After releasing its second album
last spring and touring in Europe,
frantic rock V roll group from
n>ton Rouge, La., is back in the
otates.
r li^n men band, comprised
>' bill Davis, lead singer and gui-
t«nst, Ned “Hoaky* Hickel, bass,
and Chris Luckette, drums, will
' r ng their wild and crazy live per-
'rmance ti> Athens this weekend.
In a phone interview, lead singer
1 1 Davis talked about the band’s
tour and its latest record.
& Black: You just returned
ftom a two-month tour of Europe.
l)id you enjoy it?
Bill Davis: We only played in
Northern Europe. They have these
big summer festivals. Like, we
played in these out-door festivals
with Cheap Trick and Meat Loaf ...
laughter). It was a lot of fun, but
ill they (the audiences) seem to do
is get drunk; all they do is drink
until they pass out. So, it wasn’t
like they were really getting a lot
>ut of our music. It was just like a
big, wild party.
R&B: Do you like being hack in
Athens?
INTERVIEW
B.D.: Athens has been the most
constantly supportive place for us
to play. Our two favorite places to
play are Austin, Texas, and
Athens. It just seems like in
Athens the people really dance a
lot, go crazy ana jump up on stage
with us. And that’s what we think
a rock ’n’ roll show should be, when
everybody is getting into it and
going crazy It always happens in
Athens; it’s always wild.
R&B: What about your new
album 'Ace of Clubs’?
B.D.: We recorded it almost two
years ago, but it was tied up for so
long with the old record company,
688, that it was just released So
the songs are kind of old to us, but
to a lot of people they are new. I
think the album is really recorded
Dash Rip Rock: Just having a good time
well, and I think we gave some of
our best performances on it.
R&B Why did you choose the
name "Ace of Clubs?"
B.D.: One of our reputations is
as a good live band, and what we
do, since 1985, is that we’re touring
all over the country playing in
clubs, bar rooms and all over the
place. So, we just got a reputation
of being a club band, and that’s
why we call it “Ace of Clubs "
R&B: You sing in the title rut,
"Johnny Ace," about “a rock V roll
Jesus with a cowboy mouth."
Would you classify yourself as one?
B.D.: (Laughter) Well, a lot of
musicians think of themselves as
being like rock ’n’ roll preachers,
like they’d be spreading the gospel
of rock ’n’ roll. I don’t ever put my
self on a pedestal in that way. But
what we try to do is that instead of
preach like Jesus would have, we
just like to have fun, and we want
our audience to have a real good
time We’re not really like rock ’n’
roll Jesuses. We’re more like the
rock ’n’ roll disciples . Daughter).
R&B: Do you hare any plans for
another album with Mammoth Re
cords?
B.D.: What we’re doing now is
that we’re, like, rushing into the
studio to do a new record because
we’ve new songs we want to record.
R&B: Anyidea when it will be re
leased?
B.D.: I think we’re going to re
cord it in October and it should be
released, hopefully, by February.
We’re going to record it in Mem
phis, Tennessee The birthplace of
Elvis ... (laughter)
R&B What about the opening
band for your Friday show, "Hands
of Glory"?
B.D.: They're a real good band
from Austin They used to be called
“Ballad Shambles," and they play
kind of like psychedelic rock ’n’ roll.
They’re fnends of ours
Dash Rip Rock will be per
forming at the Uptown ljounge
Friday night.
WASTE
From page 1
Graver said no toxic waste is
leaking into the ground, and the
plant has never been a danger to
the neighboring communities.
Graver, who is featured in the
documentary, said he had no plans
to see the film.
One of the reactors at the plant
was closed in August 1988 because
of unspecified problems Graver
didn’t wish to explain. He said he
expects the Secretary of Energy to
give his approval for the restart of
the reactor sometime this summer.
The Athens Peace Coaltion said
that a Department of Energy offi
cial has stated that the list of
safety improvements for the re
actor couldn’t be completed before
mbir 1989.
Mori said the reactors at the
SRP, which were built 35 years ago
as a part of the Manhatten Project,
were built to last only 10 years.
The reactor has no containment
dome to keep radiation from
spewing into the environment if an
explosion occurred at the plant,
Mori said.
“Any explosion at the Savannah
River Plant would be similar to the
explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear
plant in the Soviet Union,” he said.
The Athens presentation of
“Building Bombs” is the start of a
seven-city, four-state tour for the
movie.
Mori said he hopes the docu
mentary will make people aware of
what is happening at the plant and
lead to the permanent shutdown
and clenn-up of the plant.
“It’s a moral question,” Mori
said. “Why do we keeping making
this when we already nave enough
nuclear warheads to destroy the
Soviet Union many times over?”
R.E.M. has been a financial sup
porter of the documentary, Mori
said. They have also promoted the
film at their concerts. He said be-

tween Dec 1988 and Feb. 1989.
The music ranges from experi
mental jazz to atonal to thrash to
tribal chant. My favorite was
“Pizza Party," by Alva Rogers,
which features a man continually
chanting Were gonna have a
pizza party, with minimal mu
sical accompaniment, while a
femal continually rants and
raves at him.
There’s just so much different
stufThere that it would be almost
impossible to find any one person
who loved all of it. On the other
hand, anyone with any interest
at all in experimental music is
sure to find at least one song to
like.
It’s definitely worth checking
out, if only out of curiosity.
But don’t spend your last $10
on it. There’s nothing spectacular
enough to merit starvation.
