on the national and
international levels which will
cost him about $2316 over the
next five months.
Cyclists win SECF and reach nationals
By MICHAEL SCOGIN
Sports Writer
Collegiate cycling combines the
speed of the individual with the
strategy and tactics of the team to
produce one of the most grueling,
exciting and fastest growing sports
around.
Both the Georgia men’s and
women’s teams coasted to the
overall team championship in the
first year of organized competition
in the Southeastern Collegiate Cy
cling Federation. Georgia will send
both its teams to the national
championships to be held in Colo
rado Springs, Colo., May 19 and 20.
“We’ve been working as a team
all year trying to get to nationals,”
said Joan Camck, an Australian
native who won all four races in
the women’s division and is looking
forward to national competition.
“I’m expecting it to be really
tough."
Collegiate cycling is a road
racing event composed of laps of
anywhere from 20 to 60 miles over
hilly terrain. Speed sprints within
a lap establish individual and team
position. Men’s races are composed
of A and B races with the A races
being of longer distance for the
more experienced riders Team
work is just ns important as indi
vidual speed.
“Collegiate cycling is just as
much of a tactical sport ns it i< a
speed sport,” said Dennis Prick tt,
one of the eight cyclists who will go
to nationals.
Georgia used all the strategy
and tactics of cycling to their best
advantage last weekend in Gaines
villa, Fla. to propel teammate Van
McConnon to a victory over a tough
Florida team in the men’s A race.
Prickett, who finished third,
Steve Faber, fourth, and Paul Bro
niec, sixth, used alternating at
tacks to wear down Florida riders
while McConnon rested in slips
treams until the final leg of the
race when he was able to outspnnt
a ragged Florida rider to take the
victory.
Joan Camck won the women’s
race in Florida while Betsy
Macklin finished third, Heidi
Schwertfeger fourth and Valoree
Johnson fifth.
McConnon, Prickett, Broniec,
Faber and another rider will rep
resent the Georgiu men in na
tionals while Camck, Macklin,
and Schwertfeger will ride for the
women.
Competition in nationals will lie
extremely tough Georgia riders
will \te up against teams from the
West and the Northeast who domi
nate the sport. Many of these
riders receive direct funding from
their universities as well as schol
arships and corporate sponsorship
for equipment. The University of
Georgia does not allow sponsorship
and the riders are considered a
club sport and recieve funds only
from the Recreational Sports De
partment.
